What was most disappointing about Rob Reid’s story?

The premise of the story starts out interested, and takes some exciting turns towards high tech threats on human survival - driven through "Super AI". But when the Super AI materializes as a whining angst ridden millennial, that's where the story just becomes painful. This was a difficult audiobook to finish.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

There were many performers, which was pretty neat. Some of them did a great job, and one "whiny millennials" did a good job with their performance too, though I wanted to rip my ears out after a while...

Since we are in an election, wanted to read this to get all of the latest dirt on Hillary before we vote. Spoiler alert - this book contains nothing new. I can summarize it entirely as follows: Bill was a horn dog, and was having affairs. Lied about them. Recall Ken Start report for details - nothing new in this book. Hillary was bitchy to the WH staff - fought with Bill some. I already assumed that, but author confirms it.

That's it. In an afterword, author rehashes Email Scandal, and Benghazi. He had no first hand knowledge of either, but had apparently watched Hannity, and had an axe to grind.

I have sympathy for the author because his job was put in jeopardy during the Starr hearing backlash - and that sucks. But, though he acknowledged in the book that he didn't want to go public with the story, he was forced to do so only during the investigation - but is clearly happy to profit from it now, now that he can release this rehash right before the election.

I spent my $30 on the book - and there, saved you from having to do the same.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Hearing all of the stories of the 80's hackers -- I actually had met several of the guys, and had friends in the industry, and it was a crazy time. I was disappointed that the "25th anniversary update" didn't do more to cover in the more recent history, other than brief afterwords that elude to the more recent use of the hacker ethic.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I love Bosch books, and when he gets his hooks into a case, he gets his hooks into me -- can't put it down! This one definitely is different than the others, but it's still all Bosch!

Story is pretty good, but Simon Vance is reading

What about Simon Vance’s performance did you like?

Great -- I've loved his readings of the "Girl / Tattoo" series, and he does an amazing job here as well. Most notably, several of the characters "change their names" in this reading from the earlier books, as he pronounces the English names differently than his predecessor.

What did you like best about The Ice Princess? What did you like least?

It takes a while to get rolling, and in the first half, there is so much development set up on establishing the flaws of the characters that it's not quite clear who I'm supposed to care about. However, the insightful duo does eventually emerge - and the story starts to fall again.

After finishing the Sean Duffy series, I had no idea how they would take this one different direction. Similar in many ways, especially with the North Ireland influence, this is a better book than any of the predecessors. More disturbing, more gritty, and more captivating.

Amazing.

What did you love best about In the Morning I'll Be Gone?

The characters are amazing -- the hero is humble, and under assuming, the jerks are nasty, the politics is thick, and the setting -- Northern Ireland in the 1984 -- is hugely compelling.

What did you like best about this story?

Love how you get the feel of real Irish life from the fictional Catholic Peeler working on the fringes of Northern Ireland. But mixed in with real-life events that make it seem like this all really happened.

Have you listened to any of Gerard Doyle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

As good as book 1 -- great read. Never wanted to put it down.

If you could sum up I Hear the Sirens in the Street in three words, what would they be?

Amazing perspective looking into Northern Ireland in the 80's. Get the grunge feel of a young inspector in a small town, as he does his murder investigation -- which, as always, is more than in seems. Complex stories, lots of layers, interesting characters.

What did you like best about this story?

I love how they drop little pop culture references into the story continually, usually things like the tape he happens to put into his car player, or the real life political events that were going on at the time.

Which character – as performed by Gerard Doyle – was your favorite?

Sean Duffy rocks.

Any additional comments?

Sadly, while the story was very interesting, there were specific sub-plots that just were cleaned up too neatly, and felt contrived. Didn't feel that way in the other books.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I knew little about the IRA conflict, struggles when I acquired this audiobook, but the characters of this little town, drag us through the conflict from their own murder investigation -- and you realize that not only is the book an amazing investigative story, but it's also a history lesson.... bravo.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"And I fixed myself a vodka gimlet".
