Historia
Philippa Gregory's first story in the best-selling Wideacre trilogy. A compelling tale of passion and intrigue set in the 18th century. From the author of The Other Boleyn Girl and The Virgin's Lover. Wideacre Hall, set in the heart of the English countryside, is the ancestral home that Beatrice Lacey loves. But as a woman of the 18th century, she has no right of inheritance. Corrupted by a world that mistreats women, she sets out to corrupt others.

revolting main character
Revisado: 12-18-21
this novel should have remained at the bottom of her trunk and never published. the main character is completely revolting, a total sociopath. (SPOILER) murder, base treachery, murder, incest, murder... I have thoroughly enjoyed many of Ms. Gregory's other novels and had hoped this would redeem itself at some point but after four hours I just couldn't anymore. unless you have a taste for the most vile of behaviors, skip this one.

Historia
Some call him friend or boss. Some call him husband or dad. Some call him son, even a favorite son. But the only title that matters to him is the one the media has given him: the Poet. A name he earned from the written words he leaves behind after he kills that are as dark and mysterious as the reason he chooses his victims. One word, two, three, a story in a poem, a secret that only Detective Samantha Jazz can solve. Because, he’s writing this story for her.

stilted narration and overblown dialogue
Revisado: 10-03-21
ouch. I think the narrator was going for hard-bitten female detective with her tone and pacing, sadly, that's not how I heard it. stilted and uptight is my description. the male narrator came across better as the arrogant protagonist. I couldn't finish, too much hyperbole and bizarre phrasing. when I get to the point that I am almost constantly critiquing an author, it's time to let it go.

Historia
As a doctor, I walk a dangerously delicate balance of being compassionate but not overly invested. The same is true in my personal life - love is a luxury I can’t afford. It isn’t until Dr. Westin Grant breaks down all my walls and offers me a future, I find myself wondering if I’m brave enough to risk my heart. When who I was and who I’ve tried to become collide during my clinical trial, the fate of one patient changes everything.

Cancer, reproductive issues, idiot main character
Revisado: 08-11-21
I listened to 2 hours, if that, and had to stop. the plot revolves around a drug trial for women who have reproductive cancers. as a result it is ALL ABOUT the complex emotional issues involved with having children, conceiving or not conceiving, and whether life is worth living if you cannot bear your won kids. this is not my cup of tea at all. the doctor at the center 1) cannot get over a college love she walked away from, and 2) is whiny and insecure about it, although she gives herself 'you are a badass' pep talks constantly. early on she makes a decision that is completely implausible, if we are to believe she is this badass cancer doc. so, that was the end for me. I can't tolerate stylings that make me want to bang my head against a wall.

Historia
Every object has a ghost. There is a small yellow backpack - half unzipped, mouth yawning to the pavement, contents strewn around it (a banana, an exercise book, a pair of scissors) - abandoned on a suburban footpath. Ten feet away, the rubber stamp of tyres, resisting clamped brakes, mount the curb and cut across the path. The tracks come to an end at a crippled stop sign. The street, a tree-lined suburban road dappled in late-afternoon sunlight, is calm. But anyone walking past can feel the ghosts: the prickle on the back of their necks that tells them something happened here.

plausible short story
Revisado: 08-11-21
I enjoyed this short story. it was plausible for the most part, the narrator was good, and the plot was pretty well thought out. the daughter was a dingbat, would be my main criticism. she should have been aged 7 with her cognitive level. I'd read another by this author.

Historia
Two years ago, Dr. Gina Brady broke Thomas Prescott’s heart, but now her panic-stricken satellite phone call starts it beating again with a fury. Thugs kidnapped the good doctor from the remote jungle village where she was working, and now the retired homicide detective’s expert skills are desperately needed to save her. Led by a colorful, but perhaps untrustworthy local guide, Prescott journeys deep into the Bolivian Amazon, plunging into a world where the only thing more dangerous than the gun-toting drug traffickers and the ruthless tribesmen, is the jungle itself.

I'm a fan of this author. this story was fun, plausible, the narrator was good, nailed the assorted dialogs and accented of a multicultural cast. highly recommend.

Historia
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

ugh on the one thing. hate it. but it furthered the plot and resulted in the addition of that fucking flowers, and the story is better for it. I hope he never, ever stops writing these.

I thoroughly enjoy these Livia lone books. yeah, they are a bit improbably, but they are nothing if not entertaining. the cast of characters in this one is greatly expanded, and it is more enjoyable for it.

Historia
Shelby works as a dog walker in northern California, and she’s just finished up her bi-weekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner - Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company - lying on the bathroom floor, dead. A detective arrives on the scene. As she interviews Shelby, the body is inspected by a medical examiner, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.

irritating at moments, but worth the lead up
Revisado: 07-27-21
how often, when reading/listening to a book, do you think/say 'no no NO don't do that!' there are several situations in this story where the main character does the dumb thing and I'll admit I was tempted to stop a couple of times. but. the story managed to keep it's hook in me and the end was worth it.

Three minutes to eat. Five minutes to watch TV. And in that 3600 seconds you have awake, imagine that you have to figure out...Who murdered the woman across the street?

thoroughly enjoyed these. the story jumps the shark a couple times, but still thoroughly enjoyable, and a unique perspective. the episode set in Alaska is the only one I didn't care for, mainly because it was unremittingly dark. very much looking forward to the next one. humorous, cantankerous and endearing characters.
