The Deep by River Solomon offers a profound exploration of trauma and collective memory through a speculative lens. The novel imagines a submerged society, the Water People, descendants of enslaved Africans who were cast overboard during the transatlantic slave trade. Yetu, the story’s protagonist, is the historian responsible for holding and reliving the traumatic memories of her ancestors.

From a therapeutic perspective, Solomon’s portrayal of Yetu’s burden highlights the complex dynamics of carrying historical trauma. The novel provides an insightful metaphor for the emotional toll that trauma can impose on individuals who bear the weight of collective suffering. Yetu’s struggle to balance her role with her own mental well-being mirrors the challenges faced by those in real-life trauma recovery, emphasizing the need for boundaries and self-care.

The book's exploration of memory, identity, and healing offers a rich resource for understanding how trauma can be transmitted and how individuals might find pathways to resilience. Solomon’s lyrical prose and innovative narrative structure invite readers to reflect deeply on the impact of trauma and the potential for healing within both personal and communal contexts.

Sam Harris’s "Lying" offers a profound examination of the ethics and impacts of dishonesty. Harris argues that lying, even with good intentions, undermines trust and self-integrity, which aligns with therapeutic goals of fostering authenticity and transparency in client relationships. For therapists, this book underscores the importance of honesty in building effective therapeutic alliances and addressing underlying issues. However, therapists must also consider that there are nuanced situations where complete honesty might need to be balanced with sensitivity and empathy, especially in complex or traumatic contexts. Overall, "Lying" reinforces key therapeutic principles while prompting reflection on how to apply these principles in diverse real-world scenarios.

I feel like they’re only 2 times you write reviews when you really hated and when you absolutely love it! this is one of those times and I absolutely loved it! My goodness I don’t know if it was the fact of Viola Davis narrates herself or the way in which she painted the pictures so you almost saw a movie (probably both) I finished inspired to live I know this sounds familiar but I guess more specifically to make every day count to know that there’s a reason for every adversity! we all have a story.
