I can’t tell how much of the story would’ve been more interesting if the narrator wasn’t so horrible. It was boring and a struggle to listen to. I have loved the entire Lukas Davenport/prey series…. And have listened to the spinoff of Letty and flowers. I was really looking forward to this one. This is the second time that Audible has ruined an anxiously awaited “prey series” novel with a horrible narrator. It was almost like Lukas Davenport wasn’t even in this book, the way the area portrayed him was so droll and annoying. It was like he wasn’t even there. And the interpretation of flowers was pretty painful too.

Spoiler alert, the ending was ridiculous and frustrating because there was no ending! No one knows if anyone even got convicted. It just ended in a very unfinished way. I guess I have to be done with the Lukas Davenport series if they’re going to keep making them like this.

I get it that we will never have Richard Ferrone again, but at least find someone like Joe Barrett or any other experienced narrator who can breathe life into the characters.

Shippable part of the series .. unless it’s just downhill from here. Meandering story. Weak lame ending.

There are probably spoiler bits in this review…

First off, I love the series and was so looking forward to the next installment. Also, since they were going to pit Tommy and Evan against each other, I thought the story would have so much more depth. I was excited to see that it was so long and was expecting a really great story… Alas, there were so many long stretches of completely unnecessary verbiage. At one point there was literally nine minutes, describing with the inside of a dance hall looks like and no one even went in. It had nothing to do with the story. It’s almost like he was just trying to see how many useless meandering diatribes he could fit into one book to stretch out the story that was so lacking in every other way.

The people that Evan decided to “help“ played a very little role in the story. The whole thing just seemed poorly put together. They could’ve picked a way better nemesis or bad situation to have put them both in and resolve.

And all of the melodrama about Evan’s feelings… Aside from the fact that it was beaten to death, it’s also pretty unbelievable. Like yes, we get it that Evan has been taught how to be tough and not emotional, but to act like he didn’t even know what was happening with his face when he was all of the sudden and sad it’s just too much …. It just seems like there was such a great opportunity for a real story and this was pieced together from a bunch of things that didn’t really amount too much. Pretty disappointing.

Man, I really wanted to like this book. It started off seeming like it was going to be interesting. But eventually, it’s like they just ran out of story. In the beginning, it was OK hearing every detail of him, taking a bite and picking food off a menu and walking slowly and slow-rolling out all of the cliché things about his past and who he was etc. etc. But after the 100th time of him PAINSTAKINGLY telling the exact same PREDICTABLE story to people who inexplicably just couldn’t understand it until he played out every detail for them, which was in its self grossly Unbelievable….. It got annoying

.

Spoiler alert:

Also, we are supposed to believe that the entire FBI and police department and small-town Sheriff and everyone else involved were just so clueless that only one guy could figure out what a major drug lord was doing? This is where it went from predictable/cliché and boring to just stupid. Oh - and the writer spent more time detailing unnecessary, weird points about every single person who picked him up on his little hitchhiking adventure, than on any actual investigations or plot. Essentially, there’s a lot of wandering, and then he just miraculously figures everything out that was predictable five chapters before he figured it out and of course, decided he was the only one who could handle it all on his own. Just disappointingly cliché and weak storytelling.

I think the story was interesting… Maybe? I don’t know, I am starting the Virgil flowers series just because I loved the Lukas Davenport series…. In the end, this story did get interesting but good Lord the narrator was so monotone, I had to start so many chapters over and over again just to catch what was happening. It was like he was bored having to read it all. The last couple of chapters got good though. All in all if I had known how painful it would be to listen to this guy through the entire book, I would have just looked up the cliff notes and gone onto the next one.You don’t miss anything in the life of Virgil flowers by skipping this book.

I love the author, the characters, narrator etc …. But this story just meanders on with very little purpose.

Spoilers!

Unless the purpose is Jake is now broke and the case is unfinished. It’s cute and I guess there’s “personal growth “ bc the entire summary is Jake is now so mature that he doesn’t care what people think anymore. Yippee. But I thought we all read these for the cases and everything around them. So how do you NOT FINISH THE CASE?! The ending died out SOOO slowly until it finally fizzled into nothingness. Like literally nothing is finished. Guess the author grew to not care what people thought as well.

I do love the narrator but the extended periods of him doing the voice of a woman crying are like nails on a chalk board.

I normally have great respect for Scott break and sometimes will even listen to a book that he narrates just because I can count on it being done well. But I don’t know what happened here… Was this in his “melodramatic period?” or was this recorded before he knew how to mediate the melodrama? Every sentence was so over the top. Maybe the story was so boring that he felt he had to kick in something extra? I don’t know, but it was annoying.

As far as the story, I can’t even tell if it was going to be interesting because the narration was so horrible but I don’t think it was. It’s like there was a fundamental structure of a story that could’ve been cool and interesting but just never got there. I tried so hard to keep going back and listen to the chapters that I zoned out on because it was so boring and melodramatic.

Spoiler alert… Not that you’re missing anything but just a heads up… Literally the most interesting thing that happened was some minorly and poorly addressed affection between the main character and the woman he works with who was just randomly killed in some situation that literally had nothing to do with the rest of the story and was so far removed that it didn’t even make sense but was somehow just thrown in for emotional investment maybe? IDK but it was stupid and poorly handled and was the only thing interesting that happened. And the author kept putting in poorly placed Hawaiian slang, just for what? Emphasis? Who knows but it rolled off the story like a porcupine in a sandpit. I kept waiting for the character development to be good or the story to get intense or anything else that I assume the author intended to happen but it just never did. I finally got so bored that I deleted it and went to another book. The ending might be good, but I doubt it. I wish someone had told me not to bother paying for it.

I keep waiting for the author to change it up. I admit I’m curious what happens next with the characters but it’s all gotten pretty dull. Literally every single book has the exact same structure.

1 - so many characters thrown in that you have to write them down to keep up and it makes it all muddled.
2- there should be a drinking game for every time something is “niggling at the back of his mind“. You’ll be hammered.
3- every time the author discovers a new catchphrase he over uses it I.e. “ he smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes” 🤦‍♀️
4- literally every single time… At the end of the book, there is a long diatribe where Decland explains everything. I mean in one book he literally had the entire legislature of England, including the queen sitting there, possibly poisoned while explained how he figured it all out and everyone admitted what they did. It’s ridiculous honestly. EVERY. SINGLE. BOOK.

I guess the point where you don’t really even have to listen because you know at the end, there’s gonna be too many characters to have kept up with and someone’s just going to admit what they did even when they are holding him at gunpoint and could shoot him at any second they’re going to wait for him to give his long explanation.

The “crime” in each book could be interesting, possibly. But the fact that he follows the exact same recipe for every single story, just speaks to laziness and pushing a bunch of books out without really putting any effort in. I listened because it was free and I was out of credits and then I listened again a couple of times because they were free and I wanted to see if it got any better. They didn’t. Is the exact same story literally every single time.

This book started off a bit slow, and I wasn’t sure I was going to get into it. The narration is a little slow and dry, but ends up being the perfect voice of the main character. I love the way the plot unfolded, and the story was told by the end I couldn’t wait to recommend it to my friends to read. I just ordered a hardcopy to give us a gift to someone. I’m so happy I heard this story.

The narration was monotonous and there were so many times I lost count where I had to go back and listen to a chapter again because I had zoned out. Or there was no transition between characters or chapters and I didn’t realize something new was happening.

Also, the writing was a bit lazy and cliché. Spoiler alert! seriously, the main character just sees stuff in his imagination and dreams and that’s how they figure things out? And even with that lameness there were still holes in the story. Pretty disappointing all around.
