Virtual Voice Ruins The Book
Revisado: 03-22-24
Virtual Voice isn’t always a bad thing. It’s great for “how to” books but it really misses the mark for romances, especially MC romance. The stilted cadence and robotic reading ruins the story and is distracting. Think- 1950’s robot librarian reading steamy scenes. It’s cringy/funny. Probably not what the author intended. I skipped chapters to get to the end and will avoid VV moving forward.

Historia
In the heart of Louisiana, the most powerful people in the South live behind elegant gates, mossy trees, and pleasant masks. Once every 10 years, the pretense falls away and a tournament is held to determine who will rule them. The Acquisition is a crucible for the Southern nobility, a love letter written to a time when barbarism was enshrined as law. Now, Sinclair Vinemont is in the running to claim the prize. There is only one way to win, and he has the key to do it - Stella Rousseau, his Acquisition.

Dark and WOW Narration
Revisado: 12-28-23
First, whenever I hear a southern narration, I cringe. Being thoroughly southern, I usually hate, and at best, tolerate a southern act. However, this…. THIS book is outstanding. I’ve listened to so many Audible books and these narrators are the best. The female narrator masters the angst and build of the intimate scenes. You will feel yourself physically drawn to by the cadence and words. I can usually walk away from a cliff hanger, but not this one. Highly, highly recommend.

Wow! Just wow!
Revisado: 06-22-23
I loved this book so much! It is incredibly compelling, funny, touching, sweet, and suspenseful. Everything wraps up nicely at the end, but there are still pieces falling into place in the last few minutes.
Wonderful narrator and writing. I am new to this author and will be listening to her other books based off this experience!

Don’t Regret Listening, But Have Unanswered Questions
Revisado: 05-03-23
First, I love this series and I am a big fan of Lisa Wingate’s writing. This book is no different. However, her books usually don’t leave unanswered questions and this one did. The main points were all resolved, but there were some, in my opinion, three significant points that were not. They are spoilers if I list them, so I won’t! Maybe the point was to leave us wondering, but these don’t seem like thought provoking existential questions to ponder long after you’re done listening. Just details that could have added context and “aha” moments. That said, I don’t regret the time listening… superb writing as usual!

GREAT listen!
Revisado: 04-19-23
I’m not normally into procedurals, but the location and blurb got me interested. The narrator is really good, but makes the character sound older than the book says he is. That is nit picky and may not come across that way to anyone else. His pace and the way he narrates are perfection.
The writing is engaging and the story moves smoothly from person to person and point to point. There are some gut-wrenching parts. No solid trigger warnings, but if your heart is beating, it will hurt at times during the book.
I guessed the killer… sort of. No spoilers! But, the ending is such that even if you guess the killer, you won’t be disappointed.
I liked this enough that I purchased the second book before finishing the first. Can’t wait to listen to them all!

It’s officially booty o’clock, I’m alone again in my kitchen choking down a slice of terrible chocolate cake…and I’m pretty sure I just got drunk texted by the man I have a ginormous crush on. I’ve been daydreaming about Eliot Hoffman’s dimples for two months, and even though I’m sure this was a mistake on his end, it doesn’t mean it’s not an opportunity on mine. It’s the middle of the night, and I just wanna talk to him. So I text him back.

Excellent story, production, and narration
Revisado: 12-11-22
I listen to a LOT of audio books. Usually 3-5 per week. However, this author is new to me. I originally played it because I am a huge fan of Chris Brinkley’s audio performance. Now, I am also a huge fan of Cara Bastone and Lidia Dornet. I will be reading/listening to more of Bastone’s books immediately after I am done listening to this again.
My face hurt after I was done with this book. I smiled the whole time, gasped, giggled, and just generally felt joy. The writing and characters are incredibly endearing. I felt like I was dating and rooted for the main characters wholeheartedly. From the writing to the flawless performance and production, I cannot recommend this listen enough!

The Wheatons are infamous among the east coast elite for their lack of impulse control, except for their daughter Clara. She’s the consummate socialite: over-achieving, well-mannered, predictable. But every Wheaton has their weakness. When Clara’s childhood crush invites her to move cross-country, the offer is too tempting to resist. Unfortunately, it’s also too good to be true.

Fun storyline, be prepared for the content!
Revisado: 12-04-22
I’ve read this book a couple of times now and still love it. The banter is funny and not too over the top, especially considering the very sexual themes (not digging into that so I don’t spoil anything!). The content is very sexual, so if you don’t typically like a spicy book, this may not be for you. However if you do, this book will give it to you in spades! There is a second book that follows the same characters. It’s also a must-listen!

Lots of Sex... Not So Much Plot
Revisado: 04-27-21
There are parts of this book I liked and even made me smile. However, the longer I listened, the more repetitive the dialogue (especially pet names) and sex were. The sex is near constant, so if you are looking for a lot of sex with very little drama or development, this is your book. If you are used to books that are story and plot heavy with a smattering of sex, this is different. It may be your thing... just good to know going in.
The main male character’s behavior is troubling at times. I kept waiting for him to be a stalker or murderer with some of his tantrums and verbiage. The book is engaging enough, but by the middle, I wished for it to end.

Stick With It...
Revisado: 01-29-20
Here are a few things you need to know before purchasing this book:
- If you are a Loreth Anne White fan, the storyline is different than her other publications. It still has some of the same tones, but is darker. When I started this, I had just finished The Dark Bones. (Obviously a L.A.W. fan, here!) This is totally different. The writing is still fantastic and beautifully (or disturbingly) descriptive. She brings the scenery, smells, and personalities to life.
- The narrator takes some "getting used to". She uses a long "e" for words that don't call for it. ie - "bean" for "been". I was very glad I read reviews that prepared me for this, but it was still difficult to listen to for a while. I wasn't sure I could make it through the whole book with her narration, but the pronunciation became less noticeable and her voice really lends itself to the latter half of the book. She does a nice job differentiating characters.
- The book takes some time to pick up speed. Stick with it. In the beginning, I made myself keep listening. By the middle, I couldn't stop! The details laid out in the beginning "make" the ending.
Such a great, well thought through story with satisfyingly developed characters. I always listen to books twice to have a different perspective and catch any details or nuances that I missed the first time around. I just finished the first listen and am looking forward to the second!

...The SUSPENSE!
Revisado: 01-29-18
As the second book, following an incredible series starter, my expectations were pretty high. This book surpassed them. The suspense is almost too much at times and I found myself listening at every possible second to figure out what was going to happen. There are so many twists and turns and points that bring the story to the brink of destruction. Compared to the first book, this one has more suspense and more action. There does seem to be more chatter in this book. Some of which could be lost and not missed.
I like the writing/narration from the separate characters points of view and think the voice actors, particularly Sam's actor, did a great job of bringing the story to life.
Will definitely read the 3rd book and can't wait for it to come out in December!!
