Everywhere around you are distractions: That text you respond to quickly, just to get it out of the way. The newest money-making side hustle to cross your mind. The evening spent organizing your overflowing kitchen cupboards. Disruptions are the enemies of a life well lived—both the new distractions of our generation and timeless ones that have existed for centuries. They all add up to make you feel restless, tired, and unfulfilled. They’re keeping you from living with joy, from accomplishing the good that only you can do.

Not for everyone.

If you are a woman who gave up her passion so long ago that you don’t even remember what it was so you could take care of special needs kids, aging in-laws or just the day to day of family life, this book might make you a little angry. If you are a middle income man who has a fantastic wife whose passion is raising your kids and supporting you in your career, quick go kiss her and thank her because you are so lucky to have found such a partner. Then, read this book and you can learn how to turn off your TV, put down your cell phone and do some service to help mankind.
I hate to bash this author because I really find value in his minimalist blog. But this book fails to address what real people’s actual lives are like. Many people are so overwhelmed with family “service” that they have compassion fatigue and burnout, and actually need a break from service outside themselves. They didn’t make a bad decision, life just happened and it didn’t happen in a story book kind of way. I know that privilege is a hot topic word in recent years, but I feel that this book is written from a place of privilege and will not resonate with many people especially women who are already giving their all as care givers. I admit that I only listened to about 1/2 the book, but felt that it was better for me to set it aside than be disgruntled by the suggestions.
If you have time and energy and can remember what you are passionate about, it’s a nice listen. But, it is definitely not a message everyone can act on.

Evanna Lynch’s casting as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films is a tale that grew to almost mythic proportions - a legend of how she faced disordered eating as a young girl, found solace in a beloved book series, and later landed the part of her favorite character. But that is not the whole story.

I loved this book and performance
Revisado: 10-25-21
This is the brave tale told in the authors own voice of the challenges of leaving an eating disorder behind and getting on with life. It sheds light on how poorly equipped UK hospitals are at helping those with anorexia and one would assume mental health issues in general. I found it inspirational, wise, funny, horrifying, sad, honest, illuminating and bold at different times throughout. It is definitely hard to put down. Thank you for your story Evanna Lynch! I hope that your honesty will work for good and systems will improve for eating disorder treatment in the near future.

In this thought-provoking audiobook, Tobias Leenaert leaves well-trodden animal advocacy paths and takes a fresh look at the strategies, objectives, and communication of the vegan and animal rights movement. He argues that given our present situation, with entire societies dependent on using animals, we need a very pragmatic approach. How to Create a Vegan World contains many valuable ideas and insights for both budding advocates for animals and seasoned activists, organizational leaders, and even entrepreneurs.

This would have been a nice magazine article.
Revisado: 08-24-20
If you have been a vegan for a while there is nothing new here. If you are a new vegan or new to activism it may be helpful. It is too long and repetitive for the substance of the message. The bottom line is be nice to people who are on the path to being vegan because they helping animals a lot more than you think and we should be happy about that. This is backed up with facts/statistics. In short, work hard and be nice to people.

I was really interested in reading this book but returned it once I realized the author was accused of sexual misconduct. Sorry, not supporting that in any way with my money. Hope to find a different book on the topic.

Historia
From the extra pounds and bullies that left her eating lunch alone at school to the low self-esteem that left her both physically and emotionally vulnerable to abuse, Jasmin Singer's weight defined her life. Even after she embraced a vegan lifestyle and a passion for animal rights advocacy, she defied any skinny vegan stereotypes by getting heavier. It was only after she committed to juice fasts and a diet of whole foods that she lost almost a hundred pounds and realized what it means to be truly full.

