It has been twenty-seven long years since the last sunrise. For nearly three decades, vampires have waged war against humanity; building their eternal empire even as they tear down our own. Now, only a few tiny sparks of light endure in a sea of darkness.

definitely not a glittery 🦇 book

So, I heard about Empire of the Vampire from one of those "must-read" lists — but to be totally honest, I was a little put off at first. The title and the cover made me think it was going to be one of those vampire books, and I wasn’t sure I was up for it. But I was between my advanced review books and wanted something longer than my usual quick reads, so I figured, "Why not?"
And wow — I was not disappointed.
First of all, this book is long. Like, so long that I had to return it to the library before I was even close to done. But I was hooked, so I used an Audible credit to keep going, and I have zero regrets. The narration was fantastic and made the whole dark, brutal world even more immersive.
One of the coolest things about this book is how the vampires are done. They’re not your typical brooding, sexy types — these are more like a terrifying mix of vampires and zombies. Scary, wild, and dangerous in a way that keeps the tension up the whole time.
The way the story is told is also different, and I loved that. The main character, Gabriel, is basically a prisoner, being forced to tell his life story. So you get this mix of reflection, bitterness, and brutal honesty that makes you feel like you’re sitting there with him, hearing every gory detail.
And let me tell you — Gabriel’s story is a ride. He starts off kind of rough but still hopeful, finds moments of real joy (which makes you root for him even more), but then life keeps knocking him down, and you watch him get harder and angrier. His journey feels real — messy, painful, and complicated — which I love in a character.
Also, I didn’t expect all the deep dives into religion and God, but wow, Kristoff went there. Some of the quotes about God and faith were brutally honest in a way that surprised me — but in a good way. It added this whole other layer to the story that made me think about it long after I finished.
All in all, Empire of the Vampire was way more than I expected — dark, emotional, intense, and totally worth the time. If you’re into gritty fantasy with sharp edges, complicated characters, and a whole lot of blood (seriously, a lot), definitely give this one a try.

Love the book, but couldn't quite feel the reading
Revisado: 08-01-12
I grew up on BC and so I was so excited to see this book for my five year old daughter who loves listening at play time. I was a bit saddened when she didn't like this as much as others, however I figured it was because it was a mouse and not a girl. However, I listened to it and couldn't get into the story myself!! I love BD Wong on SVU and watched him on Awake. I have always found his voice relaxing and enjoyable, but in this story it was too relaxable and the story was a bit flatlined.

Great family series
Revisado: 08-01-12
I love how closely the movie stuck to the book. After my five year old daughter listened to the book, she was allowed to watch the movie. She fell even more in love with the characters! We have truly enjoyed this series. My daughter loves to read, but isn't quite able to read chapter books alone yet so this series has become our bed time series. I love that it isn't like the other "children's" series and the language and themes are appropriate. I cannot say the same for some of the others. This series has made her curious about so much and I even enjoy them as an adult!
