Historia
Amber Patterson is fed up. She's tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more - a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted. To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne - a socialite and philanthropist - and her real-estate mogul husband, Jackson, are a couple straight out of a fairy tale. Amber's envy could eat her alive...if she didn't have a plan.

Unlikable characters
Revisado: 08-18-24
This is an okay summer getaway book, but I found all of the characters extremely disagreeable. I really wanted someone with ethics, smarts, and kindness. Even the ending was disappointing because suddenly it was all resolved and we weren’t in the loop to how it came about. I thought the narrator was good given the limited character development she had to work with.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Very Predictable
Revisado: 07-21-21
I enjoyed the premise of this book and even enjoyed the first third of it. After that, it all went downhill. I truly wish I had stopped listening at that point, but I trudged on to the very end for some reason. Perhaps because I kept thinking there would be something interesting that would happen or a twist ending. Nope. It’s like someone took the idea of Crazy Rich Asians and made it super dull and boring.
I give Phillipa Soo props since she did as well as she could with what she was given. Sometimes it’s hard to tell why an audiobook bombs (ie, is it the author or the narrator), and in this case it was clearly the fault of the writer.
Sorry, just skip this one.

Revisado: 05-22-19
I picked up this book not knowing anything about it, and what a delight. Like a swashbuckling Jane Austen. The story and dialogue are so inventive and the performance by Christian Coulson is just outstanding. He nails both the male and female roles quite easily. I’m going to look for other books by Mackenzie Lee and for those performed by Coulson.

Wonderful story. Wonderful narrator.
Revisado: 10-07-17
I'd read GWTW many years ago and loved it. However, listening to it, I gained a new appreciation for the story, the history, and the characters.
To be honest, I wasn't sure I was going to like the narrator Linda Stephens at the beginning. I thought she might make the story too long with her easy pace. However, after 49 hours, I've come to appreciate her and even admire her. She handles not only the story narration but each character is distinct and easy to identify. She also handles the accents well -- I especially give her props for Mammy's monologue near the end where she needed to handle both the accent and the emotions.
While the original GWTW is a masterpiece, and of course the movie is a classic, I think this audio version will become a gold standard as well. I'm glad to be able to have this in my library.

Historia
When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men.

Needed a good editing
Revisado: 12-01-15
This book in the Robert Galbraith series was so disappointing. I enjoyed the first two books immensely and have listened to them a couple of times, but this one was just not worth it. As usual, the reader, Robert Glenister did a superb job. He really has the characters down and is quite enjoyable to listen to. However, the story itself was really not good. First of all, the subject matter was downright grizzly and the author continues to tell you that in detail over and over again. That's the second problem. It feels like the author ran out of ideas about half-way through, so s/he started repeating him/herself -- another argument, another seedy bar, another swearing bad person. Which is another complaint -- the swearing. I really don't mind some swearing, but by the end of the book, it felt like the author had nothing for these very evil people to say, so they just started swearing more and more. I could tell it was a really really bad person because they were swearing so much. Personally, I was hoping for a bit more finesse and dialog over swearing and fighting. Lastly, some of the plot twists were absurd -- Robin's actions near the end really were stupid which is a shame because I had always admired her level-headedness. And the last scene was really not in character for either Robin or Strike. So, I will probably think twice before reading more of the Galbraith series (or at least read a lot of reviews before spending my next credit on one).

Mostly "meh" with a few huge laughs
Revisado: 12-24-14
You know that experience you get when you watch a DVD with the commentary turned on? This is basically a very long commentary about how the movie was made. There were parts of this audiobook which I disliked -- mostly the nauseating self-congratulatory tone. Phrases such as, "Little did we know this would become one of the most beloved movies of all times," are evident in nearly every chapter. With that being said, it was a quick fun read, a delight to hear the actual actors discussing their parts, and a few laugh-out-loud moments which make this audiobook worth a read. I especially enjoyed learning about Andrey the Giant and how the scene with Billy Crystal and Carol Kane was made. I also liked hearing how the actors had to train for the sword fight.

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

Fun Summer Read
Revisado: 06-26-13
If you're ready to sit down with a good "Grisham book," i.e. good characters, lawyers, action, twists and turns, then this is the one for you. Purely escapist delight. Okay, I could quibble about some of the plot points (would the lawyer/government really go along with that?) but that's not what this book is about. Also J.D. Jackson, the reader, is perfect for this book. I just spent all day yesterday listening because I had to know how it would end. I wasn't disappointed.

Fascinating But Repetitive
Revisado: 04-28-12
I love Apple and I find Steve Jobs to be an icon of our times. The book was a fascinating read -- especially the first part about forming Apple. But this book needed some serious editing. It feels like it was rushed to press. I found it to be quite repetitive since it often repeated some of the same stories numerous times.
(WARNING: SPOILER ALERT) Also, I was disappointed that the book ended without mentioning Jobs' death. That would have given the book the closure that it desperately needed rather than ending what was probably only about a month before his death.
