This dude has evidently never served because he has no idea about how the military works. A field grade officer with a goatee in 1968? Really? A supposedly elite small unit sitting around in indian country getting into a shouting match and acting like cubscouts? Getting drunk and high in the bush. That may have gone on in the rear but in the bush your brothers would jerk a knot in you. I just hope the movie isn’t as stupid.

This is a good story. An interesting set of characters in an interesting world. The dialogue is engaging. It’s common speech the way troops talk to each other, warts and all. Great descriptions of the action. An intriguing plot that keeps you listening. And thank God for that because the virtual voice narration RUINS the whole evolution. If you can shut out the voice and concentrate on the story then you’ll enjoy the story. Otherwise this is like an excellent dish the cook forgot to add salt to.

What would have made Flesh better?

A different narrator

Would you be willing to try another book from Richard Laymon? Why or why not?

Yes if someone else read it

What didn’t you like about Maynard McKillen’s performance?

Sucked on toast. His narration sounded exactly like a high school shop class safety film

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Story wasn't at all bad. Was the only reason I stuck with it

What would have made The Steel Remains better?

A disclaimer letting people know about the homo erotica

What could Richard K. Morgan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

not written it

What didn’t you like about Simon Vance’s performance?

that he performed this book

Any additional comments?

Please understand that I dont consider myself homophobic. Phobia denotes fear and I have no fear of gay people. I dont care what gay people do or dont do as long as its not forced on me. This book forces homoerotica on me and I dont appreciate it. I know that you were born that way but I was born this way. We all have degrees of tolerance and the depictions of explicit gay sex in this book crosses my boundaries.

Would you consider the audio edition of Heroes Proved to be better than the print version?

No. I wish that I had purchased it for Kindle instead of using my Audible credit.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are a whole bunch of characters in the book and at least 3 plot lines. Probably my favorite protagonist is Admiral Cohen because for an old man he's tough and competent. The best villain has got to be the President who cares for nothing but her reelection and will make any deal or betray any trust to secure it.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Peyton Tochterman?

Anybody! Tochterman was simply AWFUL!!!! Absolutely awful! It really pisses me off when a great story like this is butchered by somebody who can hardly speak. Were it not for the story itself this book would have been intolerable to listen to. His performance is stilted and wooden. He reads like a third grader giving a report on osmosis in front of a class. Whoever hired this guy to be a narrator needs to go back to working at Walmart. Stephan Rudnicki would have made the story. Peyton Tochterman destroyed it

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several times when North describes the conditions in the U.S. under the progressive regime that unnerved me.

Any additional comments?

This book received a poor review prior to mine. Did that reviewer not understand that this book is going to be of a patriotic nature considering the author? He also doesn't seem to care for the subject matter because it does not fit his world view. Perhaps if he were an American Citizen he may have a different perspective. Also as an Irishman how can he develop an opinion on the Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh or Sarah Palin? He also states that the book is anti European, Hispanic and Arab. I dont remember Europeans being portrayed in any light in the book. Hispanics were neutral since there were good and bad. Arabs, maybe but more radical Islam. What the book is really against is runaway political correctness and an unchecked left wing. Anther thing that invalidates his review is that the performance received 3 stars. Now I know why my family left Ireland in 1806

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Ok. First off the story isn't bad. I really like the whole apocalypse genre but this book has some problems. The narrator sucks, he reminds me of the band camp chick from American Pie trying to imitate John Wayne. I don't know where that accent comes from but I don't want to go there. Secondly this is not a stand alone book, it is one of a series. If you don't have the first book in the series you are lost. The author never explains what is going on, how things got to be the way they are or how long they have been in the situation they are in. You have no idea who the characters are or anything about them. The worst thing, and that's debatable, about this book is that Audible released it first. Bad move guys.
A couple of good points is that the author is technically accurate. He knows a good bit about the firearms described and I get the feeling he was infantry from the way he describes some of the action. I was impressed that he knew that hiking down hill can be worse than going up, oohrah there devil dog. Another thing in his favor is that the story isn't gun porn, in which the author takes a paragraph to describe the weapon and a sentence for the action. The action itself is good. The hero gets some boo boos once in a while but he seems to walk between the raindrops so to speak and never receives a major wound. Pretty darn lucky for standing out in the open and letting folks shoot at you

What did you like best about this story?

