The author is an incredible storyteller! No dry or boring descriptions here. I teach neuroanatomy, and I learned something, about anatomy or the human condition, from every case presented. This is an amazing book!

This is my least favorite of Kent Haruf’s books. It’s too dark. Nevertheless, I couldn’t stop listening until the end. Good writing is a pleasure to listen to.

The experiences related by the author about communicating with his dead wife just are not believable.

When characters in books do things that are incredibly stupid, and thereby put themselves in peril, I’m done with it. What a shame for this story, because much of the background material is good.

OMG! Just shoot me now! Alternatively, I’ll go live as a hermit on a deserted mountain top with no contact with other humans. Fifty thousand ways to make things go wrong, and five ways (with 25 steps each) to do it right. The theme of this book is (and I quote), “There are so many ways to make serious mistakes here.” This book is one long scolding. You are responsible for regulating your partner’s emotions and behaviors as well as your own emotions and behaviors. And if you don’t, it’s no wonder your life is a s***storm. Every single thing you say and do is suspect. Give up while you’re ahead and go live on a deserted island. That’s the only way to avoid inflicting severe emotional damage on those you love. (For useful and hopeful relationship information, read literally anything by the Gottmans - whom Tatkin quotes a couple of times.)

This is an amazing history lesson. It makes the connection between the past and the present.

Some good ideas and observations, but light on application. I can’t think of anyone whose marriage has failed who could have applied these rules and ultimately saved their marriage.

This is one of the worst books I’ve listened to on Audible. The first part of the story is just dumb and boring. (I tried to think of a better descriptor, but “dumb” sums it up best.) A family of bizarre characters engages in the most inane behaviors with zero thought to long- or short-term consequences. This makes it difficult to care about what happens to any of them. It’s total nonsense. The second part of the book is set during a civil war and treats the reader to repeated descriptions of brutality, rape, and torture. The story finishes with a few platitudes about how “everything happens for a reason” and even the torturers play a necessary role in the “jigsaw puzzle of life.” Right. Overall, this book was a huge disappointment. I’ll not read anything else by the author.

Informative story about the early management of leprosy

Although the story is fiction, Carville was a real place. It was a center of research for the development of effective management techniques for leprosy. A more effective drug treatment was not found until about 20 years after the time of this story. The author clearly depicts the social stigma of leprosy and its impact on families.
