Historia
When Nigel Baxter, a middle-aged married banker with an unremarkable past, is found dead in the bath of a plush hotel suite, his wrists slit, it looks as if he's taken his own life. At first. But when Detective Inspector Daniel Riley is assigned to the case, he soon realises all isn't as it first appears to be. When a postmortem shows Baxter was poisoned, Riley suspects foul play. And then there's the odd addition of a teddy bear left at the crime scene....

I was genuinely captivated
Revisado: 05-05-24
Recently, I had spent one of my credits on a book that was highly rated on a book suggestion list. I was so dissappointed. I'd almost swear an AI at least helped write it. With that book, besides a weak story, I felt zero investment in any of the characters.
This book, however, was included in the Audible library (free). In contrast to the previous listen, I couldn't wait to hear what happened next. The right amout of time and detail was spent learning about the main character. I really felt for the detective and found myself caring about him. I was even invested in the second victim and the murderer. The story was solid overall and I appreciated how the murder was "solved" in the end. The wrap up was poetic as well. I was uncertain about the narrator at first but he really settled into the main character and did an good job at portraying the voices of the other characters in the story (this must be the toughest part of narration).
All in all I highly recommend this book. I will be looking into other works from this author. Last but not least, don't judge a book by it's "cost" especially here on Audible. This is a solid reminder that Audible puts out high quality content.

Historia
Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

it was ok
Revisado: 04-29-24
When I was searching for a listen, this book was on a top list at number 2. It had rave reviews. Other reviewers talked about the twists and turns from start to finish. I have an hour and a half left....I assume there is a plot twist coming? So far, I'm not invested in any of the characters and the crimes aren't shocking (again, partially due to not being invested in the characters). The main character Divine has moments where he should definitely be smarter and connect things faster. I'll finish the book just to have the mystery solved but so far I do not recommend.

These books are a true delight
Revisado: 10-06-23
I'm a big fan of detective procedurals and small town mysteries - these books are so well written. You would think following single mom Paislee Shaw through her day to day life trying to juggle (literally) everything would be a boring lull in the story. For me, it's the opposite. Traci Hall has created a rich full character that I feel like I have gotten to "know" and I can very much relate to. I find myself having up and down emotions when Paislee does. I root for her and delight in her wins. On to the next one...where is Craig? I have to know lol.
Beverly A. Crick and this book series were made for each other. Amazing performace!
I will complete this whole series and probably wish for more.

What an amazing rich story!
Revisado: 09-06-23
When I was young (6?), I remember watching the Watership Down animated film. I don't remember if I finished it, but I remember it being scary. Now that I'm in my 50's and found it in Audible, I felt it was long overdue to revisit it officially. I'm so glad I did....WOW what a masterpiece. I can see why it might be a bit much for kids under 12, but as an adult, I loved everything about it. The obviously well written and properly paced story had me hanging on for every second. Peter Capaldi was the perfect choice for narration. Peter got me to completely forget that the story is actually being read by one person - that is pure art and skill. Bravo

I couldn't put this book down. It was so good and I HAD to know what happened next. The narration was so amazing; I was fully immersed and captivated. As a mom myself, I felt tears well up in my eyes half a dozen times. I loved the ending.

The story was good - the narration not so much
Revisado: 02-28-23
A good narrator can immerse the listener into the story with emotional inflection and proper story pacing. This narrator read the book like a student who was asked to read a passage in front of the class. not terrible persay....but definitely dry and dull.
I like crime thrillers like this one especially when they are in a long series of novels, but I don't know if I can get onboard with this series with that narrator. I might try ine more after I take a break to another book.

Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Paula McIntyre and her partner Elinor must deal with a cruel cyber-blackmailer targeting their teenage ward, Torin.

I'm done with the series & terrible narration
Revisado: 09-15-22
UPDATE 9/17: I'm finished with the Tony Hill / Carol Jordan series. Not only was the narration the worst, the ending was a dumpster fire. It's a shame because I loved the series up to that point. I'll miss Stacey Chen the most.
9/15 I'm half way through the book and I will finish it because I love the Tony Hill / Carol Jordan series. (see update)
The narrator was a very wrong choice for this novel. The character voices were awful. In my opinion, several of the character voices border on racist. The one teen character sounds like an older man doing whiny baby talk. This narrator might be much better suited for an English Victorian/ Edwardian era mystery novel.

Just started listening...to be continued...
Revisado: 07-24-22
At the end of the book I will come back and polish this review for story ascpects. However, right off the bat, this book has two major things going for it: Blackstone Audio and David Linski. I'm already biased. I've listened to many audio books over the years and Blackstone Audio Inc has the best audio production quality. I don't know their secrets, but if it's coming from them it's going to be spectacular. David Linski is one of my top three favorite narrators along with Neil Gaiman and Alan Cumming. These three narrators could read me the encyclopedia and I would be swept away. Lastly, I have an Achilles heel for crime, suspense, thrillers, fantasy, and espionage. If this novel doesn't knock my socks off, I know where to point the finger. Stay tuned!

oooooh I loved the ending!
Revisado: 05-12-22
I wont give spoilers, but this type of story telling is exactly what I LOVE. It had a bit of a lull but then my ears perked up.
Performance: I was worried at first because I did not like how the female voice was narrated (robotic? Too strong pronunciation of the letter T?) In the end though, it all worked for me for various reasons. Also, it did really feel like totally different characters so bravo on that.
I'll be checking out more books and novellas from this author.

not feeling the narrator on this one
Revisado: 05-03-22
the story is good. I'm not all the way through it yet. I'm struggling with the narrator though. He sounds like a 15 year old with minor sinus issues and a mild vocal fray. His accents aren't bad. A narrator can make or break an audio book. I worry about this narration selection for this book series.
Note: I probably have near impossible standards for narrators so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