The genre is enjoyable

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Erik Sandvold?

ANYFRICKINBODY!!! This guy shouldn't be a narrator he ought to be a DJ at a nudie bar.

Was American Apocalypse Wastelands worth the listening time?

It would have been with another narrator and if Audible had released the first book first

Any additional comments?

This is one of those that you get when you have an extra credit but it will never be a first choice

Where does Consent to Kill rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

Would have been in the top tier if not for narration.

What other book might you compare Consent to Kill to and why?

Flynn is one of my favorite thriller writers, anything by him is going to have a full, rich story and this one is no exception.

How could the performance have been better?

GET RID OF GUIDALL!! His voice reminds me of an old man with bad breath and body odor. I have listened to dozens of books read by him including the Gunslinger series and I find that his voice would be better suited to classics instead of thrillers. While I would go fishing with him I don't want to listen to him. His accent and the pitch and timbre of his voice subtract from the story. His characterizations are fine as long as the characters are 60+ years old but he doesn't do youth well

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

In a world.............

Any additional comments?

I love Vince Flynn. I have met people that remind me of the type of people he writes about so to me the characters are totally believable. The scenarios and situations he puts them in are exciting. Stretched reality yeah but it IS a story made to be entertaining, but hey who's to say things like this don't happen all the time. His stories are always technically accurate when it come to firearms. It cheeses me off to no end when an author who is supposed to do research shows complete ignorance and at times stupidity (King) when it comes to a characters most important gear in the thriller category. Flynn knows his stuff. BUT, as of this writing Guidall is still performing Flynn's books. Until he gets fired I'll be reading in print

Its been a long wait for the next Terry Pratchett and I wasnt disappointed. I loved it! The plot and sub plots are engaging, the characters are are well developed and the humor will make you laugh out loud. I listen while I'm working and there were a couple of close calls there when I got tickled. I'm a knifemaker, it could have been bad but the doctor says I ought to regain full use in a few weeks.
If you have read and loved any of Terrry's Discworld novels you'll love this one. If you've done the other two Tiffany Aching novels then you have no choice, you HAVE to have this one. Old friends return in the Wintersmith. Granny Weatherwax is as tough, wise and manipulative as ever. Ms. Tick is slightly over her head and Nanny Ogg is a disgusting old baggage. Tiffany is hard to sum up. A little sugar and spice but alot more steel than your normal 13 year old girl. What really made the story for me are the Feegles. Think of Braveheart only six inches high and slightly tipsy, OK strike the slightly.
The book may be aimed at adoles.. adulesc..kids but there wasnt anything at all childish about it. If I had to give this book a rating I'd give it a PG13 for some of the subject matter but there isnt anything racy about it.
The only question I have was why did they release a book that dealt with cold and ice and snow in january? I mean, jeez. It like 9 degrees F. out there. I could have done with it last august. Oh well thats ok I guess wearing 3 sweaters wasnt too much trouble. Thanks again Terry. Now get back to work, I want more

I really thought I was going to like this book the way it started out. The main character is put into a difficult situation but he has the skills and experience to win through. The bad guy is downright evil and the supporting characters are more than just extras. I really enjoyed the reader too. The story was going along beautifuly but then about 2/3 of the way through it ran off the road and burst into flames. It actualy made me angry. It was like the author got tired and just decided to end it. Take my advice and try something else like "Point of impact" by Stephen Hunter

This is a great story. Let me say that right off the bat. And if it was abridged they did a good job of it and there are no holes or gaps. If your a Marine you'll like it because it deals with a part of the history of the Marine Corps that most of us are a bit foggy on and hasnt been dealt with very much in books or movies. I liked the way that Macgregor inserted actual events (Dan Dalys actions during the Boxer rebellion)and real life characters (Smedley Butler who he names Buller)and weaves them around the main character. He did his homework on the technical side and I only found a couple of things that didnt fit, I think we had Lee straight pulls not Krags then and dont call me Sarge.
Like I said before this is a great story, however that being said the dramitization SUCKED. The fellow that played the main character, Levi was ok and the narrator was good but with very few exceptions the cast was awful. Way overacted and some of the accents were so fake as to be offensive If you can work around the awful voice acting and just pay attention to the story you'll like it.
