Fans of Stephen King and Joe Hill that like to listen to audiobooks like The Bird Box and The Haunting and can't get enough stories about serial killers are going to enjoy listening to The Asylum Confessions. The majority of these killers are expert manipulators. I realize they could be playing me and messing with my head. It's a chance I'm willing to take. And now...they might just be playing with yours too.

I hope the other books will be able to be made into audio books. This series is an absolute favorite. Totally recommend to anyone with an interest in hearing these characters inner workings of their mind based on their “confessions”.

Historia
Peregrine Cavendish, 12th Earl of Enzie, has made a devil's bargain: he's going to sell Rowena, Isla's beautiful and innocent younger sister, to a known murderer in exchange for forgiveness of his debts. Tristan Mountbatten, the infamous Duke of Darkling Reach, has a habit of marrying such women and then disposing of them...horribly. For this and other reasons, there are rumors. That he practices the dark arts; that he's a necromancer; that he is, in fact a demon.

Only partial way through
Revisado: 04-02-23
I’m actually enjoying the book, the “info dumps” others talk about are refreshing, small and help you to understand it’s more gritty living than the fairy tale ones where everything smells great and their version of grungy is dirty clothes and smudged faces.
So far I’m enjoying the female lead and her being so practical! I love that she’s more strong internally and not the surface level only strength that many of the female leads are given. You know the ones that meet the male lead and suddenly become idiotic, mean and arrogant.
This book is one that I think I’ve been waiting for. Definitely give it a try!

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Smirks and sneers
Revisado: 12-08-22
On the whole I enjoyed the book. Some things in my opinion could’ve used different verbiage. Practically everyone sneers or smirks and tosses their head back. Again in my opinion (which can’t even buy you a cup of coffee) there were so many other words begging to be used in place of those three and some places they weren’t appropriate for the moment. But if you can get passed that it was fun to listen too. I truly did enjoy the book and the series as a whole.
Happy listening!

Better than anticipated
Revisado: 11-23-22
While some may not like some of the descriptions, I did enjoy how the book went.
My personal opinions to follow;
I feel as Though the devotion shown to mare seems thin and forced by the writer.
Mare often seems needlessly angry, crass and in general a mean girl outwardly to others which doesn’t make her likable. Even with us knowing her inner thoughts and feelings. I find it hard for the other characters to even like her since they don’t know anything but what she shows them.
The love interests are not really built on anything. There’s no strong foundation. I thought book 2 might have grown the foundations and make them stronger but it didn’t. The little “love” that was started shallowly in book one shouldn’t have survived all that happens in book 2.
What made it hard to swallow the “tender heartedness” for Maven was most of book one she forced herself to like him while swooning over Cal. But she “morns” over the Maven she thought he was that she barely liked as a friend to show how hard it is to get over his betrayal. He’s obsessed over her as the nut job he is without much logic which can be bought into just for the sake of the book.
The scenes are fun and interesting. The action definitely keeps the book worth listening too. However even though suspending logic and reality is needed it still doesn’t help the devotion of Cal & Kelorn to Mare at all.

Historia
For nearly four-hundred years, the Veil has protected us from the Fae of Alfheimr. In their absence, our lives have shifted from decadence and sin to survival and virtue under the guidance of the New Gods. I’ve spent my entire life tending to the gardens next to the boundary between our worlds, drawn to the shimmering magic like a moth to the flame. All of that changes the day the Veil shatters, unleashing the fae upon our world once again.

Evan Michaels struggles with being different, with having the complete memories of two other people who lived sequentially before him. He fights loneliness and believes he is unique until he meets Poppy. She recognizes his struggle because she is like him, except that she is much older, remembering seven consecutive lives. But there is something else she must share with Evan - she is a member of the secretive Cognomina. They are, in effect, immortals - compiling experiences and skills over lifetimes into near superhuman abilities that they have used to drive history over centuries.

A surprise enjoyment
Revisado: 10-18-21
Could it have been a little more in depth? yes. Could it have not left you hanging? Yes.
But honestly I live this book. It puts thought into things that will upset some and interest others.
I’d love a follow up and know I could definitely read every book if this turn into a series.
Give it a go. There maybe a few blips in the recording of it but it’s easily ignored. Give it a try if reincarnations and different views / questions about existence don’t bother you.

I definitely enjoyed this one
Revisado: 09-23-21
I listen and read many different type of romance novels. This had what a lot don’t which is that slow burn that leaves you wishing they would just get together. That heart hurting of how it’s practically impossible and yet they yearn for one another and you enjoy the obstacles they face.
I truly enjoyed this one and will have to kindle the rest as the second is not on audible yet at the time of this review.
I’m glad there wasn’t incredibly harsh drama just enough to make things difficult but not enough that you wish the author would just off the trouble makers. I’m glad I accidentally found this series. My suggestion take the chance, use the credit and enjoy.

I hope it gets better
Revisado: 09-13-21
I read raving reviews about this series. I have to be honest, I’m at chapter 11 of the first book and the world building is lacking, the characters shallow and it’s difficult to continue. I think the ideas here really are great and can make sense. The instant liaison between the 3 MC spurred on by illness is heavily contrived and not believable. I know it’s sci-fi romance but if I was being poisoned to death the last thing I’d be doing is writhing in imagined pleasure at impossibly long dragon shifter parts that would never fit when erect in some human woman. I’d be trying not to die not eyeing up their privates.
I don’t mind instant attraction that’s great but forgetting completely about the women that are also dying and in worse condition than you so you can get it on with just met dragon guys is something I can’t buy. The self serving attitude along with a silly attempt at “oh I’m sorta worried about the other ladies by keeping the others a secret because of imaginary dangers” irritated me.
The one dragon guy knows from her physical tells she’s lying but decides trying to have sex with her is way more important. I’m not positive I can continue with this book especially since so much is left to be desired. Maybe it gets better. I hope it does. But right now if I never finished this series I’d be ok.

Aliens. That's right. I said it. I know - it sounds stupid to me also. I'm a psychologist (sort of), so you'd think I'd be able to reason my way out of this mess. Except the reality is that I've been abducted to become their breeder, and it doesn't take an advanced degree to recognize this is all sorts of jacked up. But I digress. Apparently, these aliens are on the brink of extinction and need me and my fellow captives to repopulate. Yay us. I guess it's time to figure out an escape plan before they knock me up. I'll be back later. Hopefully.

It’s not terrible
Revisado: 11-12-20
This book didn’t have many fantastic reviews to go off of. I thought the idea behind the book was good so I bought it. Now I’m about halfway through it and it has good qualities and has some things left to be desired.
This story feels like it was fleshed out in the authors head but not all of it made its way to the page. There are aspects between the two main characters that would make more sense as time passes, except the concept of time passing is convoluted. The way it seems everything happens within a day maybe two. I enjoyed the female lead not being crazy in the hackneyed way of “omg aliens let’s freak and never get a handle on it until they see the amazing goods a alien man is packing” I like the humor used to deal with the situation and the wanting to comfort others.
The relationship / feelings of the main characters definitely could be more fully explained and given time to develop.
I understand the women are stolen for procreation And I like the clinical way they go about it, it makes sense for this type of story. What I wish was available was the thoughts behind the male character and more analysis from the female lead if we can’t have the male leads perspective.
There are also characters that just show up and the female lead seems to know them and have a background with them while I’m sitting here thinking I missed a chapter, like who is this alien dude?
In the end I don’t know if I’ll continue this book but I know I won’t return it. Returning books makes the authors go without payment and that’s horse hockey in my opinion. So even if I don’t finish it I’ll definitely be keeping it.
