The AI voice is a huge disservice.
Revisado: 06-06-24
The stories were good but the monotone voice that mispronounced and missed words was painful. I tried to focus on the stories, but then something would be misread or the lack of inflection would confuse the meaning and I’d focus on the robotic voice again. Please use humans to narrate!

Historia
Stay Away - An amazingly original horror novel from Ike Hamill Every small town has secrets. Some secrets can kill. He’s always been there, the old gentleman in the funeral suit, hanging around the big oak tree. Even before the cemetery was dug, the natives knew about him. He was just as much a part of the landscape as the rocks or the river. If you ever needed anything, especially if it was a matter of life and death, you could find him and make a trade. He always trades fair. Everybody says so. Eric is about to trade without even realizing it. He isn’t tricked. It’s only a mistake. ...

Yikes! AI narration…
Revisado: 04-19-24
The story was good and would likely flow better if actually read. The lack of inflection, tone, emotion and weird stops (they lasted long enough at times that I checked to see if it stopped playing) these stops that would normally be pauses were hard to get through. Characters were interesting, but felt a bit choppy. In truth I think it was all because of the narration.

My only wish is that this was longer. Within the first few minutes I was hooked. I love the relationship between mother and daughter.

Not a “traditional” tale of haunting
Revisado: 04-05-23
I really struggled through this book. Not scary. It’s a story of addiction. The main character’s need to feel love and be loved by a manipulator was just aggravating and uncomfortable.

Whining, mousey lead character
Revisado: 03-31-23
Maybe it’s the narrator, but if you didn’t know the setting you’d think it was a Victorian age piece. The female lead was in a constant state of fear (not over anything worthwhile- walking into new places, seeing a photo…) just an uninspiring character. The breathiness of the narration made it sound like she was close to tears at all times. By Chapter 7, an hour and forty minutes into the book the plot still hadn’t been introduced. This was a tough listen for me.

Not one likable character in the entire book!
Revisado: 08-27-22
It’s hard to pinpoint my issues with this book. The biggest issue was I hated every character in the book. The story was so-so. It wasn’t scary. It wasn’t a thriller. It just didn’t even come across as a Bentley Little book at all. The narration was kind of lackluster, but that kind of fit the book…

Leigh Harker’s quiet suburban home was her sanctuary for more than a decade, until things abruptly changed. Curtains open by themselves. Radios turn off and on. And a dark figure looms in the shadows of her bedroom door at night, watching her, waiting for her to finally let down her guard enough to fall asleep.

This was a struggle!
Revisado: 08-06-22
Normally a fan of Darcy Coates, but this felt droning and better served as a short story. It was kind of painful to listen to and I had to stop and listen to another book and come back to it. When you start thinking of it as just listen to it and get it over with, it’s not a good sign for a book.
The main character rambled to the point I felt she was just insane, but not in a good horror read kind of way, but the sad-eccentric woman people feel sorry for kind of way. I don’t want to give anything away for those that choose to read it, but my sincere hope by chapter 6 was that everyone would die and the book could be over.

Historia
When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

Tough to stick it out
Revisado: 04-10-20
I realized by Chapter 5 that I could have probably summarized the entire book, up to this point, in less than 2 paragraphs, due to endless over description. I almost felt I was being talked down to. Author tried painfully to be witty and pithy with the narrative, but it did not come off naturally. The main character is a book editor, and I was in utter shock that when she had the opportunity did not look into, or do any research into who "Anna" truly was. After listening through everything, it felt incomplete, but I couldn't fathom listening to anymore of it. There was a section of chapters in the middle of the book that were truly interesting, but the beginning and end were tough.
