In late 1923, the newly married Daisy Dalrymple and her husband, Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard, come to America for a honeymoon visit. In the midst of a pleasure trip, however, both work in a bit of business - Alec travels to Washington, DC, to consult with the US government, Daisy to New York to meet with her American magazine editor.

While in New York, Daisy stays at the famed Hotel Chelsea, which is not only close to the Flatiron Building offices of Abroad magazine, where she'll be meeting with her editor, but home to many of New York's artists and writers.

After her late-morning meeting, Daisy agrees to accompany her editor, Mr. Thorwald, to lunch. But as they are leaving the offices, they hear a gunshot and see a man plummeting down an elevator shaft. The man killed was one of her fellow residents at the Hotel Chelsea, Otis Carmody, who was a journalist with no end of enemies - personal and professional - who would delight in his death. Again in the midst of a murder investigation, Daisy's search for the killer takes her to all levels of society - and even on a mad dash across the country - as she attempts to solve a puzzle that would baffle even Philo Vance himself.

Decent easy story. The narrator chose a melodramatic style for several characters that made the stereotyping even more obvious and the story less enjoyable. The narrator does a good job of differentiating the characters' voices.

Not the best in the series, but ok

The Case of the Murdered Muckraker is Daisy's "first" case. She's already on the case before before Alec gets there. Once he gets there they go on a cross country hunt on a hunch from Daisy. I love it!

Better than the last

This is another good Daisy Dalrymple story but I find I do not like this narrator at all. She has narrated several of these books and I only listen to the end because of the story.

I have read all the books in order from the first. I love the English settings. This is set in America. Although I hold an affinity for Oregon being a part time resident near Eugene, I was disappointed with the lack of description and the portrayal of the town and people in America itself. The American characters were all in some way shape or form inept, ignorant, shallow or evil. With the exception of one character introduced at the end. If felt thrown together and the voices of the Americans from all over the country or world were unbelievable. The audio made it worse I think in this case.
You never got to know any of the characters well enough and the culprit clear from the start no mystery here. Lady Daisy has changed. Getting married has dampened her gusto a bit and some of the comments from her detective husband are a put down to her character which she shrugs off. If we wanna make this character, strong and independent and capable she needs to show and up for herself with her own husband. Not go out and fight segregation and other things without standing on her own principles at home.
I’ll go to the next one and chalk this one up to just not being what I thought it would. I’ve loved the previous and I can’t live them all so just know you may not like them all going along. To each their own

Someone complained this reader was too slow. I just used the speed setting at 110 percent and the narration was very good

It's an entertaining story and once again Daisy gets her villian. This time she and Akex are in America.

I did wonder about the pronunciation of one of the barnstormers they meet. If his name is spelled Hiram, then the pronunciation should be Hi-ram, not He-ram. Otherwise, it was entertaining wish a mad chase for the culprit.

lots of opportunity for the plot, but had to slog through dialog to keep interested.

Good but not great

This is a perfectly adequate light story with familiar and pleasant characters, but the performance is very poor. Irritating mispronunciations about — who oversees these productions? Worse, the reader’s voice is high, monotonous, and grating. The American characters all sound like parodies of stock figures, mostly mobsters or country hicks. It’s not the author’s fault, or not entirely, but one cannot become involved in a story full of such dreadful stereotyped voices.

Cosy mystery very poorly read

I was distracted from the story line numerous times by the annoying voices she used. All the men sounded like they had a bad head cold.

The narrator ruins it for me

I have really enjoyed the Daisy Dalrymple series until now. The over-the-top exaggerated American accent was really annoying. Admittedly, some of the problem was the corny slang of the time, but overall, this wasn’t my favorite of the series.
