Historia
In 1909, Clementine steps off a train with her new husband, Winston. An angry woman emerges from the crowd to attack, shoving him in the direction of an oncoming train. Just before he stumbles, Clementine grabs him by his suit jacket. This will not be the last time Clementine Churchill will save her husband. Lady Clementine is the ferocious story of the ambitious woman beside Winston Churchill, the story of a partner who did not flinch through the sweeping darkness of war, and who would not surrender either to expectations or to enemies.

The power of the woman behind the man!
Revisado: 04-02-25
Clementine, like Eleanor Roosevelt, was a powerful and influential woman. It was wonderful to get to know her.

Historia
When Lizzie McDuffie, maid to Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt, boldly proclaimed herself FDR’s “Secretary-On-Colored-People’s-Affairs,” she became more than just a maid—she became the President’s eyes and ears into the Black community. After joining the White House to work alongside her husband, FDR’s personal valet, Lizzie managed to become completely indispensable to the Roosevelt family. Never shy about pointing out injustices, she advocated for the needs and rights of her fellow African Americans when those in the White House blocked access to the President.

Nancy Wake was exceptional
Revisado: 09-13-24
I liked learning about Nancy Wake, however the author’s writing style, especially in an audible book, was difficult to follow. The abrupt changes of time periods and abundance of characters and their code names was confusing.

Historia
It was a misty Wednesday morning. Inside the Gestapo headquarters, you could cut the tension with a knife. There was a traitor in their midst: Someone had leaked a list of the SS to the British press. The head of the Gestapo called me into his office. Panelled oak walls, a grand piano in the corner, rugs lining the floor—the place where he ordered executions every day.

Misleading
Revisado: 08-23-24
The story is good, but the title is misleading. Dora didn’t become a secretary to the Nazi until the last several chapters. The beginning was interesting and engaging. This is more factually a novel about a girl fighting in the resistance movement. The narrator was excellent.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

The power within
Revisado: 08-14-24
Martha Ballard should serve as a role model for each of us. She speaks her mind, is truthful, caring and wise. She is never intimidated by anyone. I admired her maturity and strength to remain true to her beliefs. This was an inspiring and enjoyable book, told by an excellent narrator.

The Power of friendship
Revisado: 07-27-24
Each of us has the power to succeed in a relationship. Mary and Eleanore demonstrated how to have a deep and trusting friendship. First, be vulnerable. Sharing who we are with others is the key. Strive to understand and forgive.
These two women overcame each obstacle that attempted to stop them from achieving their goals. They strived to obtain equality for all. However, there is still racism and hatred among us.
The power of one! Let each of us do our best to overcome adversity and be kind, nonjudgmental and honest to each person we encounter.

Exploring identity, place, and exile, Kantika also reveals how the female body—in work, art, and love—serves as a site of both suffering and joy. A haunting, inspiring meditation on the tenacity of women, this lush, lyrical novel from Elizabeth Graver celebrates the insistence on seizing beauty and grabbing hold of one’s one and only life.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 07-08-24
After reading so many five star reviews, I had high expectations for this novel. Unfortunately, i felt the book was a disappointment. It seemed to be a disorganized rambling of boring tales that left me searching for answers. Rebecca goes from a child herself, working woman, married woman, mother of two sons, divorced woman, remarried woman, mother of 3, then 4, then 5 and finally 6 children. I have no idea what happened in between these events.
The narrator’s voice was annoying and her imitation of male and young voices were unconvincing.
All in all, I wish I never read this book!
