But when she was asked to testify in court against his abusive mother, Cherry never got the chance. She couldn't lie if her life depended on it - and it did. Attractive, manipulative, and violent, mother of four Kim Cargill had a wealth of dirty secrets she'd do anything to keep hidden.

Boring, Repetitive Telling of a Horrific Case
Revisado: 02-10-25
Too long and drawn out, there are frequent repetition of various details as if the author was trying to meet a higher word count. I typically enjoy Phelps’ books but this one really dragged. As most others have said, the narrator’s voice inflections changing during direct quotes was highly annoying and almost unbearable, but other than that one thing I really enjoyed this narrator. Overall an average book.

Slow, Repetitive & Boring
Revisado: 01-27-25
Being a true-crime addict I had heard of this case, had listened to podcasts and had watched crime news shows about it, so I was very familiar with the story and looked forward to listening to this book. I found it disappointing, as it was unnecessarily long, with characters’ back-stories going waaaaay too far back (especially secondary characters of less importance), which added nothing to the telling of the story and just gave a bunch of irrelevant details. Even though I knew the story, I think it was a mistake on the part of the author when he gave the outcome of the case right off the rip in the beginning. It was more than foreshadowing, it was like telling the story backwards and jumped too much back and forth between present and past.

Historia
Best friends Daryl Barber and James Boucher were responsible, and their parents trusted them to spend Spring Break at Daytona Beach unchaperoned. When the boys missed their agreed-upon daily check-ins, their parents were disappointed. When they failed to come home on their planned return date, their parents were terrified. They could not have known that their innocent sons would encounter two violent men on the Florida coast. They could not have imagined the torture their children would endure before their bodies turned up four months later in a Florida swamp.

Great Book About Tragic Murders
Revisado: 01-27-25
I loved this book, despite the tragic content. I found it to be suspenseful and thorough but not repetitive. Normally I get irritated at narrators that try to change their voices for the characters (especially female narrators trying to sound like men, as was the case with this narrator), but this book was so engaging that I didn't even care lol. I really hate that the real investigator was never recognized for his hard work, and that the investigator that was hired by the family (that didn't do any of the actual investigating) took such a large percentage of the fees for doing literally nothing. What a disgusting thing to do to the families. This story is just a tragedy all around.

Below Average for the Genre
Revisado: 01-17-25
I listened to 48 true crime books on Audible last year so I have many books to compare this one to, making me wish that a different true crime author had written the book about this case. The writing is all over the place chronologically. It continually jumps from before the murder to after the murder to before the murder, which is very confusing and highly annoying. Additionally it felt like the inclusion of the teens’ never ending tweets, social media posts and hashtags were added to extend the length of the book, like a student trying to meet the word count of a writing assignment. This is a very poorly written book in my opinion. Many times I didn’t want to finish listening, but I hated to waste a credit so I finished it.

Historia
In 2019, veteran journalist Mark Seal began investigating the suspicious death of music mogul Peter Ikin. Just 32 days before he was found dead in his Paris hotel room, Ikin had married a handsome, debonair Frenchman named Alexandre, who would claim to be entitled to his late husband’s fortune. As Seal dug into the case, he had no idea that tracing the incredible life of Alexandre Despallieres would take him from Paris to London to Beverly Hills, and unspool a web of intricate plots and deceptions.

Disappointing
Revisado: 12-18-24
I had really high hopes for this book after reading the description. It sounded like such a great story but for some reason it bored me to the point that I wouldn’t have finished it if it hadn’t been such a short read. I can’t even put my finger on what exactly I found to be so bad, possibly the format it was written in. The actual truth of the story is very interesting but the book is not. I did enjoy this narrator though, he has a very pleasant voice and doesn’t try to do things that can be annoying, such as trying to do the female characters’ voices or fake foreign accents.

Historia
Mike and Denise Williams had a tight knit, seemingly unbreakable bond with childhood friends, Brian and Kathy Winchester. The two couples were devout, hardworking Baptists who lived perfect, quintessentially Southern lives. Their friendship seemed ironclad. That is, until December 16, 2000, when Denise’s husband Mike disappeared while duck hunting on Lake Seminole. After no body was found, everyone assumed that Mike had drowned in a tragic accident, his body eaten by alligators. But things took an unexpected turn when Brian Winchester divorced his wife and married Denise.

Interesting Story
Revisado: 08-22-24
I had listened to a podcast about this murder and found it interesting, particularly the amount of time that passed between the murder and the time the killers were caught. I decided to listen to the audiobook written about the case and found it interesting as well. However I don’t think it was written in such a way that if I had read it in a paper version that it would have held my interest. The writing was a little dry and it revealed early on who the killers were. I also didn’t really care for the narrator. He has a nice voice and he articulated well, but his delivery was very “sing-song,” meaning he constantly went up and down, reminiscent of a voice actor in a commercial. It was too dramatic and sounded as if he was trying to sell you a high-end product instead of reading a book.

Very Detailed Account
Revisado: 03-06-24
This is a great book that covered a case I don’t even remember hearing about. I am the same age Amy would have been now, but as a mother and grandmother my heart goes out to Amy’s mom and all she experienced and endured during her lifelong search for her daughter. The book details many harrowing encounters with the outlaw biker world and made me ask myself if I would be brave enough to do all she did. It’s heartbreaking that she never got the answers she so desperately searched for. I really enjoyed the automated narration too, I can’t stand when audio book narrators try to change their voices for each character, as if they’re acting in a movie or something. Just read the book. I highly recommend this book if true crime is your genre.

Couldn't Finish It
Revisado: 01-29-24
Disclaimer: I'm writing this after finishing about 25% of the book. If I'm ever able to finish it and like it any better I'll come back and edit my review, but as of now this is it. The unnecessary details about minor characters make this an unbearable listen. For instance the Sheriff in the story had his whole career outlined, with all his older cases before this one explained ad nauseam. I don't care how his career progressed or how he never planned to go into law enforcement. I don't care how fit he is. (Both subjects that were discussed at great length.) Get to the story that is the subject of THIS book!!! Several times I looked at the book description to see if I'd misunderstood it and it was actually a compilation of many cases, instead of a book about one particularly gruesome case. After 3 hours I decided I couldn't bear another 8 1/2.

Interesting Story/Repetitive Book/Annoying Narrato
Revisado: 01-29-24
This true crime story has interested me since it happened, so when I started on Audible it was one of the first books I listened to. The story itself is interesting and well-written, with the exception of the unbelievably high repetition rate of case facts. Certain facts were repeated so often that I frequently would look down at my car stereo and wonder if I'd accidentally rewound the audio. I bet we heard about going to the store for green juice a dozen times. The repetition added way too much to the length; I'd say 1/3-1/2 of it could have been taken out. Also, I almost quit the book many many times because of how annoying the narrator is. She seemed to think she was auditioning for a voiceover part or a Lifetime movie. She switched back and forth between speaking loudly and trying to make her voice deeper when reading a statement made by a male character, then immediately switch to a softer, sugary sweet voice when reading a woman's statement. She even attempted a foreign accent for one of the female characters in the courtroom part. She didn't keep her voice volume consistent, moving from louder to softer, and back. It just sounded silly and added nothing. She also didn't take the time to be sure she knew how to pronounce some of the legal words, such as appellate. I kept screaming at the car speaker, "Just read the book, you're not an actor!!!!" Overall the book is too repetitive but good; the narrator makes it an almost unbearable listen. I definitely won't listen to anything else she narrates. If you're interested in the story I recommend reading the actual book, not listening to the audio.
