Historia
The British win the American Revolutionary War, and a desperate Washington and the American founders must make a last stand in an enclave called Liberty. In 1781, George Washington's attempt to trap the British under Cornwallis at Yorktown ends catastrophically when the French fleet is destroyed in the Battle of the Capes. The revolution collapses, and the British begin a bloody reign of terror. A group of rebels flees westward and sets up a colony near what is now Chicago. They call it Liberty.

ok story i guess.
Revisado: 12-04-24
first if I had realized who was reading the story. I'd have never downloaded the book. Bronson frequently has the male protagonist sound like a whiny wimpy subservient man. which would be fine if the character wasn't a strong decisive leader.
second the story could have been good great even. if it was a different setting but reimaging the revolution was dumb. nor did I care for his portrayal of some of the funding fathers. they deserve better.
the story moved along at a good pace and was an interesting story. like I said I could have really enjoyed the story. had it been in a different setting and a different narrator

survivors who shouldn't have survived
Revisado: 11-22-24
the protagonists of this story make every mistake and bad decision possible. in the world the story is set. Any mistake could be fatal. Yet somehow the adults in the story can't seem to do a damn thing right but they usually survive. the only one who should have survived is the eldest son.
the thing I liked best about the story. was the way the author depicted rural America. most stories of this nature. portray the entire nation. like the mad mad world. I'm sure the bigger cities would in fact turn into some kind of nightmare. rural America wouldn't be as bad.
I really think the author got that right. though maybe a little to far in the other direction. as the MC found more generosity than one could possibly hope to find. it was still a more realistic depiction of rural USA. than one finds in most post apocalyptic stories.
overall the story was pretty good. I just wish the protagonists had either made less mistakes and had made better choices.
Many stories of this genre the protagonists never make any mistakes. Even when they start out without any skills or knowledge of how to survive. Seeing the protagonists making mistakes was good, at first, but then they made too many and kept on making them. As if they failed to learn from them.
it would be nice to read a story. That had some balance but that doesn't seem to be the way this genre works.

different names same story
Revisado: 08-28-24
every aspect of this book was already written as a couple of Smoke Jensen books. instead of Elmore Gleason being on trial. for "riding with bloody Bill". the trial and events leading to the trial. were almost word for word. from Smoke Jensen "in the beginning". Elmore's friend is on trial. The Texas governor's daughter was kidnapped and betrayed by the governor's secretary. Duff and friends set out to rescue her.
the same thing occurs in a Smoke Jensen book. only difference is the state on which the governor governs.
the outlaw town. is almost identical to the previous Duff Maccalister book.
the narrator is probably a good narrator. if he's not butchering a Scottish accent.
I'm a fan of the Johnstone stories but this one is pretty lame
it's just bits of other books. put together to tell a new story. it would be plagiarism if anybody else wrote the story

love the story and Gaylord Riley is one of my favorite characters, but if you already have the other title. Don't waste your money buying this one. I got this book forty years ago. for a birthday gift. I was so excited to get a new Louis L'Amour. only to be disappointed. when I realized I already had the book. just with a different title.
there were a few of his books. that this happened with. no fault of the author, nor bantam publishing. the copyright expired and unscrupulous publishers. republished a few of his books. using a new title.

Historia
One of the best-selling Western writers of all time, William W. Johnstone established three of the genre’s most enduring characters in Matt and Smoke Jensen and their stalwart friend Preacher. In Helltown Massacre,, the family Jensen lands squarely in the crosshairs of a railroad tycoon trying to run the iron horse through Paiute territory. To protect the land, three honest men will face half a hundred hired guns—impossible odds, unless you’re a Jensen.

neither of the Johnstones are equal to Mr Louis L'Amour by any means, but their stories are entertaining.
Revisado: 05-04-24
my only real gripe is the overusing and misuse of clichés and phrases. like potshots that are not potshots, or someone's false modesty. when it wasn't false modesty. because she was a modest woman and modesty would have been the proper description. silly things like that, that annoyed me, but didn't really effect the overall story.
I've said it before. these are the best awful books you'll ever read. I've been reading the books written by the Johnstones for awhile now. when I finish one. I start the next one.

truly awful, but great at the same time.
Revisado: 04-18-24
I've read dozens of Johnstones' books and they are all truly awful. outlandish and ridiculous but highly entertaining and I can't stop listening to them.
they'll never compare to the westerns Mr L'Amour wrote, and for me that's the metric by which I judge all western fiction. like I said all of the ones I've listened to are really bad, but they're definitely page turners and if a story is entertaining. I guess that's really all that matters

one of the worst books I've listened to
Revisado: 03-08-24
the main character is neurotic and controlling. Who wants to be the hero, but fails at every turn. he keeps saying he wants to save and protect his family. yet fails to do a damn thing. other than stock up on canned goods to protect anybody. when he should act he doesn't. when he shouldn't act he does and always does the wrong thing. the series should be titled how to die in the first month of the apocalypse

God awful story with protagonists you hope die
Revisado: 03-30-23
is the dumbest concept for any story let alone in an apocalyptic scenario. it's easier to believe Bilbo baggins slew a horde of goblins than this trash. I wish I'd paid for the book so I could return it. I would rather get bee stung in my eye. than read this again. I've seen porn with better plots. I cannot say how bad this story is.

Historia
These seven striking tales of life in rural New England are both lyrical and captivating. Kingdom County, Vermont, is an isolated vestige of an earlier New England. In its rugged hills, a proud and resourceful people struggle to live on the land that is both their adversary and their life’s blood. "Within the borders of his fictional kingdom," the Providence Journal has noted, "Mosher has created mountains and rivers, timber forests and crossroads villages, history and language. And he has peopled the landscape with some of the truest, most memorable characters in contemporary literature."

growing up in the northeast kingdom I was lucky enough to know some old Vermont characters that are just like the fictional characters in Mosher's stories. it is sad to see all those old Vermonters gone now. Mosher's done well at capturing the spirit and attitude of those old independent and fiercely proud Vermonters
