The authors provide rare insight into the subterranean war that in some ways defined the conflict in Vietnam. The magnitude of the tunnel systems in use were likely never understood by American Ground commanders until well after American involvement ended if at all. To their credit, the authors do this with a rich, unbiased perspective of both sides involved.

Well worth a listen.

John Boyd was an interesting if eccentric man. He offered some innovative ideas. But, he changed warfare in the air or on the ground in no appreciable way. Make no mistake, warfare changed. But John Boyd had nothing to do with it. His greatest credit was the development of the lightweight and demonstrably less expensive F-16 when the bureaucracy that is the DoD wanted bigger, heavier more expensive fighters. Stalin once said “Quantity has its own quality.” While I’m not a fan of Stalin, he wasn’t wrong. Fast forward to today and we’re right back to buying mega expensive aircraft in limited quantities that will likely never have all of the issues worked out before they’re obsolete. The F-22 may retire with it’s only “kill” being a Chinese spy balloon.

Love Mark Greaney, liked this story until the Airplane stuff. Casa 212 is a turboprop. Actually a fairly large airplane. It’s not a Ford pickup with a standard transmission. There won’t be any push starting it off an 8000 foot cliff. And extra thrust from small arms fire out the back? Straight outta an 80’s A-Team espisode. So many problems with that entire scene that make the story untenable. Still, Josh is an interesting character. I’d like to see him back with a little more thought to realism.

I can’t say enough about this series. As of this writing, there are 10 books in the survivalist series. I’ve read all of them twice, many three times just waiting for the next book in the series to be released. The stories are gritty, plausible and extensively researched. Reminding us there is no easy day post-apocalypse. Every wake up brings another fight to survive.

I wager that if you enjoy the genre and read the first book, you’ll be inescapably hooked on the series.

My only concern is the author will grow tired of the series and leave us hanging. C’mon A. American, give us the next book!

Highly disappointed in this book. While the narration was excellent, the storyline seems like it was conceived by a sixth-grader - McCall is everything to every man. The key to any book of this nature is plausibility. This story lacks any shred of that. A truly fantastical farce.

As a 14 year old, McCall Singlehandedly beats up an entire high school varsity football team. He is a friend to the mole people, a subsurface society living in the sewers of New York. He beats Notable daily chess players in three moves simply because he needs their attention. And the “Company’s” best plan for recovering McCall and A critical asset is for them to travel half way across Russia On their own to arrive at an extraction point. No effort to actually go get them. I know, gas is expensive and budgets are tight. Perhaps that’s why they send a single attack helicopter with no utility helicopter to pick up McCall. I guess the plan was to strap his super human self to winglet and ride out of battle that way.

Also, the author’s research was straight out of Wikipedia. He knows absolutely nothing about weapons or weapons systems and didn’t bother to learn while preparing for this book. My favorite is his description of the AH-64 helicopter. It was literally written from some encyclopedic description of the aircraft without ever seeing the actual helicopter or discussing its operation and employment with someone who had flown one.

The final straw however, came when McCall captures a serial stalker and rapist, coerces a promise to leave town and leave the victim alone. After being released, the rapist literally asks him “Aren’t you afraid I’ll do it again somewhere else?” McCall’s response -“Not my problem.”

The book is just over 21 hours in length. I had to bail with 6 hours remaining to retain my sanity.

I’m Sad...

Let’s make some things perfectly clear about this story. First, No one outside the Washington beltway, military brass or military-industrial complex wanted to be in Vietnam. Not the helicopter crews and certainly not the conscript grunts on the ground. Second, Robert Mason was a volunteer. He joined the Army to learn to fly helicopters to fill a boyhood dream. He did this as a full scale war was developing in Southeast Asia. To expect to reap the benefits without doing any work is rather disingenuous. Third, ALL of the horror of American troops committing atrocities Mason details are DREAMS he is subtly trying to pass off as reality. They’re figments of his imagination. In other words, (like much of this book) he made them up. Fourth, The author participated in some high intensity operations during his tour of duty. But, his experiences and his performance were mediocre relative many others during those same operations. Fifth, this book is simply an attempt to establish Mr Mason as a victim. He does this to justify his failure at life. The author failed at many things. He even attempted smuggling drugs and failed at that. Somehow he did succeed at making this fictional book a best seller however. So, while Mason should’ve been engaged in a celebratory book signing tour in book stores across America, he was enjoying himself in Cell Block D as Bubba’s bunk muffin. Yes, Mason is a loser, pseudo-victim and failed drug runner.

Thus with the above clearly stated:

1. I’m sad many will read his words and believe them as fact vice the claptrap they are.
2. I’m sad Mr Mason wasn’t drafted and sent to war as a conscript grunt.
3. I’m sad the author isn’t the victim he tries so hard to be.
4. I’m sad I spent money on this book.
5. But most of all, I’m sad I’ve spent hours reading this rubbish that I can never reclaim.

Signed,

Lieutenant Colonel (and former CW3/Aviation)
USAR/ret

A solid and enjoyable old western novel with historical roots in the Missouri/Kansas border conflict of the American Civil War. A particularly ugly region of what was already a bloody and vile struggle.

The story was brought to life by Clint Eastwood in the movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales."

Well worth the read.

The book is not advanced, nor complete, contained no "secret strategies" for investing in anything, was poorly recorded and even more poorly edited. Other than that, it was a completely marginal (and basic) examination of investing with a nod toward options trading.

An eclectic assortment of stories, many only loosely associated with the genre. Some of the stories are quite good, some not so good. A couple downright oppressive. Unfortunately, it's difficult to sort them in the audio format.
