Sinister mushrooms growing in a dank cellar. A family's first glimpse at Martians. A wonderful white vanilla ice-cream summer suit that changes everyone who wears it. All those images and many more are inside this book, 31 of Bradbury's most arresting tales - timeless short fiction that ranges from the farthest reaches of space to the innermost stirrings of the heart.

narrator YELLS!
Revisado: 04-11-24
I don't usually complain about narration. It's usually just a difference of preference. This narrator though... whenever anyone in a story raises their voice or gets excited YELLS, even when it doesn't fit the scene at all. I'm still gonna finish the book but my god, is it BAD.

Historia
The following information pertains to the individual who lived that lifetime known to those on Earth as Adolf Hitler. This information will be provided to give a better understanding of the man himself, and what truly took place within that human existence, and what his overall role was to be in that lifetime. Many see him as a monster, mad man, a murderous fanatic and the like, but once you see him from a different perspective, that of a being sent from another dimension to teach mankind a much-needed lesson, then you may have another viewpoint to study and ponder over. Life is never, ever...

It's like getting stuck talking to a weirdo on the bus
Revisado: 01-31-24
So, this book is an hour and twenty five minutes long. It feels like listening to a cult leader talk in circles about spirituality and energy. We're all here to find out what this nutjob has to say about Hitler. He seems to think what Hitler did was bad and evil but was sent by spirits from another dimension to show us how awful war is and how evil humans can be. The author doesn't seem to be dangerous or hateful, just nuts .

Historia
It was 13 October 1972. Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, carrying a team of young rugby players, their families and friends, took off for the very last time. A deadly miscalculation saw F571 crash directly into the Andean mountains to devastating consequences: the body of the plane broke violently into two, its floor torn to smithereens; seats flew out of the air taking passengers with them. In the weeks that followed, the remaining people who were on board - the society of the snow - emerged to fight a dire, gruelling battle for survival.

More honest than the book Alive
Revisado: 12-21-23
I've read Alive, Miracle in the Andes by Nando Parrados and I had to survive by Roberto Canessa. This book is by far the most comprehensive. There are verbatim interviews with all sixteen survivors. I think that's very important. There has been a lot of myth making around the disaster. This account includes those survivors who were simply shattered by the experience and didn't undergo a massive spiritual and personal transformation. Even those who disagree with the story being exploited by the other survivors are given a chance to share their views. I am inspired by the survivors who have a message to share but I think it's also valid to just want to get on with your life. Rare interviews. Non Linear presentation. Fantastic insights. The TRUTH!

Historia
The Great Hunger is the story of one of the worst disasters in world history: the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s. Within five years, one million people died of starvation. Emigrants by the hundreds of thousands sailed for America and Canada in small, ill-equipped, dangerously unsanitary ships. Some ships never arrived; those that did carried passengers already infected with and often dying of typhus. The Irish who managed to reach the United States alive had little or no money....

I was really turned off by the narrator...at first
Revisado: 04-11-21
I thought it very absurd that a brit with an upper crust accent should read this book. But when you get to the heart of this book, it's really about all that was done and not done by the great Lords of England. Nothing sounds better than to hear the abominable things written about the Irish in the most detached sophisticated way possible.
Having said that, this book was hard for me to finish. I've read a lot about horrible historical acts but this one really hurt to read. The suffering is unbearable to imagine. If only the camera was in use at this time, the haughty, self centered, perfectly correct British Government would never gotten away with this. Unbelievable.

Historia
On September 1, 1894, two forest fires converged on the town of Hinckley, Minnesota, trapping over 2,000 people. Daniel J. Brown recounts the events surrounding the fire in the first and only book to chronicle the dramatic story that unfolded. Whereas Oregon's famous "Biscuit" fire in 2002 burned 350,000 acres in one week, the Hinckley fire did the same damage in five hours. The fire created its own weather, including hurricane-strength winds, bubbles of plasmalike glowing gas, and 200-foot-tall flames.

Historia
A comprehensive catalog of the most devastating and deadly events-natural or man-made-in human history. If you follow the news it can seem like injury, sickness, and death are now constant, inescapable occurrences that threaten us every second of every day. But such catastrophic events - as terrible and frightening as they are - have been happening for as long as mankind has walked the Earth.... and even before. From ancient volcanoes and floods to epidemics of cholera and smallpox to Hitler's mass killings in the 20th century, humanity's continued existence has always seemed perilous.

Historia
On the afternoon of December 30, 1903, during a sold-out matinee performance, a fire broke out in Chicago's Iroquois Theatre. In the short span of twenty minutes, more than six hundred people were asphyxiated, burned, or trampled to death in a panicked mob's failed attempt to escape. In Chicago Death Trap: The Iroquois Theatre Fire of 1903, Nat Brandt provides a detailed chronicle of this horrific event to assess not only the titanic tragedy of the fire itself but also the municipal corruption and greed that kindled the flames beforehand and the political cover-ups hidden in the smoke and ash afterwards.

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Horrible Horrible Horrible!
Revisado: 01-15-21
An absolute MESS of a novel. The main characters spend most of the book complimenting each other and swearing to never let their feelings show. This book dragged on and on and on. I'm honestly shocked. This is supposed to be a classic and it's almost unreadable. The ONLY reason I finished it is because it's Dracula and I wanted to see it through till the end. Don't waste your time on this garbage heap.

La moria grandissima began its terrible journey across the European and Asian continents in 1347, leaving unimaginable devastation in its wake. Five years later, 25 million people were dead, felled by the scourge that would come to be called the Black Death. The Great Mortality is the extraordinary epic account of the worst natural disaster in European history - a drama of courage, cowardice, misery, madness, and sacrifice that brilliantly illuminates humankind's darkest days when an old world ended and a new world was born.

Olga Lengyel tells, frankly and without compromise, one of the most horrifying stories of all time. This true, documented chronicle is the intimate, day-to-day record of a beautiful woman who survived the nightmare of Auschwitz and Birchenau. This book is a necessary reminder of one of the ugliest chapters in the history of human civilization.

Fantastical
Revisado: 09-25-20
The author was in close personal contact with Dr. Mengele, Irma Grese, and the other lead medical SS officer in the camp. She was personally able to secretly sneak to see the revolt and ensuing battle of the Sonderkommando. She personally murdered babies of fellow inmates. She was personally privy to all the knowledge of the experiments carried out by the nazi doctors. I'm not saying these things didnt happen but I dont think they all happened to her. This book reads like a movie where all the important things just happen to one person instead of different people.
