Historia
An old man lies dying. Confined to bed in his living room, he sees the walls around him begin to collapse, the windows come loose from their sashes, and the ceiling plaster fall off in great chunks, showering him with a lifetime of debris: newspaper clippings, old photographs, wool jackets, rusty tools, and the mangled brass works of antique clocks. Soon, the clouds from the sky above plummet down on top of him, followed by the stars, till the black night covers him like a shroud. He is hallucinating.

So much of our human body is made up of salt that we'd be dead without it. The fine balance of nature, the trade of salt as a currency of many nations and empires, the theme of a popular Shakespearean play... Salt is best selling author Mark Kurlansky's story of the only rock we eat.

I read this book 20 years ago, and loved it! Reading it again is like reading it for the first time—impossible to remember everything!! I’ll read it again to imprint information, ideas, and recipes. It’s just fascinating like Kurlansky’s other famous book. Cod: the Fish that Changed the World. Everyone should be required to read these in high school World History!

The author of Cod and The Basque History of the World takes an extraordinary look at an ordinary substance — salt, the only rock humans eat — and how it has shaped civilization from the very beginning. Mark Kurlansky has produced a kaleidoscope of history, a multi-layered masterpiece that blends economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

I loved this book and performance! That film was different and definitely not as good as the book, but good nonetheless.

Historia
Published in instalments in 1859, The Woman in White is often considered to be one of the very first detective novels. Although critics weren’t impressed at the time, the novel proved to be a hit with the public and has since gone on to become one of the timeless classics of the Victorian era. Following the adventures of Walter Hartright, this is a story of sleuthing, inheritance, ghosts and mistaken identity and was recently the subject of a hit TV adaptation by the BBC.

Favorite book
Revisado: 11-03-23
I believe that this is also Stephen King’s favorite book. It’s an absolutely wonderful story. I know for a fact that it was Wilkie Collins’ favorite book because he had “Wilkie Collins: Author of The Woman in White inscribed on his tombstone! It’s simply ingenious! I also loved the PBS film, and the recorded radio play. The reader of this book gave a fine performance too! Definitely rates 5 stars!

This is all of life and death in one magnificent book. I read The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner years ago. This novel surpasses it.

Love this series!
Revisado: 10-18-23
I think that Stephen King is not just a great thriller writer, he’s a great writer period. His characters are so finely drawn, and the plots are superb. I’m an English teacher, and King reminds me of Dickens in the scope and sweep of his novels.
