Weber Let Me Down ... Again

I've bought all of the books in the Honor Harrington series. At least the last half dozen times I've been disappointed by the bloat. There is plenty of it here. Worse, he has recycled scenes from past novels. How many times do we have to read about Pavel Young's cowardice, the court martial, etc? I've given up early on Toll. But, since I cannot return, it I expect I'll try to finish it sometime and discover if there is anything new said about HH.

Pretty Good at first. Spoiler alert

First two thirds slowly ratcheted up humiliation. Then it descends into taboo sex, incest, sex before a crowd, dubious consent to losing one's virginity, y mas. If those are your kinks, sobeit. Not mine.

Predictable

A reviewer claims this book is similar to Heìnlein's juvenile. Perhaps in that their is a lot of ideological pontificating. The plot is rather mundane, with some fun details about life aboard ship but not as much world building as could be hoped for. What I would not expect in a Heinlein is two 14 year olds making love, even if written with tenderness and fumbling.

Show don't tell

As a male reader of a romance of a woman with agency and a ___(fill in name for male type here) ____ it is the heroine's character, actions an peril I look for. For the guy who starts as an ... enemy, vilian, brother, friend or second chance ... I like to find something redeeming in the male MC. Something I might like to find in me.
We are repeatedly told Jadam is a good king. Told, not shown. Told, again. Neither as a king nor as a man is there anything this guy likes about Jadam. He may be beautiful, ah handsome, but he jumps to conclusions to the finish. No woman is going to be able to improve his behavior. IMHO.

PS. I did like the book enough to listen to it a second time years after the first.

Coming of age excellence

Solid world building and a teen who has taken on at her own initiative (and agency) the quest of protecting her baby sister.
She suffers, as do all heroines and heros of such stories, from adults who classify her by age. Miriam makes mistakes and finds the right approach to problems that jaded adult eyes and ears cannot see or hear.
This old male delighted in the story and hopesp to read more about Miriam and her quest

Massive cliffhanger.

Too much teenage angst.

Surprisingly little world building for a coming of age, young love between royalty story, built on the MCs being from two worlds that have been separated totally for a thousand years.

Whenever either MC is in peril they are saved by sudden use of technology or magic, and not by application of creativity, intelligence or even physical ability.

Did I mention massive cliffhanger?

Great audiobook I've enjoyed twice now. Viola, (age 8 when the tale begins), who becomes "7," and who then becomes [I'm not telling] has a lot of agency combines with almost paralyzing self-doubt aka fear.
This coming of age tale of a young thief in training has more travails than any of Fagan's (think Dickens) youngsters must overcome. Lots of perils.
Well plotted and certainly good world building in that portion of the novel that focuses on the thieves' beyond-expansive den.

The is a stellar example of Molly Harper's ability to craft a paranormal romance with just the right among of fun, angst and main characters who are not "too" anything. Too Alpha, curvaceous, obsessive, angsty or preposterous.
Plenty of agency, but in normal paranormal amounts, not in 'solves things instantly with the wave if a sword or wile' speed.
And filled with Harper-signature word play.

A Lifetime of Learning

A novel novella, this series follows a couple from before they married through many year of a spanking DD marriage. By the time the couple arrives at this story, and the lastest revision of their written spanking contract, they have children many years later. [I have not read most of the many books in the series and cannot afford to listen to them all!]

HFN. No cliffhanger. Discipline that includes a type of penetration that mixes pain with arousal, even when not done as a consequence for totally unsafe to herself and her kids bad behaviors.
