Good teen slasher fun
Revisado: 10-09-23
It delivered what it promised. It was fun, the deaths were enjoyable, and it didn’t take itself too seriously. Managed to avoid some YA traps, and doesn’t pretend teens don’t do “those kind of things”.
Hard to take a final girl seriously when she doesn’t keep a backup phone, though.

A bit drawn out and overperformed.
Revisado: 07-02-23
The story itself drug on a bit more than necessary, or rather the mystery felt extremely straight forward and there was a lot of filler. The performer is clearly not at home with American accents and since there was so many in this book it was much more obvious.
I also found it moderately irritating that the author repeatedly seems to imply that Scotland Yard is or was an incorruptible police agency. Like it’s definitely not inaccurate about American police, then or now. But let’s not pretend Scotland Yard is a beacon of decency.

Historia
When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world. Most of all, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success.

They’re from the south…
Revisado: 03-13-23
So how come none of the performers on Grady Hendrix books ever use a southern accent? I understand maybe why you wouldn’t with Louise, but the cousins and Aunts and everyone back home are clearly written with southern inflection. Not reading it that way detracts from the character depth.
Of course I love the book though. I read it before I listened to the audiobook version, and the humor and heart come across better in writing.
