Historia
Henry Townsend, a black farmer, bootmaker, and former slave, has a fondness for Paradise Lost and an unusual mentor, William Robbins, perhaps the most powerful white man in antebellum Virginia's Manchester County. Under Robbins's tutelage, Henry becomes proprietor of his own plantation, as well as of his own slaves. When he dies, his widow Caldonia succumbs to profound grief, and things begin to fall apart.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Required reading for all genuine patriots
Revisado: 11-13-24
Listening to this book AFTER the 2024 election is truly depressing and scary. Maddow tells an inspiring story, but the bottom line is that in the 1930s we did not have a fascist as president.

Historia
Long before books were mass-produced, hand-copied scrolls made from Nile River reeds were the treasures of the ancient world. Emperors and pharaohs, determined to possess them, dispatched emissaries to the edges of the known world to bring them back. Exploring the deep and fascinating history of the written word, from the oral tradition to scrolls to codices, internationally bestselling author Irene Vallejo shows that books have always been a precious and precarious vehicle for civilization.

Egotistical author sabotages great work
Revisado: 07-18-24
The editor was AWOL!! Cut the book by half without losing anything but the author's love of her own prolixity. Also -- clearly a classicist, but all references to Judaism and Jewish books were superficial, condescending, or plain ignorant. Took us four road trips to finish -- too hard to listen for long periods, wading through floods of repetitive prose to reach the islands of terrific content and insight.

Historia
The dust storms that terrorized the High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since. Following a dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region, Timothy Egan tells of their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black dust blizzards, crop failure, and the death of loved ones. Brilliantly capturing the terrifying drama of catastrophe, he does equal justice to the human characters who become his heroes.

Tragic and essential reading

This magnificently documented and thoroughly devastating account of how human greed created the Dust Bowl should be required reading for anyone who thinks that free market economics will save the planet from climate change.

Historia
The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

I knew the bare bones of this story, but was blown away by Egan's history. He connects all the dots to make it clear that this was not some crazy isolated phenomenon. A crucial lesson for today.

What a disappointment!
Revisado: 05-26-24
I listened virtually nonstop to the three Crimson Lake books -- loved the characters and the style and the plots. This felt like an entirely different author. Preposterous plot, caricatures rather than characters, and totally formulaic. Not sure now I want to waste any more credits on Candice Fox.

Six minutes in the wrong place at the wrong time—that’s all it took to ruin Sydney detective Ted Conkaffey’s life. Accused but not convicted of a brutal abduction, Ted is now a free man—and public enemy number one. Great plot and characters -- I couldn't stop listening. One or two rather contrived ways of advancing the plot, but I'm still looking forward to reading the next one.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.
