A True Classic

Stories and performance good but outdated
Revisado: 10-11-19
He clearly has a great way to capture the audience through wonderful storytelling to explain the concepts. But many of the stories were based on successes in an era when white men worked with other white men and it doesn’t all quite translate. (Many stories of wives cooking and helping working men practice their selling game, etc). I get that this is a classic, but didn’t quite realize it really is a classic in all senses. You have to put it in that context. Many of the actually concepts behind the stories still resonate. Some do not.

Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader, whether the CEO at a Fortune 100 company, an entrepreneur, a church pastor, the head of a school, or a government official. Richard Rumelt argues that the heart of a good strategy is insight - into the true nature of the situation, into the hidden power in a situation, and into an appropriate response. He shows you how insight can be cultivated with a wide variety of tools for guiding your own thinking.

Great ideas buried in many stories
Revisado: 12-10-18
It had some really great ideas in there but too many stories - and too many focused on tech/engineering, large companies, and history for my taste. But I still learned some great tips - you just really have to focus and listen carefully because they are buried in the stories.

A few main points; highly engaging
Revisado: 06-27-18
While his character acting leaves something to be desired, he is quite engaging and does make some really good points. Of course as most of these books go it could have been summarized on one sheet of paper. But I think he really drove home the point with his examples and that was helpful to hear. Overall it was a really enjoyable book to listen to! And I learned a lot.

Sense and Sensibility

Historia
Sense and Sensibility is a sharply detailed portrait of the decorum surrounding courtship and the importance of marriage for women in early 19th-century upper-class English society. The story revolves around Elinor and Marianne Dashwood who, as members of the upper class, cannot "work" for a living and must therefore make a suitable marriage to ensure their livelihood. Elinor is a sensible, rational creature, while her younger sister, Marianne, is wildly romantic - a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion.

Surprisingly disappointing for a “classic” novel
Revisado: 02-13-18
This was my first exposure to this classic book. I was surprised at how disappointing it was Considering it is supposed to be a classic. I couldn’t quite determine whether it was the actual writing which felt to me like it was thin in character development and plot, or if it was the narrator who sometimes made it difficult to figure out who was speaking because there was minimal changes in her tone and inflection. It’s possible the story would have been good with the different narrator but I can’t tell.

Story and performance did not keep me engaged enough to finish the book
Revisado: 01-07-18
People seemed to rate this so highly and I’m not sure why. The performance is not great - pausing constantly in places I would not want to pause - a sort of staccato style. I suppose the descriptions of the situations would be funnier if the performance were better but hard to tell. Currently seem just hackneyed. And the book couldn’t keep my interested enough to finish it - I got through about 4 chapters before giving up.

Historia
Gene Grossman has written more than 45 books, 20 of which are the popular full-length Peter Sharp legal mysteries and Suzi B. mysteries, now being heard all over the world. As an author, Gene reveals all of the things he sees other writers of mystery books and television shows do that makes him immediately either close the book or change the channel. Every person intending to write a suspenseful mystery novel or television show should avoid doing the things on Gene's list, and instead concentrate on his rules.

Left me wanting more
Revisado: 12-24-17
The author narrated and he did a great job with that. The rules themselves, which were the titles of each section, were good and useful but The author’s explanations don’t really provide enough information in each section to be able to apply the rule in a technical way and often he goes on tangents which steer off the path of the main message. My bigger concern however is that based on the title of the book “rules to follow when writing a suspense mystery” I expected it to be in all genres of suspense or mystery. Instead it was focused on crime novel writing only and at times the author referred to the title as being about writing a crime mystery. Makes me wonder if they changed the audible title to appeal to more audiences. Also more than half of the author’s points are based on movies not novels. That doesn’t always apply to writing.
