I’ve not read this author before so I was in for an unexpected treat. Hidden depths and fully realized characters make it a perfect choice for me. The look into book publishing in the 1950’s and 1960’s was a plus.

Notable and readable author Bryson has produced a Christmas history for both entertainment and edification. Please Mr Bryson, publish a print copy as well. A must read/listen

A novel possessing all the feels, all the surprises, all the laughs and the best chemistry! Don’t miss this one. Take it with you wherever you go this summer. You won’t want to put it down, Gave the narrator only four stars because who doesn’t look up how to pronounce Jack LaLanne, but otherwise no real complaint

Cozy without being saccharine sweet, The Book Charmer doesn’t pontificate on talking books, but rather accepts them as another little detail of the many talents of the Dove family. Like a cup of Ava Dove’s tea, I suspect this novel is just right for those who need it. I did. Glad it’s in my library. Balances out my overly heavy investment in detective fiction and political commentary.

No one reading this series should expect meaningful incremental advances in the protagonists’ significantly flawed personal lives. Throughout the series the author has dragged out each element of character development to the point that I often wish Lynley had been the one shot dead on the doorstep instead of Helen. As a consequence of lowered expectations about, and flagging interest in, the main characters, I am better able to appreciate the machinations of George’s murderers and the pursuit of justice in her series. Something to Hide is a fine addition to British detective fiction with plenty of twists and turns and sound police work (if you ignore the passport cockup). Plus the secondary character of Dee at the yard provides much needed humor. Finally, kudos to Ms George for her well researched focus on the tragic mutilation of female infants and girls. I enjoyed this installment, but I’m really ready for some stand alone novels as Lynley and Havers are so static.

OMG! Spot on concept. My only disappointment was that the kids weren’t sufficiently humbled. There should be an Easter follow up story in which the TV host features the mom. I wanted to throttle the kid who nixed the pizza

I’ve read and enjoyed most of Moriarty’s books. Not this one. I just can’t get interested. Halfway through and no interest in finishing it. I wish I could remember what I didn’t like, but after a week of skipping over it to choose something else, I’m clueless

If you live in Washington State, you must read the crow “S.T’s” hopeful account of “He Who Keeps”. I loved this hilarious hymn to our natural world (state and Seattle area) and love letter to our animal companions and yes, salute to our “mofo” nature and culture. All this framed by a zombie apocalypse that is more Shaun of the Dead than the Walking Dead. I loved the familiar landmarks and PNW cultural references (Wenatchee even gets a mention albeit as the state ferry named for my town). The Seattle aquarium is particularly effective as a setting. So much fun!!! Plus an implied warning that we “mofo’s” are overreaching and the earth may not tolerate our greed and self absorption much longer. You’ll consider reducing screen time once you’ve read Hollow Kingdom

Everything was too much. Scott Brick must have needed oxygen handy as he’s unnecessarily breathless throughout this too long, too silly, meandering novel. After awhile I nearly started rooting for the bad guys whoever they were because the protagonist does almost as much harm as they do. Truly, the editor of this book deserves an award of some sort. Who knows what a hot mess this was before it was edited. The first half is decent, but after that it’s ridiculous. Just too much going on to actually care about any one character much.

I recently learned of Kate Warne and her service to the famous Pinkerton Agency as its first woman detective. She impressed Mr Pinkerton so greatly that he not only spoke well of her during her lifetime, but arranged for her burial in his own family plot. Who was this noteworthy pioneer? Maccallister’s fictional account provides some answers and plenty of reasons to appreciate Mrs Warne. The performance by Stephanie Cozart adds greatly to the pleasure of Mrs Warne’s company. I’ll be looking for Cozart’s narration on other Audible selections.
