Fast-paced and compelling story with flowing and believable dialogue. Right amount of mystery without getting into the weeds. The narration was excellent, sans cringeworthy accents or voices.

The storyline is weak, characters not developed, and their mutual attraction is nonsensical. I had a hard time finishing it, but I hung in there rooting for it to improve- which never happened. At least it was free.

Meryl Streep’s narration was lovely- but Ephron’s dated homophobic & racist rants were disappointing, I suppose that’s what I get for reading the book 40+ years after publication. Did not meet my expectations.

I tried this book when it popped up in my suggestions, partly bc I was curious about the simulated voice narration, The story was ok, the main characters interesting, but ugh, the robot just couldn’t capture the cadence of the language. I hope this author gets a chance with a real live narrator next time.

Mrs Pollifax continues to grow on me. These stories are fast-paced with a good deal of wry humor with some surprising twists thrown in. Some dated language (specifically the use adjectives describing POC) may offend, but IMO the strong female characters balance out those shortcomings. Very entertaining!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a series of “spy” novels written >50 years ago, but was pleasantly surprised. If you can forgive some outdated language and cultural stereotypes, you may also find the Mrs Pollifax books very entertaining. Elderly female protagonist solves problems and breaks the glass ceiling… not bad for 1960’s.

Cute story, but it was a little predictable. What I didn’t expect, though, was the explicit language. That doesn’t bother me, but it would be good to have a heads up- just in case you listen out loud in public, lol.

I loved this story, and was engrossed from the first chapter. Sure, I suppose it helps that I’m a horse lover and studied a bit of art history and am fascinated by history in general. The many characters and time jumps from the ante-bellum period to the present made perfect sense to me. I liked how the main (human) character Jarrett was used to reveal the little known fact that black men were sometimes noted horsemen, deserving of a place in history for their accomplishments. The parallels between the enslaved groom/trainer and “his” horse are presented both subtly and overtly. I think this is a wonderfully written story, and its only shortcoming imho is the oddly violent ending, which seemed clumsy and unnecessary to me.

This is an enjoyable, funny holiday story. The two narrators are excellent and the male and female voices sound authentic.

Comfortable like a well-worn sweatshirt, but the weird voices (and especially the phony-sounding drawl) of the male characters is starting to get to me.
