Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Book was wonderful as was the narration. The story alternates between occupied Poland and present day America. Being Polish, it was exceptionally memorable for me. An interesting but painful slice of history.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

BEST book I've read/listened to in a long time!
Revisado: 07-12-22
I can't even begin to express how much I was captivated by this book! Such a simple story, but so many deep, thought provoking moments. My emotions were all over the place and I quite literally gasped a couple times! This book had the feel of being non-fiction, and I had to remind myself a few times that it wasn't a true story. I listened to this as an audible, which was narrated by the author. He did a stellar job. Don't wait, let this be your next read or listen and I promise, you won't regret it.

(Possible spoiler alert)
Not only did I find the storyline weak and juvenile, I also found the narrator lacking. Just as one example, when the girl was in the hospital and Jo was dealing w the social worker, her lines were immature, as was the delivery, which came across as whining. IMHO, this one was a waste of time.

Historia
It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid.

I enjoyed this story, nothing enthralling, but very engaging. I wasn't a big fan of the narration. She read fine while narrating the story, but when she used voices for the women, she used a too soft, childlike voice. I found it off putting.

I struggled with this several times, and put on back burner each time because I just wasn't hooked, possibly also put off by narrator. I finally made it through the 1st 20 minutes, was eventually reeled in, and held on tight for the entire ride! Lots of interesting surprises culminating in a shocker ending!

I love this author, she always makes me smile, laugh, cry, hope and believe...and this book delivered on all counts! It was a fun story, I loved reading about this strong woman, with a great sense of humor, who could always dish it back to her firefighter brothers in spades.Of course, the love interest is always a perk. This narrator is always, always excellent! Worth your money or your credit. Happy Reading!

Weak and somewhat corny storyline
Revisado: 12-10-19
I wa disappointed in how this turns out. I thought it was somewhat promising in the beginning but as the story progressed, some of the lines were just downright corny, and the plot line was pretty weak. The narrator at times was good, but other times, her inflections (and the lines) were just silly, so I would say her overall performance was weak.
