More of a meh than an outstanding.. actually, the beginning was pretty good, until we got bogged down in intricacies of the story.. love across millennia, 3000-year-old people, spiders, etc. It was all rolling along well, until at the very end, they all sort of got along and made a better place… that would never happen.

Seriously; this is the best story I've ever heard out of my 350+ books downloaded on audible. It was so good that I actually listened to it at 0.8x speed.. I slowed it down because I didn't want it to end.. I often listen to books at 1.5x because I just have to get through them.. Not this one..

Being an American, I had a few problems with some of the Irish colloquialisms, but reading enough and traveling to Europe often give me an a foundation to put it together.. The narration was like Nick Cave with a hangover.. The Dark humor and wry observations took the edge off bleak situations. If a reader didn't pick up on the innate humor of the book; it could be viewed as desolate. Using the timeline as a chaotic tool to paint the situation as a series of flashbacks and memories worked well. He's the Kurt Cobain of metaphor creation. I couldn't imagine another narrator being able to intone the novel so well. Usually, writers are good at writing and actors are good at reading, luckily Kevin Barry has both of those talents. Brilliant!

The book is well written, yet the focus of "The Hunt for MH370" is on political jockeying and buck-passing by the Australian air safety board. If the book focused as much energy on motives of the pilot as it did on nuances of an Australian crash report, it may have been a good read. Unfortunately the book focused on every "no comment" given by Australian political figures and this wasn't what we came here for. The books alleged cause of the tragedy put the blame squarely on the pilot; yet information in the book about the pilot was delegated to a few sentences.. Granted, information may have been difficult to get about the pilot but this is the reason why we came here and purchased the book. We didn't purchase a book to listen to political conjecturing, press rights and question dodging.. Perhaps this topic is just too difficult to write a book about because scant information is available?

I thought this book was going to be a more in-depth version of what the movie was, offering further insight into the characters and some of the ideas behind the plot. Unfortunately it was merely a summation of the movie, summarizing what happens in each scene, but really offering nothing more that wasn’t in the film.

This book is actually more depressing than the dystopian theme. The author chronicles The constant making of coffee, more than characters. A depressing road trip story, removed from reality and far from literature. The style of prose is incredibly weak, the dialogue is tedious and descriptions are slim. It's like a novel written with no art, no feeling. It reads like an Excel spreadsheet.

What disappointed you about Come and Take It?

I think this is the first time I've read a book where the following was true; you can take any paragraph out of this book and put it anywhere else within this book and it won't change the storyline. This book is a random compendium of insights, but without a plot it's incredibly difficult to follow. Characters pop in and out, descriptions are half explained & the storyline kind of wheezes along.. Is the story about Defense Distributed, a company that doesn't really manufacture anything, trying to disseminate 3D firearms files- they fail quite a bit and end up copying an existing polymer magazine. It's the self aggrandizing story of Cody's bumbling through manufacturing, raising money, R&D and ultimately sponging from some BitCoin guys.. I have a feeling that somebody else should have written this book, perhaps there is a good story beneath all these random insights, but Mr. Wilson can't document it. I think he had a journal with lots of small entries and tried to make a book of them; unfortunately the book reads like a journal of small entries.

Would you ever listen to anything by Cody Wilson again?

I think in a few years, Mr. Wilson will review this book and regret the hyperbole.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kirby Heyborne’s performances?

For the first couple of chapters, I actually thought that it was a computer reading the book, like a male Siri... I can't believe that was a human reading..

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The best redeeming quality about this book is audible's refund policy!

The characters in this book are incredibly brilliant and equally as synthetic. Motivated by unrealistic aspirations and thrown into a confusing plot, they just become more unrealistic as the story progresses. There are some interesting technical developments, but those don't save the story. Overall, not worth the time.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The first couple of novels by Bacigalupi were okay, but this one is a teen novel for high school students. It doesn't help that it was set in a high school environment, and read by somebody who sounds like they're in high school, but I was expecting some sort of sci-fi literature or something, not a novel concerned with school cliques and family arguments around the dinner table.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I should've done my research and looked at other books which Emma Galvin had narrated, and I would have seen mostly teen books and romance novels. Though the thought of a Jewish teen narrating a romance novel is beyond me.

Would you try another book from James Wesley, Rawles and/or Phil Gigante?

I have heard about this genre of books baed on the biblical interpretation of the coming of judgement day, but I mistook this book as a post-apocalypse novel, and I was stuck listening to stories of peoples prayer sessions, and their battle to be good christians in the face of turmoil.. Actually, during the listen (and I didn't get far) I had the novel feeling of rooting for the antagonists! I was thinking, "yes! the angry mob will get the fundamentalists this time!"

What do you think your next listen will be?

Something against religion.. maybe Freethinkers, by Susan Jacoby, or The End of Faith, by Sam Harris.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I should have been forewarned by looking closer at the author's name. Who puts a comma between their middle and last name? Like they are different thoughts that need separation? His middle and last name are clauses or adverbs, and just confused the reader when they were together? silly christians..

Deaver Brown had a few martinis and then set his iPhone up in a starbucks or maybe the back seat of an old car.. Seriously.. The audio quality is not even as good as an iPhone.. and the narration; he coughs, and mumbles and sort of drunkenly wanders atonally through the stories.. The book is great, but the technical issues of the recording remove any focus which you have on the literature.
