The voice was tough to get past
Revisado: 04-13-25
Pretty good story overall. My biggest problem was the narrator’s voice. He sounded like Dragnet’s Sergeant Friday … whose voice never had a lot of tenderness … Remember “Just the facts Ma’am?” So I found it hard to warm up to Mark, the main character, especially when he spoke tenderly to Shari, the other main character. Instead it made me cringe - LOL. Aside from that, the narrator did a good job.
One other stupid little point … Mark said “trust me…” many times during the story. Personally, as a woman, I have never trusted a man who said “trust me.” Just saying …
Otherwise I enjoyed the story.

Historia
While her humanitarian husband Liam has been digging wells in Africa, Mara Jacobs has been struggling. She knows she's supposed to feel a warm glow that her husband is nine time zones away, caring for widows and orphans. But the reality is that she is exhausted. Then Liam's three-year absence turns into something more, changing everything and plunging her into a sunless grief. As Mara struggles to find her footing, she discovers that even when hope is tenuous, faith is fragile, and the future is unknown, we can be sure we are not forgotten...or unloved.

When will this story get going?
Revisado: 03-27-24
I found the main character very self absorbed … unable to find any reason why her husband Liam would have married this woman. The dialog between Mara’s best friend and her was trivial- uninteresting - I kept waiting for a break in the sadness, but the story just trudged along. I hoped there would be a stronger Godly message that would break through the bleakness, but there were only hints of that throughout. I’m not sure why I listened to the whole book except I was hoping for more.

Incredibly insightful
Revisado: 02-21-24
Thank you Kristen Hannah, for writing this book. What an amazing story told with a deep insight into what the women in Vietnam endured during and after the war. My personal experience as a nurse pales in comparison to the picture you skillfully paint of these courageous women. I feel I have a much better understanding now for why many vets won’t speak of their experience, and why it is so rare to hear it from a woman’s perspective.
As a Christian, I was hoping for Frankie to finally find her peace with God, but on hindsight I realize you were focusing on sticking to the story that needed to be told.
All in all this book is one I will recommend to many people. Thank you so much for telling it so profoundly.
Incidentally, the narrator did a fantastic job telling the story as if I were right there.

Great story, but not a fan of virtual
Revisado: 01-29-24
The story was wonderful. Very creative and it kept me on the edge of my seat. However that virtual voice was not good at all. The voice didn’t change from one character to the next so I had trouble following who was doing the talking. It made it confusing following the dialogue and consequently the storyline was confusing too. I would love this book with a real person narrating.
