Historia
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Hate to go against the grain but…
Revisado: 12-28-21
I don’t get the hype behind this one, at all. I know that it’s a legendary book and others have pointed out that it is much better read than listened to, which I believe. However, my low rating is not the fault of the narrator. Actually, I think I DID get the gist of the story by listening and just never warmed up to it.
The book is about a family from generation-to-generation over a century or so. A lot of the characters have the same or similar names which makes it tough to follow, but it can be done with effort. Most of the characters are unlikeable and the setting of the story never changes. Mean people come, mean people go. The story just drones on without anything really interesting happening. I held out, but not even the ending made it worthwhile.

Historia
In this sweeping novel, James A. Michener chronicles eight tumultuous centuries as three Polish families live out their destinies. With an inspiring tradition of resistance to brutal invaders, from the barbarians to the Nazis, and a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, their common story reaches a breathtaking culmination in the historic showdown between the ruthless Communists and rebellious farmers of the modern age.

Could not get into this
Revisado: 01-16-21
I had to give up after 8 hours. The narrator’s voice is too robotic and quite intolerable for long stretches. Also, the story really goes no where. Maybe I’ll pick this book up and try again someday because I am interested in the history of Poland, but for now, there are better things to listen to.

Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

Exceeded my expectations
Revisado: 09-24-20
I love the Kingsbridge trilogy but did not have high hopes for prequel. This book exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly enjoy this little world that Ken Follett has built and with this book, just like his others, I never want it to end. Narration by John Lee cannot be beat.

Historia
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

Finished it but...
Revisado: 05-05-20
I somehow slogged through the entire book, but never really did figure out what or who it was about. The characters barely coalesced. The story never got around to a point. War story? A little. Love story? A little. Ernest Hemingway chronicle? A little. Narration was a little drawn out also. This book tries hard but falls short.

Some parts of this book were predictable BUT there were also some really fun twists. I had to know what would happen next, down to the last few minutes. Wonderful for a free book. I really enjoyed the writing style of J.P. Pomare and am looking forward to trying some of his other works.

Historia
After former Justice Department agent Cotton Malone witnesses the theft of one of them, he learns from his old boss, Stephanie Nelle, that a private auction is about to be held where incriminating information on the president of Poland will be offered to the highest bidder - blackmail that both the United States and Russia want, but for vastly different reasons. The price of admission to that auction is one of the relics, so Malone is first sent to a castle in Poland to steal the Holy Lance, a 1,000-year-old spear sacred to not only Christians but to the Polish people.

Overdone
Revisado: 04-07-20
Not my favorite. I think this was my second or third time on a Cotton Malone adventure, but I found myself really not liking his character in this book. The arrogance and snide remarks were too much. Also, I’m pretty liberal but the political undertones of this book are pushed HARD. There were historical parts of this book that were genuinely interesting, especially because I have Polish heritage; however, after the “auction” scene, I found myself just wanting to book to end.

I wanted to like this book more...
Revisado: 03-10-20
As a fellow Michigander and National Park enthusiastic, I really wanted to like this book. I hoped it would be interesting and informative, but at some point—at least for me—it became dreadfully boring. I could not bring myself to finish the book with three hours left. To his credit, Mark Kenyon did his research and knows his stuff. This one just wasn’t for me.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Like hearing a crazy story from your friend
Revisado: 03-10-20
James Dommek Jr. is a young guy and it’s noticeable throughout the book. Not necessarily a bad thing because this book literally feels like you’re having a few beers with one of your good friends and he’s says, “So dude, listen to this s#%t!” Good storytelling. Interesting story. Well-timed humor. Super casual format. I really liked it.

Too choppy
Revisado: 11-16-19
This book offers a cool history lesson about Sarum and England in general, but just when you get hooked on a story line and comfortable with a group of characters, the book fast forwards 100 years and it’s all gone. Just when things start getting good, you have to start over again. Over and over. Just not my cup of tea.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

I really enjoyed this book and appreciate the author’s hard work and dedication. Story was gripping. Performance was also great, although I found myself wondering how a guy from Ohio acquired a Canadian accent.
