Author shuffled the timeline for dramatic reveals
Revisado: 01-31-23
We should have studied Nancy Wake in World History. Amazing woman! But since it is a novel based on reality, Ariel and her editors got a little too fancy and with the shuffled timeline it is confusing to listen to sometimes. So many exciting moments- don’t really think jumping around was necessary.
Reader does a great job though!

Great characters great mystery
Revisado: 12-23-22
Classic but not formulaic mystery- mistaken identities, etc. the only problem is that I liked the characters so much and the book ended.

Historia
In this coming of age story, Dodie Smith introduces the visionary and eccentric character of seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain. The youngest daughter in a family of impoverished artists, it is her imagination and writing that takes us away from the ramshackle old English castle where they live, and towards an intriguing tale of husband-hunting and light-hearted sibling rivalry.

A repeat read (listen)
Revisado: 11-16-22
Some books bear re-reading or listening. Most don’t, but this is one of the classics. Still has more to give each time. And as I first read it in my early twenties while now I am in my late 40’s, my perspective on the characters has shifted quite a lot so it is not just the main character on a path of self discovery but me as a reader, as well.

Historia
George Eliot's The Lifted Veil was first published in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in 1859 and has now become one of the author's most widely read and critically discussed stories. Told from the point of view of a young, egocentric, and morbid clairvoyant man, Latimer, it is a dark fantasy portrait of an artist whose visionary powers merely blight his life. The story reflected the scientific interest of the time in the physiology of the brain, mesmerism, phrenology, and experiments in revivification.

Creepy

Not my favorite Eliot but fun for Halloween? Like most horror, it leaves me unsatisfied as far as explanations or endings go.

Not Far Pavilions but fun!
Revisado: 10-12-22
MM Kaye was not as deft at writing mysteries as she was at historical romance- and she slips into that style sometimes when POV suddenly shifts. But the story was creepy and twisty and most important the characters were a mix of familiar and interesting. Reader was great!

Not the actress I would have cast to read
Revisado: 10-02-22
Loved this book for many years. I was 14 when I found it- my first taste of healthy feminism, The reader isn’t horrible but also not GREaT- she does not capture through voice emphasis the different characters and events. I have read this one aloud to multiple audiences over the years and know some phrases by heart and maybe that is why I feel this way.

Americans should not read British authors
Revisado: 08-12-22
The story was powerful enough to distract me most of the time from the reader- but as many said, she was sometimes distracting.
Love MM Kaye and the amount of research she always puts into her historical dramas though- and if you are like me and don’t get to sit and read as much as you like, then it is a gift to be able to have access to her works from even less ideal readers.

What a deal for one credit!
Revisado: 08-04-22
Haters gonna hate- this is in chronological order not published order, and the chapters aren’t marked very well. But you get all the books for one credit, read by some of the finest British actors of all time, and it is an epic.
I just feel grateful to have had the opportunity to revisit these books in such a convenient medium.
Some people complained about Derek Jacobi’s reading of the mouse hero - won’t try to spell it here without a reference- well, I thought it was spot on.
Bravo!

Revisado: 07-03-22
Love getting a whole series for one credit. This adventure fantasy was based on a unique idea about the magic of words. Had a sometimes predictable but sweet and clean romance, and enough political intrigue/ interesting juxtapositioning of characters to keep my attention. Love this reader’s accent and thoughtful pacing.
