Historia
Convinced that the tomb of the little-known King Tutankhamen lies somewhere in the Valley of the Kings, eminent Egyptologist Radcliffe Emerson and his intrepid wife, Amelia Peabody, seem to have hit a wall. Having been banned forever from the East Valley, Emerson, against Amelia's advice, has tried desperately to persuade Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter to relinquish their digging rights.

Second Time Around
Revisado: 01-09-24
I read this series of books in hard back years ago when they were first published. Current political events and the difficulties concomitant with aging required some dependable escapism. Elizabeth Peters provides the perfect recipe for me to escape the anxieties of modern life and the trials of aging.

Historia
What is art? Why do we value images of saints, kings, goddesses, battles, landscapes or cities from eras of history utterly remote from ourselves? This history of art shows how painters, sculptors and architects have expressed the belief systems of their age: religious, political and aesthetic. From the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greece, to the revolutionary years of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the artist has acted as a mirror to the ideals and conflicts of the human mind.

Filled with wrong information
Revisado: 12-30-23
My parents met in art school and I have been studying art history my whole life, I wanted a refresher course. This book is filled with incorrect or limited information. First it told me that the Laocoon sculpture was of three men, It was Laocoon and his sons!!! I made a special trip to Rome to see this wonderful sculpture.
Then it said that Leonardo da Vinci created light and dark in painting (Chiaroscuro) without saying it was perfected by Caravaggio. The book is not inclusive or informative enough.

History come to life
Revisado: 05-21-16
What did you love best about Lamentation?
C.J. Sansom is fabulous for history lovers, he has stellar credentials to write about history and the law and his writing is articulate and a pleasure to read (or for listening). His character of Shardlake is unique and viewing history and law through him keeps me very engaged with the story.
What did you like best about this story?
I have read all the C.J. Sansom books and find them all equally enjoyable and eagerly await his next book. Like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle it is the hero, or anti hero or unconventional hero that makes the story really engaging. Both authors also give me a view into another century so I am almost a time traveler.
What about Steven Crossley’s performance did you like?
For the most part, your readers are excellent. They make the story come alive.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No way, but always looked forward to coming back to the next time I had to listen.
As I have said many times in these ratings, we do many long distance car travels and
listening to audible makes the time go by with speed and entertainment. Sometimes we
miss an off ramp if we are to engaged with the story!

Meet Edgar and Allan Poe - 12-year-old identical twins, the great-great-great-great-grandnephews of Edgar Allan Poe. They look and act so much alike that they're almost one mischievous, prank-playing boy in two bodies. When their beloved black cat, Roderick Usher, is kidnapped and transported to the Midwest, Edgar and Allan convince their guardians that it's time for a road trip.

Poe Fans are in for a Treat
Revisado: 05-21-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Tell-Tale Start to be better than the print version?
Not sure as listening is always fun but as I would rate this a good book for adolescent readers then for them, reading a book might be best.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Tell-Tale Start?
Love in injection of the real Poe into the plot and the ways he tried to communicate with the twins.
Which character – as performed by Arte Johnson – was your favorite?
I liked them all, Arte Johnson did a fine job of telling a tale!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I could have and for long car rides it is perfect as the plot is not so complex that it distracts us from driving but is entertaining enough to make the long hours of driving much more enjoyable

An absolute delight of a debut novel by William Kuhn - author of Reading Jackie: Her Autobiography in Books - Mrs Queen Takes the Train wittily imagines the kerfuffle that transpires when a bored Queen Elizabeth strolls out of the palace in search of a little fun, leaving behind a desperate team of courtiers who must find the missing Windsor before a national scandal erupts.

Delightful Read
Revisado: 05-21-16
What made the experience of listening to Mrs Queen Takes the Train the most enjoyable?
The fun of a life gone astray. The book was out of the ordinary and the characters well represented and though not terribly believable the fantasy of the adventure was delightful.
What other book might you compare Mrs Queen Takes the Train to and why?
The Rosie books, unpredictable plot, when you read lots you get so you can tell what is coming, A Man Called OVE, for the uniqueness of his character and the unconventional way he found friends, The Little French Bookshop, again because the story was unconventional and entertaining. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night because it is a view into other ways of thinking and diverse ways of being, the same goes for Motherless Brooklyn. Getting into a mind that thinks differently than I do is always a treat. All these books portrayed unconventional lives and unpredictable happenings, they were not formulaic and they were fun.
What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?
It was an excellent performance and each character voice was distinct and gave life to the stories in a way that reading the book would not have made possible.
If you could rename Mrs Queen Takes the Train, what would you call it?
That's hard! The title is fine. Maybe something about the difficulties of being queen.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-21-16
What disappointed you about The Case of the Murdered Muckraker?
I don't believe this was written by the same author as the other books, lacks continuity in plot and delivery
What was most disappointing about Carola Dunn’s story?
That it was not up to her other books, Nancy Drew? Multiple writers?
What didn’t you like about Lucy Rayner’s performance?
Accents were terrible, delivery weak.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
None, I have read many other Dunn books but will not order another.

Asian American private investigator Lydia Chin knows New York City's Chinatown, its people, and its ways as no outsider ever could. It's a city within a city, a rich melange of smells, sounds, dark shops, and close-knit families - a world all its own. And in all of Chinatown, there is no one like Lydia, who has a nose for trouble, a disapproving Chinese mother, and a partner named Bill Smith who's been living above a bar for 16 years. Hired to find some precious stolen porcelain, Lydia follows a trail of clues from highbrow art dealers into a world of Chinese gangs.

Fun Read
Revisado: 05-21-16
Where does China Trade rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Somewhere in the top third. I will read another by this author, it is not brilliant but dependably entertaining which is what I am looking for with Audible.
What did you like best about this story?
A view into another world, the inclusion of Chinese art and the characters were interesting.
Which character – as performed by Christine Marshall – was your favorite?
All the characters were performed well. Kirsten Potter is my favorite reader, she deserves another star for her performances. Christine Marshall is very good.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I find it hard to sit still that long except on long car rides where Audible is a MUST!

Not sure but she was very good and will check her out in future
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I am recovering from hip replacement so needed something entertaining, my daughter in

It's 1883. Thaniel Steepleton returns home to his tiny London apartment to find a gold pocket watch on his pillow. Six months later the mysterious timepiece saves his life, drawing him away from a blast that destroys Scotland Yard. Wildly Creative and well written
Revisado: 11-02-15
What made the experience of listening to The Watchmaker of Filigree Street the most enjoyable?
It's creative story telling and imaginative and inventive sense of time and space and mix
of cultures. The addition of Gilbert and Sullivan into the plot, as I am a big fan of G&S.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
My criticism is not of the ending but of the authors view of women. I don't think
he trusts women to be straight forward and compassionate. I was a bit disappointed
in his treatment of the female character.
Which scene was your favorite?
Many scenes were colorful and magical. It is hard to pick one scene, but the development
of plot was engaging
If you could rename The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, what would you call it?
I like the name
