Hats off to Fred Berman for his reading of Flowers for Algernon. I wondered/worried how the story's original "visual clues" of text would translate to the spoken word. Not to worry. Berman's amazing acting job perfectly captures the main character's mental journey.

…and as a fantasy, a thin one at that. Couldn’t get more that 15 minutes into it.

Silliness, and not in a good way. Sounds like high schoolers wrote and produced this.

Ok. Granted it’s tongue in cheek but felt like an odd ball commercial to get me to watch the series.

Sci-Fi is at its best when used as a framework for social commentary, making us think about old problems and ideas in the context of a new world. Initially, no one would publish Ray Bradbury's 1951 story "The Other Foot" in which White People are forced to flee a war-torn Earth. The problem is, Mars is a colony entirely of formerly ostracized Blacks. Reverse Jim-Crow laws are considered... then rejected.

So... if you don't think you can read a story in which one of the characters is trans, then by all means, this is not the book for you. But I think M.R.Carey follows in "The Walking Dead"'s best tradition of re-imagining the ways in which individuals and communities wrestle with dysfunction, corruption, power, religion and sexuality. The book is a metaphor for the indomitable force of life, whether animal/vegetable, human, or artificially intelligent.

I've finished the third book, and while the series is not perfect (name one that is...) it hits all the highs I need. There are characters that will stay with you for life. Koli and Monono are two.

There are some books you can't put down. This was not one of those.
I still can't put my finger on why I didn't like it. The style is overly colorful but in a fun, sassy, profane way. The main character is likeable and the world premise is interesting but... Perhaps lack of compelling motivation. I cannot imagine following this as a trilogy.

Brilliantly textured, logically consistent post-apocalyptic world. Narrator Solomon and Carey are perfectly in sync. While our main character makes some knuckle-headed moves, they are all understandable given his upbringing and world view.

I'm off to get the second book in the series -- something I am almost never motivated to do!

A infuriating ride. Moments of brilliance followed by mind-numbing, illogical disconnects. Memorable characters held together with magical technological glue. Bray, as always, makes these characters come alive.

Some sections were beautifully written, in others the plot felt too trite, predictable or convenient. A light pleasant read. Nothing really to dislike, but for me, not enough to pursue the rest of the series.
