What a President should be
Revisado: 04-20-25
Hearing Jimmy Carter's voice again was wonderful. From a bipartisan perspective, Carter was a decent and respectable person. Hearing his personal background and his own assessment of his career was worthwhile.

I'm not normally a fan of historical fiction. This book has solid factual underpinnings incorporated into compelling scenes and dialogue. The protagonist is an inspiring historical figure. Robin Niles reads the book exquisitely.

Historia
Fully updated chapters continue to address how technology and increasing levels of education have exposed people to more information than ever before. These societal gains, however, have also helped fuel a surge in narcissistic and misguided intellectual egalitarianism that has crippled informed debates on any number of issues. Over the past several years, the rise of populism and conspiracy theories have taken this to new levels. All voices, even the most ridiculous, demand to be taken with equal seriousness, and any claim to the contrary is dismissed as undemocratic elitism.

Uninformed opinions and charisma are no substitute for facts and expertise. The desire for equality has been adulterated to assume that all opinions are equal, despite facts that dispute opinions.

True horrors of slavery
Revisado: 12-31-24
The horrific story of slavery, told by a black freeman who was kidnapped and sold into slavery, is a sad chapter in our history. Man's inhumanity to man is given in excruciating detail. It was read by "virtual voice" which greatly lessened the listening experience with mispronounced words and flat affect.

Historia
In 1994, an idealistic first-year teacher in Long Beach, California, named Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students. She had intercepted a note with an ugly racial caricature and angrily declared that this was precisely the sort of thing that led to the Holocaust. She was met by uncomprehending looks - none of her students had heard of one of the defining moments of the 20th century. So she rebooted her entire curriculum, using treasured books such as Anne Frank’s diary as her guide to combat intolerance and misunderstanding.

Historia
Here is a visionary analysis of how the politics of fear, secrecy, cronyism, and blind faith have combined with the public sphere's degradation to create an environment dangerously hostile to reason. Never has there been a worse time for us to lose the capacity to face the reality of our long-term challenges, from national security to the economy, from issues of health and social welfare to the environment. As The Assault on Reason explains, we have precious little time to waste.

Good for thought
Revisado: 06-09-24
I listened to this when it came out in 2008. The current version has a chapter added in 2017. I'm a big fan of Al Gore, and can still see his perspective, which may have a hint of bias. There is a lot said against George W Bush's administration and the added chapter gives criticism of Trump. Full of facts and figures, he supports his concerns well. Will Patton does a superlative job of delivering it all.

Historia
The culture wars are over and the idiots have won. This is a veteran journalist’s caustically funny, righteously angry lament about the glorification of ignorance in the United States. The three Great Premises of Idiot America: · Any theory is valid if it sells books, soaks up ratings, or otherwise moves units; anything can be true if someone says it loudly enough; "fact" is that which enough people believe. And "truth" is determined by how fervently they believe it.

Historia
In 1855, with the United States at odds over slavery, the lawyer Abraham Lincoln wrote a note to his best friend, the son of a Kentucky slaveowner. Lincoln rebuked his friend for failing to oppose slavery. But he added: “If for this you and I must differ, differ we must,” and said they would be friends forever. Throughout his life and political career, Lincoln often agreed to disagree.

Lincoln as a Person
Revisado: 11-26-23
As a nation, we tend to deify our Presidents who left a big footprint on the progress of our country. The author shows Lincoln's capabilities in making political allies and using political acumen in managing public opinion. His mistakes and personal shortcomings are in full view. The research for the book is solid and verifiable. The audible delivery by the author is perfect.
