Boring AF - Avoid
Revisado: 10-22-23
I’m a big fan of The Firm and enjoy Grisham in general, even many of the very formulaic stories, so I was really looking forward to The Exchange.
Not only was this an extremely boring book, the characters were so bland that I couldn’t have cared less if any of them died.
There was also no real need to have written this with Mitch & Abby. There were just a couple small throwbacks to The Firm, and neither were essential or added anything meaningful to the story that couldn’t have been substituted by a different person or place.
Performance was okay I guess

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Excellent
Revisado: 06-28-18
It has, at times, almost been romantic in some of its views, and, if certain sections had ended early, certainly would have presented a romantic view. Just as a position starts to look great, all the counter views are laid bare.
Sometimes it was a bit reductionist, but it covered the entire sweep of human history, from natural selection happenstance to today with speculations of future possibilities. It was viewed through the lens of the cognitive revolution, agricultural revolution, and industrial revolution (with the pros and cons of each laid bare). Because of such a large scope, I gave a pass to some of the reductions as most of them didn’t change the overall narrative.
Ultimately, this book raised way, way more questions than it answered for all aspects of humanity, and for that, I found it both fascinating and refreshing.

Historia
Ever since Martin Banks and his fellow computer geeks discovered that reality is just a computer program to be happily hacked, they've been jaunting back and forth through time, posing as medieval wizards and having the epic adventures that other nerds can only dream of having. But even in their wildest fantasies, they never expected to end up at the mercy of the former apprentice whom they sent to prison for gross misuse of magic and all-around evil behavior.

Better Written than the First Two
Revisado: 08-14-17
The plot still has some holes, the dialogue is still a little stiff, and the characters are still a little shallow, but it's much better writing than the first two books in the series. The story is fun, but there are a few instances of lazy writing, e.g. where the dialogue is identically copied from one scene to another.
Fun enough to buy though.

Revisado: 08-12-17
The writing is still a bit sketchy, with shallow characters and stiff dialogue, but the writing is slowly maturing and getting better (definitely better than the first book).

Revisado: 08-10-17
This story is fun, but the writing really would have benefited from a good editor: it's often a bit rough, and there are some inconsistencies that aren't very well explained.

Intelligent and entertaining
Revisado: 08-04-17
This story manages to walk a balance between being thoughtful (perhaps a little ostentatious at points), but still engaging without being convoluted or overwhelming like a few epic fantasy and sci if stories I can think of. I look forward to the second half.

Historia
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

But Colonel Joe Bishop warns that they might not like what they find, and they can't do anything about it without endangering Earth.

Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

Meh
Revisado: 05-26-17
The story was entertaining overall, but was pretty poorly written. Much of the dialogue is a repeat from the first book. The monkey jokes get very old very quickly. You think they may stop, but they keep on going. Perhaps I just don't understand the joke, but the repetition in the banter between Bishop & Skippy gets pretty irritating.

I definitely appreciate the story's continued emphasis upon violence against women and against the disabled, but the character development & plot are not near the same quality of the original books.