Not what I expected, could use trigger warnings
Revisado: 05-03-19
I did not know much about Jasmin before reading this. I had heard her on a vegan podcast, not her own and thought his book was about overcoming disordered eating with veganism. It’s is not really that. She was still very disordered while vegan and did not overcome disordered eating until adopting juice fasting which some might argue is also problematic. However, she did get results.
Besides the expected triggers of binge eating and anorexia/starvation. Readers need to be aware that other potentially triggering topics include date rape, graphic language in the harm done to animals on factory farms, self harm, and bullying.
I think I would have liked the narrative better if it stayed chronological. She discusses first food/being fat, then transition to vegetarian and vegan, the transition to lesbianism, then tattoos. When you are in the vegan part, you revisit previous years that you have already heard about and have to pull that all up again. Same with Sexual journey, rewind and play it all again for a new perspective, same with tattoos, although this section is much shorter. One chronological narrative would have been less confusing and a little shorter and I think equally as powerful. The section on juice fasting is very long and can be a bit much if that is not what you were planning to do.
The performance is excellent and I admire Jasmin for her passion, ability to overcome and willingness to share.

Historia
From his rapid-fire stand-up comedy riffs to his breakout role in Mork & Mindy and his Academy Award-winning performance in Good Will Hunting, Robin Williams was a singularly innovative and beloved entertainer. He often came across as a man possessed, holding forth on culture and politics while mixing in personal revelations - all with mercurial, tongue-twisting intensity as he inhabited and shed one character after another with lightning speed. But as Dave Itzkoff shows in this revelatory biography, Williams’ comic brilliance masked a deep well of conflicting emotions and self-doubt.

Fun, short listen
Revisado: 07-27-18
I liked this book. I treated myself when I got a $10 credit and bought low priced items not worth blowing a credit on. There is background music throughout, which might be a negative for some and a few times caused me to lose a word. It’s kind of like reading trivial pursuit cards for Harry Potter. At my level of fandom, (multiple times listener of the audio books), I learned things about the author, actors and films.

Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter had their lives turned upside down when they adopted their pig-daughter Esther - the so-called micro pig who turned out to be a full-sized commercial pig growing to a whopping 600 pounds - as they describe in their best-selling memoir Esther the Wonder Pig. Told with joy and humor and filled with delicious Esther-approved recipes dispersed throughout the book, this charming memoir captures an emotional journey of one little family advocating for animals everywhere.

Sequel to Esther the wonder pig
Revisado: 07-27-18
I think of you already know Steve, Derek and Esther from their social media platforms, you will like this book. I do follow Esther, so I found it an enjoyable addition to what I see on Facebook. If you are not a fan, I don’t think this book is for you. At minimum, you need to read Esther the Wonder Pig and decide if you want to continue. That is the place to start.
Otherwise, it is the tale of two city guys who decide to jump in and run an animal sanctuary named for their pig Esther. At least they are honest that this is a really bad idea if you have no farm experience, as is owning a pig in the first place. Some of the things that are “problems” to them will be laughable to readers depending on life experience, like how difficult it is to manage a woodpile and wood stove or how difficult it is to maintain fences. Other people might find this very informative.
I’m surprised at how many negative things made it into the book from in law problems, to a volunteer who stole their cat, to a volunteer they had to fire due to being too extreme. I’m sure these people aren’t too happy about the way they were portrayed and I’m not sure what the repercussions of that will be. The book ends with coverage of the Esther cruise fundraiser on a Carnival cruise ship, ignoring any ethical problems with the cruise industry.
So a mixed bag here, a fun story about a pig everyone loves, a lot of farm problems, and the airing of personal conflicts. If you love Esther, go for it. If you don’t know anything about it, read the other book first.

Ever since Darwin and The Descent of Man, the existence of humans has been attributed to our intelligence and adaptability. But in Catching Fire, renowned primatologist Richard Wrangham presents a startling alternative: our evolutionary success is the result of cooking. In a groundbreaking theory of our origins, Wrangham shows that the shift from raw to cooked foods was the key factor in human evolution.

Not inspired to finish
Revisado: 04-21-18
The evolutionary science at the beginning is interesting. Then the author goes on an anti raw foodist rant. They note that raw foods must be deficient in energy as the more raw food a person eats, the more weight they loose and the lower both their blood pressure and cholesterol are. Hmmm, maybe in this day of obesity, the weight loss was desirable? The next chapter goes into the Inuit and all the gross stuff they historically ate like blubber and animal droppings, just not sure I have the desire to continue.
