Listening to this makes me happy that addiction of this sort has never been a concern for me but it makes me feel gutted inside for those I know who have been victim to it and for those I know but don’t know like Perry who have, until recently, been living with it a very long time. RIP Matty.

So much mislisting going on here

I saw one other review saying that this book was listed incorrectly as horror. I learned of this book from reading a most-anticipated sci-fi & fantasy books list for 2023. It is truly none of the above, at least not fully. A salad bowl, perhaps? Maybe one part coming of age drama, one part family drama, one part immigrant drama, one part LGBTQIA+ love story, one part student athletics drama, and maybe a dash of fantasy that doesn’t begin until the final 5% of the book. It’s really all over the place. But that’s not to say it’s not very interesting and well written. It is. I enjoyed it immensely. But it just wasn’t what I had been promised going in. Really the best thing you can do is just read it. Skip the reviews and read.

Better than I expected

I was reading through some of the reviews as I approached the end of this book and was shocked by some of the really low ones. Too boring, too long, not exciting, etc.

I came into this book knowing absolutely nothing about it other than the Hulu limited series was a couple weeks from airing. So I started... and tore through it like it was nothing. I hung on every word, reveled in every nuance. It’s the most interested I’ve been in a book in a while. And while the ending wasn’t the twist I thought it could’ve been, I loved it. I can’t believe how much I loved it.

It has some good stories but I’m not sold

While a handful of these stories are really good and offer some great insight into life in the SW universe, there are quite a few that are really just a literal shift in point of view of a scene with which we are all already familiar from Episode IV: A New Hope. Except for one that really doesn’t fit in at all. And I’m pretty sure that there are aspects of stories that contradict each other especially where Greedo is concerned. There are also some vocal performances where speech patterns of the characters are so painful to listen to that I just wanted to fast forward and skip the story entirely.

Some of the standout stories include Claudia Gray’s “Master and Apprentice,” Madeline Roux’s “Eclipse,” Nnedi Okafor’s “The Baptist,” Gary D Schmidt’s “There is Another,” Wil Wheaton’s “Laina,” Charles Soule’s “The Angle,” and Tom Angleberger’s “Whills.”

Magnificently read

I worry when a single narrator reads an entire story full of completely disparate characters. But somehow, Steven Weber, with sounding goofy in the process, brought to life dozens of characters (several at different stages of their lives) and did it so that I easily understood who was who.

Nothing needs to be said about the story itself. You know it. Just pick this up and carve out 45 hours.
