A.I. isn't it.
Revisado: 09-15-24
The story wasn't the best, but the A.I. definitely killed any vibe the book did have. It stumbled over words, had thoughtless intonations that didn't match the scene, and had me cringing during anything intimate.
Hire a human narrator please. They work hard and breathe life into a book, even 2012 wattpad lvl ones such as this.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Good Read
Revisado: 09-10-24
I enjoyed this book, would recommend it to anyone who enjoys parodies and watched the OG Star Trek.
Discussing some of what I saw on other reviews-
This author does use the word 'said' a lot, but once you start remembering it's a parody book, and everything is a joke - until it isn't- I would say it didn't bother me too much. I would also say it helps some pacing, especially towards the end when it is used more pointedly. There is also the point I've seen that this may be, in the physical copy, printed more as a screenplay so 'said' is put in place of "DUVAL: Line." for Audio book.
The Codas- I personally enjoyed them, but all three have a more serious tone than the main book. I think you gain something from reading them, but you don't lose anything by skipping should you not be up for it.
The narration does feel a bit dry in places, and there isn't much tonal difference in characters. It is a bit difficult in the beginning to work out, especially Duval vs Dahl.
I read this over the course of a cleaning day and enjoyed it. Especially the parts where the characters talk about what a crap show they're on and you remember who exactly is narrating the book.
4/5: Not perfect. Would read again.

An Excellent Piece of "Murphy's Law" Writing.
Revisado: 06-21-24
Wonderful world building. Character pushed plots. Characters are personable and emotional. Everything that could go wrong, did. Injuries are actually injuries and cost the characters. Thrilled there was a cliffhanger and this is a trilogy! Off to read "Can't Spell Treason Without Tea" because this author has hooked me!

"That's not my sister." Overwhelmed by shock and relief, those are the only words Deven can muster when she is called to identify the body of a suicide victim. A body she was informed was her sister, Kennedy. But as she stares at the lifeless stranger, she's filled with questions: Who is this woman? Why was Deven listed as family? And most important, where is Kennedy? Her intuition tells her just one thing: this can't be a total coincidence.

I'm a bit of a slow burn lover, but this one is a little more fast paced than what I usually read. Cute holiday story. Open door romance.

Her life is in New York, with her photography career finally gaining steam and her bed never empty. Sure, it’s a different woman every night, but that’s just fine with her.

Very well written.
Many plots, but written so well that they add to chaos, not confusion.
Romance isn't the only thing happening and all the characters are well defined with flaws and motivations.

A Warning
Revisado: 05-23-20
When they say 'dated' they don't mean slang that will mark the time period, or the lack of cellphones in the character's reach. They mean that it is a bit sexist and the only insult any of the characters can seem to come up with is 'q*eer', 'feminine', etc.
However, this is still a Stephen King book, and he didn't become famous for his use of slurs. The book is creepy, and sets you on edge, even if you're in full sunlight and working when you listen to this. It has moments that horrify, just as it has those that will make you sad. It also shows people pulling together to face a threat that can go through walls and take over a town in less than a month.
As long as you can get through the first 1/3-1/2 of the book, the slurs and talk of everyone's breasts drops way down when people start dying. Even though this book does have such stuff in it, it is set (and I assume written) in the mid 1970s. "Dated" as it is, I can still see why people rate it among his top books. He takes vampires, something that has, especially in recent years, grown tired, and makes it new, giving you fresh chills about what lays in the dark.
If you are a Stephen King fan, I suggest trying it out. Even Stephen King says it is still one of his favorites.

Revisado: 05-16-20
While the woman's voice was soothing, the noises were not. At first they sounded like, perhaps a car horn a couple streets over? And then they became higher and never ceased. I got about halfway through before it began to give me a piercing headache.
This will not be for me. . .but then again neither was The Office sleep audio and people enjoyed that too. I'd say nothing wrong with giving it a try, it is free after all, but be prepared to turn it off.

Awesome!
Revisado: 05-13-20
This was a very good book.
I've listened to this narrator(Bahni Turpin) before and I LOVE her. She has so many different voices that you'll swear she isn't the only narrator.
The story was good, a bit crude at time, but that is part of the humor, which, as this book is certainly a comedy, is to be expected.
It starts with Andrea Vernon finishing up a resume to a place that asks if she would be okay never asking any questions. Andrea agrees. She has a habit of taking a job here in the States and saving up enough money until she can pay for a trip to Europe, and quitting the job in the States. Then when she runs out of her work visa there, she comes back Stateside and starts the process over again. So she agrees. And immediately a man lazers through her wall.
It turns out to be a job as an assistant manager to Ms. Persephone O, helping her run her company of superheros, getting emails drafted, coffee made, and figuring out just what she needs to do, as she can't ask questions. There's a tiger man, a giant man with a big axe, a woman who can set herself on fire, and guy who can turn into lightning, but who really just wants to go to his hardwear store.
Definitely worth the read. I'm on to the second book.
