I really thought that Allen’s and Parnes’ book “Shattered” could not be topped.
I was wrong.
This is a book for lay people who love, follow and want to understand politics. The 2024 elections were historical in America’s history, and Allen/Parnes do it justice from the first to the last page.
I gave the performance one star because something is wrong with the sound. While at times it is of high quality, as I have come to expect from Audible, most of the time it sounds tinny, distant, and reminds me of the days when Audible was this tiny company recording books on cassette tapes. Unacceptable. FIX IT.

While the first book about Jacob was hard to put down, this one is very hard to keep listening to. The narrator of the first book was simply amazing: a book with that many characters is hard to follow and a versatile narrator is key. This book’s narrator doesn’t even come close to the previous one.
But most importantly: the story. What is the purpose? Historical accuracy? A thrilling novel? It seems as if Schätzing cannot make up his mind. The endless details of how mercantile customs evolved, the endless details on internal politics of the church and the patricians, the English, French. All of it should have been shortened and greatly tightened up. Worst of all for me was the use of “modern” language. No way people, even educated ones, spoke like this in the 12th and 13th centuries!!! During some dialogues I could literally envision some of the participants scrolling on their smart phones. Very, very dissonant.
I hope he doesn’t plan a third one.

I love most of Schätzing’s books, but this one is particularly notable for its minuscule descriptions of every facial expression, weather occurrence or geographic location. The book could have been significantly shorter, were it not for these. Still, great fun and a very immersive experience. The crown achievement is the narrator. 20 + actors in one person. Magical

Amir Tibon is one of my favorite journalists at the HaAretz newspaper. When I learned that he wrote a book about his October 7 experience as a resident of kibbutz Nahal Oz I knew it was going to be fantastic. The story of his dad, former IDF general, coming to the rescue is now part of the historical canon in Israel.
The book has surpassed all my expectations.
Amir has a deep knowledge of the country’s history on the Jewish Arab conflict topic. Here, he masterfully weaves the minute-by minute account of living through 10.7 with logical blocks of time in history, explaining Israel’s politics around the conflict, with particular highlights on Gaza and Nir Oz.
I haven’t been able to “function”, since I started listening to the book, it is riveting. The narration transports the listener directly to the day and the scene of the disaster.
I haven read several excellent books on the history of the Middle East conflict, but Amir manages to summarize it in a way that makes sense, provides perspective and at the same time doesn’t cut corners, thus maintaining the impossible complexity of this seemingly unsolvable situation.
Moreover, Amir succeeds in painting the picture of Netanyahu, in all his monstrous, megalomaniacal, increasingly psychopathic obsession to maintain power at all costs, while also describing the man’s transformation from a shrewd, narcissistic politician to a dangerous, obsessed man who will sell everything and everyone in order to achieve his personal interests above absolutely everything.

I love British accents but unless you are very well versed in them, stay away from this book. The reader ist ABSOLUTELY godawful. I would have loved to get through the whole book but it’s absolutely impossible to understand him.

I had never heard of MM until she became PH’s girlfriend. I was thrilled, and tried to find out more about her. Looked up Suits but couldn’t make it further than 3 episodes, because the series was so terrible. She was a C+ /B- actress at best. Once I started watching her in interviews and appearances, I was struck by her phoniness and obvious psychological pathologies which were so blatantly evident that it was comical.
The rest is history. I am definitely no admirer of her or him.
Looking for some light, entertaining reading I came across this book. Had heard of Lady C but I had never read any of her books.
The only serious account about the sad and sorry story of these two has been written by Tom Bower. Based on this book “Revenge”, Lady C obviously has many of the facts right.
But, my goodness, it is very hard to take her seriously when she outs herself as a Boris Johnson and Trump admirer, while loathing Blair and surely loathing the Obamas, against whom she doesn’t dare to opine for the obvious reason.
Lady C very much undermines the credibility of her account about these two, by outing her political opinions which are completely misplaced and inappropriate in this book.
It was, however, just the mindless kind of entertainment I needed at the moment.

As an ED MD who was in medical school during the eighties, I am very familiar with AIDS and HIV. I didn’t think that the podcast would teach me anything new. And while the majority of the info was already known to me, I ended up binge-listening because the presentation and narrative are absolutely masterful and spellbinding.
The best of the best.

An absolute must read for every American and for every civics student. It is time that American history be taught and told with the actual facts in mind.
Given that it is a trove of useful information, I have also purchased a printed copy for annotations.
I have read dozens of exceptional American history books over the last few years and this one is in the top five.

As so many atrocities and crimes are being committed by trump and his regime, the government sanctioned separation of children from their parents at the Mexican border ranks as the highest crime against humanity.
Soboroff has established himself early on as a hands on stealthy journalist who pursued this topic fearlessly.
This book is absolutely required reading, especially to those who want to understand similar and worse atrocities against human beings committed throughout history by government decree.
Ultimately, we will have to come to terms with the facts, and that this could happen here in the United States. Soboroff is a key narrator of this current history that will continue to unfold far into the future. I hope he will write a follow up book.

I don’t usually read autobiographies written by celebrities. Not my genre. And her topic-getting sober-is also not of interest to me in general.
But during the pandemic hiatus of the CBS show “Mom” I was really missing the cast and especially Kristen Johnston, whom I like a lot.
When I saw that she is the reader of her own book, it sealed the deal: she could read the phone book and I would listen!
I never in a MILLION years expected this: a superbly told story, performed in a one-woman-show, so exquisitely narrated and spoken, it sounds like theatre. I had no idea Kristen could write like this. And while I adore her comedic style, I never knew she could actually be tragic, riveting, spell binding and heartbreaking.
I sincerely hope she is writing another book.
