Wildly original! Also … many things.
Revisado: 05-03-25
Rapid fire humor, nice locales. The writer swings for the bleachers in every joke or wild idea or plain old surreal slapstick.
A bit sexist, might annoy some readers. A cheerful good natured William Burroughs reality.

Historia
Dark Adventure Radio Theatre: The Whisperer in Darkness presents Lovecraft's classic tale of alien horror in a 1930s-style radio drama. The tale comes alive with a cast of professional actors and thrilling sound effects. Albert Wilmarth, a professor of folklore at Miskatonic University, receives a curious piece of mail. It contains a recording of a man claiming that strange creatures live in the remote regions of the mountains of Vermont - just as described in old folklore.

Good but….
Revisado: 02-10-25
Really, I would have preferred a good Audible recitation of the actual written story! I found the actual written story near perfect in its shadowy description of dark mountain forests and what might lurk there. Its pacing and increasing revealing of spooky details as “the plot thickens “ was Lovecraft at his disciplined best. Extraterrestrial horrors held at bay by dogs outside the remote farm house. To me, this episodic radio theater and its slightly goofy protagonist lost all that.
Well, their “Shadow over Insmouth” was excellent!

Outstanding! Better than the written story!

Really enjoyed this. Spoken words and script conveyed the feeling of the ocean, its depths and mystery. Deep Ones and their desires sounded realistic. Script and narrative made the madness in the south seas sound like historical fact. If you have ever spent time on or by the ocean you will relate….

Historia
In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

Good, maybe excellent, not great…
Revisado: 12-25-24
A bit of a disappointment. After pondering the price, I went for it at a discount. The reviews were superb!
Well, I found the lengthy middle back story too slow and past tense.
The novel doesn’t have the intensity of the best Stephen King novels. Again, that historical long middle section. Plus, not all that unique in its well written imagery.
But it’s a B plus, for sure.

We have here this great travel book...100% Mary!
Revisado: 09-22-23
I've got big travel dreams, but I'm the worry filled -I could lose my passport!-, get to the airport 5 hours ahead of my departure time -kind of guy.. Sounds familiar? What can we cautious types do to get inspiration to go to the lands where we truly want to go?
Well, on a moonless night, we could hit that searchlight switch and send out the Bartnikowski signal!
Or, easier, lets all listen again and again to any or all of Bartnikowski's enchanting travel stories!
She has been everywhere; to every tiger filled jungle, slept on every stone floor mattress in every monastery on the roofs of our world. Done serious tropical beach time.
Shes got the courage of a water buffalo, took me a while to realize that.
Shes truly spiritual in the most practical way. Also a really outstanding photographer; and her generosity in sharing her trade secrets is alone worth buying this book.
The tales in this book are highly descriptive, hella inspiring, humorously rueful, and on occasion sarcastic. (She isn't people shy.)
I wasn't sure if she could do audio justice to her written word. She sure can. Her Mary spirit is in every spoken story, and her command of tone and emotions is quite alive and professional. Much better than many other authors, such as, oh, say, Stephen King.
Listen to these tales and c'mon, lets be Mary!

Just a perfect Unknown Species Horror Novel!
Revisado: 12-10-22
Magnificent! Excellent pacing, atmosphere, a story rich with detail and life. 2 police detectives stumble into a unknown animal nightmare. You breathe the NYC winter cold as monsters and humans track each other down.
Description, inspired story, gritty wintry NYC, inspired writing and pacing, blending of fantasy and street reality as good as King at his best…

His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Boring. Slow. Save your money
Revisado: 12-01-22
“Fairy Tale “ is a intriguing title. The novel goes downhill from there, sags under its own weight. Kings intensity is gone. Told first person past tense, not exciting.
Same for “The Institute”.

Just perfect spooky awe myth tale
Revisado: 08-06-22
I think this is far better than the more acclaimed “the Willows” by Blackwood. To me it never came across effectively. Did I miss something? But Wendigo delivers. Mythology, alone in the not so empty woods, guns because something is out there. Well told now also.
