A few good principles, some taken too far
Revisado: 05-24-24
I wish I could say I could recommend this book. I totally agreed with its message at the beginning that Christians need to get better at handling money, not be ashamed of making it, but it seemed to undermine its own message.
The book does have some good basic principles - like the importance of sowing financially into God’s kingdom and putting Him first, yet that will look a bit different for everyone.
It’s not only hard to ignore that the female author of this book described herself as working for very very little money for an entire year as her gateway to being blessed by God, which is dangerous advice to give - especially for women, who already tend to undervalue their work - but also that the book repeatedly describes “upward giving” as giving to a MAN of God, when there are plenty of women in ministry who would benefit from financial assistance in their ministries.
Overall, the few good principles in this book don’t, in my opinion, make up for the teaching that does not seem beneficial to me and some of it can be downright harmful, especially if taken too far.

Every bit as good as I remembered

This was a childhood favorite of mine. It’s a pleasure to hear it as an audiobook. The characters are so lovable, and the way the kids played was pretty realistically written, which makes it very nostalgic indeed.

In this updated version of the classic of popular Egyptology, Barbara Mertz combines her doctorate in Egyptology at the famed Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago with a life-long enthusiasm for ancient Egypt. Her love of the subject is contagious and makes her the perfect guide to ancient Egypt for the student, the layman, and those who plan to visit or have visited the Nile Valley.

Entertaining and educational
Revisado: 03-15-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The author took what could be a very dry subject, a long history of an ancient people, and made it truly come alive with humor, “gossip”, and fun insights into the world of Egyptologists. It truly shows historians, as well as the ancients, as just as human as the rest of us.
The narrator is a joy to listen to as well.

Historia
Althea Tomlinson comes back to Egypt as just another tourist, showing the country to a spoiled 17-year-old girl. That's what she tells herself, anyway. Really, though, what drives her is a desire to discover the truth behind her father's disgrace and subsequent death.

Fun mystery, terrible sexism
Revisado: 02-27-24
Spoilers ahead.
The protagonist has a few good moments and the mystery is fun, but I was shocked at just how much internalized misogyny, a term I rarely use since it’s often overused, she has. The book starts out with her complaining about how irritating she finds teenage girls, and over the course of the book she is repeatedly condescended to, insulted, and even assaulted. A man also kisses her despite her continually stepping away and rather than stand up for herself and tell him it was wrong to force a kiss on her, she just accepts and even enjoys that kind of treatment.
The worst part is that she falls for a man who actively insults, berates, and treats her like a child, but worst of all he is a man who tried to choke her out of anger, and she constantly blames herself for his abusive actions.
Though the rest of the story is pretty well written, this is not something that I can overlook. I’m sure this book was written with good intentions, and it even makes a good point about how poorly the men of the Middle East often treat women, but it is a true shame that the abusive behavior of the American men was merely glossed over.

The first rule of being a ghost whisperer: Don't tell anyone. Seriously. Don't. Sure, it might sound harmless. A fun party trick, even. I assure you, it's not. How do I know? Well, let's just say that I've had a lot of experience with this sort of thing, and nine times out of 10, it turns into an all-consuming disaster.

Thoroughly enjoyed
Revisado: 11-14-23
While this story might have a lot of “fluff”, it isn’t lacking in substance. Sometimes a story where the characters are so genuinely likable and care about each other is just as important as a thoughtful mystery, and this has both. While the mystery isn’t the deepest one out there, it’s certainly made a lot more fun with the involvement of ghosts and wondering where the protagonist’s power comes from.
As someone who is often not a fan of romance elements for their cheesiness, I found this one a lot of fun for the love interest’s humor and strength along with the protagonist’s equal strength and thought they meshed well together.
Overall, the narration was very enjoyable and the story was fantastic, especially if you want a nice, cozy mystery without overly harsh elements. A great book to relax to without having your intelligence insulted.

Historia
As if a run-in with an old flame and a failed marriage proposal weren't enough to horrify Krissy for one night, a woman is found strangled to death in a room filled with ominous jack-o'-lanterns. All signs suggest a crime of passion - but when the hostess's jewelry disappears, malevolent intentions seem way more likely.

Has potential, but this one falls flat.
Revisado: 11-05-23
The story starts with promise as a cozy mystery, but drags on for far too long with unlikable characters. It seemed as if the author couldn’t quite decide what age to make this story appeal to, as the protagonist Kristy acts as though she’s an insecure teenager at some times and a confident mature thirty at others, which makes the tone quite confusing and the character annoying. The mystery itself simply overstayed it’s welcome to me with too many red herrings.
I think this author shows potential in this novel to write good stories. I think he needs to decide on an audience and definitely learn how to write good female protagonists as this one relies far too much on gaining male attention and approval. I could see a future in which this author writes great, cozy mysteries once these issues are solved.
