Good story, but...
Revisado: 04-13-25
All I can say is the ending/non ending was very disappointing. More than that, it stunk.Perhaps there will be a sequel, perhaps not, but this was a lousey way to treat the reader.I expect more from Sandford. .

Probably pretty good, but not my thing.
Revisado: 02-28-25
This book may be pretty good; I'm only reviewing my personal opinion of it.
I really can't objectively rate this book. That's why I just gave it 3 stars.
I really wanted to like this book even though I rarely read nor enjoy short stories, but since these were mysteries, and Sara Paretsky edited, and there was a Michael Connelly story included, I thought I'd give it a try. I gave up after a few stories. One was not really so bad (Kiss of Life), a couple WERE pretty bad (especially White Chocolate), and the one by Connelly was just OK (I am a big Connelly fan, he's one of the best, if not the best crime/mystery writer there is (for me), but this short story fell flat for me. Short stories pretty much bore me. They so often start off strong then fizzle at the end; sometimes too clever, sometimes "so what", sometimes so predictable. Overall, for me, they just go nowhere.
If short stories are your thing, this may be the book for you.

The two have a troubled past, but he owes her a favor and she’s cashing in.

Mediocre, boring...
Revisado: 02-03-25
A big letdown, as I was expecting something better from Deaver. I've never read anything anything from Maldonado, and probably won't after reading this book. This book was not all believable. And this "intrusion" concept seemed to me to be ridiculous; an unnecessary complication. in analyzing evidence and data relation to a crime.
I wish Deaver would stick to being the sole author of books he produces. I really don't like it when writers team up.. James Patterson is another who does this to no great effect. From now on, when I see one of these team efforts, I'll just ignore and refuse to read. Are these guys getting paid to lend their name to a lesser writer?

Obviously an abridged version!
Revisado: 09-10-24
I really can't make an fair appraisal of "Falls The Shadow" because what is passing for this title is an apparent abridged version of this title.
I really like William Lashner's books, especially the Victor Carl series, but this version was so hacked up, that it made the listening unenjoyable at various points in the story. It seems as though the original UNabridged book may have been quite good, but it's difficult to prove it by reading this version.
Very disappointed that Audible didn't more clearly identify this as an abridged edition; had I known, I would never have made the purchase.I should have read the fine print more carefully.
Stay away if you like the real thing.

Just OK
Revisado: 08-15-24
I have read and listened (paper & audio) to all of Robert Crais' books - several of them more than once.. He is one of my favorite writers of crime fiction. He's in the top three beside Connelly and Sanford. But this book was not up to his high standards. This audiobook could probably have been improved with a different narrator. Demolition Angel is not a bad book; it's just not what I was expecting from Crais.Maybe If I had read it before I had read all of the other Crais books, I might have felt differently. The Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series is fantastic. His other stand alone novels are also great. The "Two Minute Rule" and "Suspect" are amazing examples. . This one just did not compare. It's worth a read, though. Just don't expect too much.

Waiting
Revisado: 07-16-24
I really thought I'd like this book a lot. I wanted to like it. but I'm 12 hours in and I'm still waiting for something to actually happen. Waiting for there to be a point. I'm about ready to give up and move on to something else. This is not my first Murikami book and that's why I was expecting more than I'm getting from this one.
*********************
Update: I did finish, but would have been better to have given up when I first considered doing so.
I won't be listening to any more Murakami's book after this one.
The fascination with those 13 year old's breasts was a little much. The protagonist was kind of a creep.

Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Historia
When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but he's too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there's a leak in the police force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

Overrated
Revisado: 02-21-24
I'm going to finish it, but I'm forcing myself to do so. I can't wait for it to end.
I'm amazed that this poorly written "mystery" has gotten so many rave reviews.
Mayor may have tons of experience in the real world, but it certainly doesn't show in this book.
Sophomoric is the best description I can give it. Sounds like something a student would produce in a creative writing class.
So many metaphors and similes. I cringed every time he used one. And the overuse of the "ly" adverb was cloying. Walked speedily, thought silently, wrote hurriedly... yuck.
Main character was a doofus. The romantic relationship was ridiculous.
Dialog was terrible.
Nobody talks like the 1st person narration of Joe Gunther
This was my first and last Mayor book.
There are too many fine writers in this genre to wast time on Mayor. Michael Connelly, Sara Paretsky, John Lescroart, Robert Crais, Bill Pronzini, Sue Grafton, James Lee Burke, Raymond Chandler, James Sallis, JohnSandford, and the list goes on.
