I just couldn’t get past the way it starts with both characters getting drugged and then having supposedly consensual sex. Repugnant. I did listen awhile longer but the interactions just rang hollow and plot wasn’t enough to draw me in.

This take is partly a 10k ft overview with historical context and partly an intimate account in the words of eye witnesses battered by an unimaginable disaster with no way to find a cause or make it stop. It is well worth the time and credit.

That was depressing and pointless. There was no plot, and no resolution, and there is nothing good in the world. Just ugh.

The reading was quite good, however.

I got past the first book and just a little bit into the second, without finding an answer to the question: what’s the point? The first book is unending battle with an extremely unsatisfying epilogue that made me want to hit things. The second book leaps in time with no discernible connection to the first. If the first one hadn’t been so completely depressing I might have pushed through the second in spite of the disconnect, but I don’t trust the authors not to leave me down in the dumps by the end. Returning.

For me there was just too much of the bad guys always getting their way, too much of the good guys being just a little too late, too much of almost knowing the secret. I admit I got annoyed about halfway through and listened to the rest in bits and pieces but I am truly disappointed in the ending - I hate omniscient villains!

I give the title 3 stars because I'm still interested in the plot to give the next one a try. I hope it's a more balanced story.

I was all set to really like this book, and I did for the most part, until the end. I don't understand the interaction between Picard and the annoying admiral - it didn't resolve or even respond to the conflict between them earlier in the story, but rather brought in some new (old) issue that had nothing to do with this book. And then the follow-up on earth was kind of a weird postscript that didn't add any and also left me with unanswered questions.

I don't regret the credit and I'd try other books by this author, but the lack of cohesion at the end was disappointing.

This is a super series, well-written as all his books are, but this is better paced in a lot of ways and steers clear of some of the darker themes that distract me from the Honor Harrington series. In any case, I spend a lot less time worrying that he'll kill off secondary characters that I like.

Of course, given the target audience, there's less depth and complexity to the story, but it's a fun ride and an easy listen. I recommend!

This author is a master of plot and pacing, and I can't wait for the next one. The storyline continues to be engaging, the twists and turns are believable, and the characters continue to be likable in all their strengths and flaws.

As much as I prefer audiobooks for the freedom to do other things while listening, I may actually be impatient enough to go for the Kindle version of the next book, since it's already out. I need to know what happens next!

Quintessential TNG

This book isn't flashy or dramatic but it is a really enjoyable listen for a TNG fan. We've got the scanning of phase variances and reconfiguring of photon torpedoes and re routing of power from the rear deflectors - a typical Star Trek story, with all my favorite characters behaving just as one would expect. It was like curling up in front of a fire on a cold night. With hot chocolate. And the narrator was spot on, I could always tell who was speaking, and he got the cadences and accents down very well.

It does bear mentioning that you should pay attention to the chapter headings - I sometimes let those flow over me, but I realized they were key to knowing where/when you are in the dimensional shift.

All around enjoyable, solid 4 star listen. I recommend to other fans!
