Historia
In the 1980s, a young adventurer and collector for a government library, Abdel Kader Haidara, journeyed across the Sahara Desert and along the Niger River, tracking down and salvaging tens of thousands of ancient Islamic and secular manuscripts that had fallen into obscurity. The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu tells the incredible story of how Haidara, a mild-mannered archivist and historian from the legendary city of Timbuktu, later became one of the world's greatest and most brazen smugglers.

Captain Andrew St. James always knew he came from a noble family, but his branch grew far from the wealth and status. Nothing shocks him more than learning that he now stands as heir presumptive to his distant cousin the Duke of Carlyle. There is much for Drew to learn and adjust to - but first he goes home to Edinburgh, to tell his mother and three sisters of their startling good fortune.

The plot is uninformed, the characters hopeless and the reader think that gargling your vowels is a Scottish accent.

Historia
A captivating 24-lecture audio series on the US Constitution by award-winning law professor David L. Hudson Jr. Written more than 200 years ago, the Constitution remains the backbone of American government and an example of freedom and democracy the world over. Once called the “Miracle at Philadelphia,” it remains America’s vital governing force today. Your audio course will begin in the summer of 1787, as the Founding Fathers met to revise the Articles of Confederation, then explore the ratification process and James Madison’s championing of the Bill of Rights.

Not quite ready for prime time
Revisado: 05-11-22
I am fascinated with our Constitution. And this course nearly squelched that. It wasn't at the college level, nor even the high school letter. A declarative sentence does not become enlightening by saying " in other words" and then repeating the exact same words in the first utterance. Add to that his political affiliation shone through. Of course he has people he agrees with, but an even-handed approach would try to understand the reverse point of view, not hold it in obvious contempt. And way too much padding, too much repetition. Save your credits.

Historia
Linguists have been studying Black English as a speech variety for years, arguing to the public that it is different from Standard English, not a degradation of it. Yet false assumptions and controversies still swirl around what it means to speak and sound "Black." In his first book devoted solely to the form, structure, and development of Black English, John McWhorter clearly explains its fundamentals and rich history while carefully examining the cultural, educational, and political issues that have undermined recognition of this transformative, empowering dialect.

As much fun as all of McWhorter's works but also
Revisado: 11-21-20
enlightening. I am a fan of john McWhorter's books even as I have to blush at my mental red-penciling of other people's "bad grammar". He makes it clear that language is what the speakers make it, and that grammars are out of date on the day they are published. He teaches with humor and clarity, and yet challenges our thinking. In this book he brings all those skills to play, but also a fond relationship to the language of people he loves. I remember the days of Ebonics, but could never quite believe that black speech of that sort was a legitimate language. I am glad to be corrected, gently but firmly.

Rodgers and Hart. George and Ira Gershwin. Cole Porter. Lerner and Loewe. For most people who've grown up with and shared America's musical heritage, great songs open the floodgates to memories and feelings. Perhaps nowhere is this more profound than in the world of Broadway musicals, with their iconic melodies and memorable lyrics.Revisit the standards, originally written for the stage, that have both delighted and helped mend the broken hearts of Americans for decades.

It was a little embarrassing that I knew the words to all the songs, even the oldest. Still, most of them were fun and had me singing to my garden as I worked. Thank goodness no one could hear me.

Historia
Jackson Brodie has relocated to a quiet seaside village, in the occasional company of his recalcitrant teenage son and an aging Labrador, both at the discretion of his ex-partner Julia. It's picturesque, but there's something darker lurking behind the scenes. Jackson's current job, gathering proof of an unfaithful husband for his suspicious wife, is fairly standard-issue, but a chance encounter with a desperate man on a crumbling cliff leads him into a sinister network—and back across the path of his old friend Reggie.

That voice and the inability to come to the point
Revisado: 06-21-20
I simply couldn't bear this book any longer. The "story" appears to be the same recitation of his expertise and the same reiteration of a single point, interspersed with anecdotes, which automatically makes me suspicious. I might be able to get through the printed book, but this was just annoying.

Historia
A behind-the-scenes operator at the CIA, Wallace was integral to the agency's secret war against China's national intelligence service, which infiltrates government offices, major businesses, and systems crucial to our security. Wallace had severely damaged China's Washington spy ring with a devastating ruse, a so-called "black swan", in which a deep-undercover female agent targeted and destroyed a key Chinese official. Now, Wallace's mysterious death suggests that the CIA itself has been compromised and that China has someone inside the agency.

One of the best
Revisado: 04-25-18
I like Dick Francis books so much that I do a retrospective of his work about every 5th summer. For someone writing in what would appear to be a very limited genre, he never repeats himself. Here he shows his ability to show fully developed characters and the perspectives are fascinating. The usual interest of a completely new background brings the visuals to life, and the storyline offers just the right amount of twists and turns. Loved it.
