Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Weird editing is distracting
Revisado: 04-03-24
Enjoying the story, love the narrator, very annoyed by the bad editing, some words clipped, and a weird fade out on some sentences which sounds like I’m about to get a phone call (iPhone fades audio in a similar way for calls). I’m getting used to it, but I’ve never even noticed audio editing before and on this book it really distracted and annoyed me for the first few days I listened. If you’re sensitive to quirks like this, listen to a sample first.

Excellent
Revisado: 11-01-23
I am struck by the number of reviews bemoaning King’s politics and the way contemporary issues come up in this book. It’s about a lot of things, but it wrestled with tribalism and politics and how they keep us from seeing one another. Right and left is not good vs. evil. Evil is amoral, apolitical, and depraved, and probably thrives best in politically chaotic environments where someone like a college professor can easily play the character of a ‘good’ person. If you feel called out by this book, you missed the point.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Great listening experience
Revisado: 09-09-23
The description of this book, so vague and opaque, put me off for a while. I loved Clarke’s earlier work, so knew I should read this, but I wasn’t enthusiastic. I’m so glad I finally committed. Unique, fun, a slow-burn, fascinating.

Interesting premise, enjoyed overall
Revisado: 09-05-23
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and both times I largely enjoyed it, but both times felt like something was missing, and I think it’s character depth and plot development. The book is intelligent, has a compelling premise, plays with original ideas, and feels like it could almost be great. I don’t like to write bad reviews, usually just ignoring and moving on, and the book is not bad at all, but it’s like you can taste how good it could have been if the central protagonist was a little more complex, if the plot twisted the knife a little more. As someone who is always looking for my next great fantasy and being disappointed as often as not, I’m still glad I listened and would still recommend. Performance by Simon Vance was, as always, excellent.

Thank you Sinead
Revisado: 08-01-23
I have always liked Sinead O’Connor and admired her honesty and vulnerability in the face of a cruel and uncaring world. Some people just feel harder, see injustice and dysfunction more clearly, and suffer for it. I had always meant to read this memoir, and was moved to this week, wishing I had long before. I’m glad I listened. Her voice is sad and beautiful, and the writing is clever, easy to listen to, and really shows how her connection to music worked (I’m not musical, so I appreciated that).
Thank you for a beautiful book, Sinead, rest peacefully!

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Great listen, overhyped but still excellent book
Revisado: 11-20-22
I read a lot of hype about this book and I can see why some people were disappointed, some elements seemed rushed or didn’t exactly make sense. It could have been twice as long, which is not something I usually say about books. That said, writing was on point, the concept was original, and I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. The ending was beautiful, and really landed. Don’t go into it with expectations, just have an open mind and enjoy a wonderful, well written book. The narrator did a great job too, and did distinctive characters without silly voices, and hit the emotional tone just right.

Historia
In 2018, Koko died at age 46. The news made headlines around the world. What would become of interspecies communication now that its number one ambassador had crossed the rainbow bridge? When Koko died, ape language studies were long since in the rearview mirror. Penny’s work with Koko was scientifically passé. No one much cared anymore. So what then did The Gorilla Foundation have to show for its four decades of work with Koko? What about the woman who devoted her life to this animal? And how do we as a culture make amends with what Koko became?

Interesting listening
Revisado: 09-21-22
I liked this quick, compelling podcast about ape studies and Koko the gorilla, a quirky mainstay of animal news in the 90s. I thought the host was talented and thorough, but didn’t like all the personal asides and jokes that made the show ‘feel’ more like entertainment than education. I like jokes and I like good journalism, but I don’t really like them to be mixed up and I guess I prefer when this kind of show is more journalistic. Totally my preference, so I wouldn’t discourage anyone from listening. I would try out another Lauren Ober show, and I’m glad I listened.

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Incredible
Revisado: 07-16-22
People have told me I should read this book for years. I’m already skeptical of religion and didn’t think I needed a drawn-out story about how the dysfunction of the Lds church led to the murder of a young woman. I was still amazed by the story woven here, the story of a religion, fundamentalism, America, and one family. I had very high expectations and I was still impressed. This is a book every American should read.

Historia
The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared, where a child-king sits unprotected on the throne, where religion vies with magic for the souls of the people. It is to this desperate land that Arthur returns, a man at once utterly human and truly heroic: a man of honor, loyalty, and amazing valor; a man who loves Guinevere more passionately than he should; a man whose life is at once tragic and triumphant.
