Historia
Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is Chicago's only openly practicing wizard. He is also dead broke. His vast knowledge and magical skills are unfortunately matched by his talent for making powerful enemies and alienating friends. He wants to redeem himself in Murphy's eyes and make enough money to quiet his rumbling stomach.

Juvenile story line; attempt at wizardry insubstantial and foolish. Much better examples: Ben Abramowitz.

The story was just unnecessarily gruesome and did not transport the listener to a new place.

Historia
A small child when he comes to England on a Kindertransport in the summer of 1939, Jacques Austerlitz is told nothing of his real family by the Welsh Methodist minister and his wife who raise him. When he is a much older man, fleeting memories return to him, and obeying an instinct he only dimly understands, Austerlitz follows their trail back to the world he left behind a half century before. There, faced with the void at the heart of twentieth-century Europe, he struggles to rescue his heritage from oblivion.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

The extensive detailed recitation of the facts at the start of war; which could have but never did became tedious.

Excellent narration from a reader with an interesting subtle voice. An excellent book for those with either extensive or little knowledge of Lincoln’s election and the start of the war.

Gruesome child abuse
Revisado: 06-15-22
The story depicts sadistic cruel treatment to inmates at a juvenile prison in graphic terms. The legal aspect is secondary and not up to Dugoni’s usual thriller. It’s slow and drags out the unlikely ending. I can’t believe I listened to almost all of this book.

Historia
Philip Roth presents a vivid portrait of an innocent man being swept away by a current of conflict and violence in his own backyard - a story that is as much about loving America as it is hating it. Seymour "Swede" Levov, a legendary high school athlete, a devoted family man, a hard worker, and the prosperous heir of his father's Newark glove factory comes of age in thriving, triumphant postwar America. But everything he loves is lost when the country begins to run amok in the turbulent 1960s. Not even a most private, well-intentioned citizen, it seems, gets to sidestep the sweep of history. American Pastoral is the story of a fortunate American's rise and fall ... a strong, confident man, a master of social equilibrium, overwhelmed by the forces of social disorder. For the Swede is not allowed to stay forever blissful living out life in rural Old Rimrock in his 170 year-old stone farmhouse with his pretty wife (his college sweetheart and Miss New Jersey of 1949) and his lively albeit precocious daughter, the apple of his eye ... that is until she grows up to become a revolutionary terrorist.

He renders Meredith's lines just as she would have spoken them.

Historia
It begins with a dead body at the far end of Baker Street tube station, all that remains of American exchange student James Gallagher - and the victim's wealthy, politically powerful family is understandably eager to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder. The trouble is, the bottom - if it exists at all - is deeper and more unnatural than anyone suspects...except, that is, for London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant.

Historia
The stories in This Is How You Lose Her, by turns hilarious and devastating, raucous and tender, lay bare the infinite longing and inevitable weaknesses of our all-too-human hearts. They capture the heat of new passion, the recklessness with which we betray what we most treasure, and the torture we go through - "the begging, the crawling over glass, the crying" - to try to mend what we've broken beyond repair. They recall the echoes that intimacy leaves behind, even where we thought we did not care.

Very very short stories
Revisado: 11-05-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The author reads well and is interesting to listen to. As an author he should stick to a male point of view. There is some fairly graphic descriptions of sexual activity which are totally appropriate to the stories.
Would you recommend This Is How You Lose Her to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, for a short listn
What about Junot Díaz’s performance did you like?
I loved his natural accent and it was easy to distinguish the variou characters.
Was This Is How You Lose Her worth the listening time?
Yes.
