A Catholic cop tracks an IRA master bomber amidst the sectarian violence of the conflict in Northern Ireland

It's the early 1980s in Belfast. Sean Duffy, a conflicted Catholic cop in the Protestant RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary), is recruited by MI5 to hunt down Dermot McCann, an IRA master bomber who has made a daring escape from the notorious Maze prison. In the course of his investigations Sean discovers a woman who may hold the key to Dermot's whereabouts; she herself wants justice for her daughter who died in mysterious circumstances in a pub locked from the inside. Sean knows that if he can crack the "locked-room mystery", the bigger mystery of Dermot's whereabouts might be revealed to him as a reward. Meanwhile the clock is ticking down to the Conservative Party conference in Brighton in 1984, where Mrs. Thatcher is due to give a keynote speech.

What did you love best about In the Morning I'll Be Gone?

I'm not a fan of detective novels, but when McKinty creates a good cop that's pissed off and backed into a corner I'm coming along for the ride. This novel was everything I had hoped it would be, gritty, action-packed and full of nasty surprises.

What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Morning I'll Be Gone?

No spoilers from me. A good cop, feed up with a gangster attitude. He’s willing and able to give bottom feeders their own medicine. The plot rockets along at a frantic pace, I just couldn’t get enough. The trilogy was simply brilliant with a gripping ending that left me stunned. What a gift, thank you Mr. McKinty.

What about Gerard Doyle’s performance did you like?

Gerard Doyle brought every character to life, putting on an amazing performance that felt like theater and not an audio book.

Any additional comments?

Irish crime fiction at its best.

BOOK OF THE YEAR!!!

This is the third book in the Sean Duffy series. While I was unsure of the series after reading the first book, I am now thoroughly addicted. The style and pacing took some getting used to but I am glad I hung in there because all three books have been thoroughly enjoyable.

This author excels at developing and describing a setting that is a character in itself. Prior to reading these books I did not know much about "The Troubles" in northern Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s. These books have inspired me to learn more so I could have a better understanding of the events that were unfolding in the story. That being said, you don't need to have any prior knowledge of this time in history to enjoy these books.

The narration is excellent. I would recommend these books to anyone who enjoys original and compelling crime novels.

Another great addition to the series

How do you solve the mysterious death, when the body is found in a locked and bolted room (from the inside). Sean Duffy tries to find the answer in order to bring him closer to an IRA bomber that has escaped from prison. As usual, the novel is loaded with unique characters, read with perfection by Gerard Doyle. Sean has his problems with being accused of a crime he did not commit, then finds himself going down memory lane when his newest assignment is to find an old acquaintance intent on killing the Prime Minister.

I have become addicted to Sean Duffy - his world-view is cynical, but he keeps his humanity in the face of the world's evil. His character never becomes boring. This was the best in the series so far.

Excellent

Well, I mean that as far as McKinty is concerned. Detective Duffy is a delight. Earthy, narly, erudite, charming, pot-smoking, whiskey drinking, Rock audiophile, with the right existential questions for any age. And, perhaps most significantly Gerard Doyle as narrator is thoroughly perfect. The mystery within the mystery in this one is an illuminating stab at the genre. Great team: McKinty -Doyle, wot?

I hope the “Troubles” go on forever.

I love the Detective Duffy series and the narrator is wonderful. Great crimes that are the background to the strife of the times in the late 80’s inIreland. If you live great characters, storyline and history all mixed in this is the series for you.

Great series

What a great read! It’s not enough to describe this book as a detective mystery set in Ireland. You get a deep sense of the time and place with authentic, complex characters and a non- judgemental portrayal of history and politics. The main character understands that he is flawed, but driven by a deep sense of justice and an understanding that true justice is not always lawful and that sometimes compromise is expedient. The narration is excellent and accents sound authentic to my non-Irish ears. Left me hungering after the next book in the series.

Authentic, engrossing, satisfying !
