good quality, artificial narration was the best feature of this so-called book. There is a short blog post worth of content tortured into a book.

Snyder convincingly argues that we are in a moment eerily similar to that of 1920s-30s that saw the emergence of totalitarianism in Germany and USSR. Except now it is also the US that is on the brink of tyranny. The suggestions for resisting that danger are concise, yet manage to make a strong case by showing historical comparisons and relying on solid reasoning. Without heeding Snyder’s lessons, the 2024 election will likely be the last free one in a long while.

Ted Chiang is master of thought-provoking, emotionally-impactful stories. What stands out in this narration, however, are also brilliant narrations by equally devoted voice actors. It’s particularly neat to have Chiang offer some of his authorial thoughts after each story. This is one of the audiobooks that adds significant extra value even if you have already read the printed version.

As the afterword makes clear, Mills’s work is as useful today as it was in 1959. It is a testimony to his commitment to public scholarship that the work is largely devoid of sociological jargon, and works very well as an audiobook, especially given Brandt’s excellent narration.

To be frank, I did not think very highly of the first or second volumes. They were certainly imaginative in terms of physics and technology, but the very rigid view of technological progress was so hackneyed. The way this last book ended, however, made me a convert.

Ian Johnson’s translation is both accessible and poetic, and the actors were very good. Hayley Atwell playing Antigone was especially superb.

As far as I understand, this is the first edition (1798) of the Essay, which Malthus later expanded and made more nuanced, but that makes this version all the more readable. Annette Grayson's narration, rich with intonation and conviction, was also instrumental to make this very easy to follow as an audio book. I tried Gareth Armstrong's narration from Audible Studios, I just could not comfortably listen despite Armstrong's seeming proficiency as a narrator; it was just too stilted.

I'm very happy that Arendt's last work is available as an audiobook. It gave me a chance to "prelisten" to the book as a whole before focusing on particular places with a print version. Laural Merlington does an excellent job overall, and just has some trouble with pronunciation of German and Latin. It would be a tall order, I think, to expect her to read fluently not only English and French, but also German, Latin, and Ancient Greek that come up throughout the book.

I'm so glad Jin Yong's works are now starting to be available in English translation and on Audible! The translation reads very well, and the narrator is excellent. It's doubly great that they selected a narrator who could pronounce the Chinese names correctly.

Guidall's narration is phenomenal. I can hardly believe one person can so wonderfully voice both Don Quixote and Sancho Panza!
