Historia
Professor Jeremiah Post, the poor handsome man, is in fact standing in the way of Alejandra “Alex” Torres turning Loretta’s, her grandmother’s bar, into a viable business. The hot brainiac who sleeps in one of the upstairs tenant rooms already has all of her Mexican American family’s admiration; she won’t let him have the bar and building she needs to resurrect her career, too.

Loved this story!
Revisado: 04-14-25
I'm new to romance novels but enjoyed that this still falls into the Chicano literature realm. Typically I read non-fiction and fantasy/SciSciFi but the ending satisfied my preference for the latter. I also didn't expeexpect it and was presently surprised.
I like the cussing and character flaws. I have been board with 1 & 2 dimensional characters. The main character is a firecracker and goes from 0 to 60, getting her in trouble. But she does rebuild bridges she burned, which helps make her more rounded instead of a total b. Her story was also intriguing as to why she acts the way she does. Her being a bartender makes sense. I liked the professor too, I enjoy brainy characters. I also relate to her grandma's story. Definitely believable issues from small town Mexican American families. Worth the read if your looking for an intresting story.

Her mandated support group counseling doesn’t help much. Yesica has always kept her feelings close, so even when an unlikely friendship blossoms with the group’s facilitator, she still has reasons for holding back. She’s just not ready to share.

Family Love Story on Healing
Revisado: 01-17-25
As a Chicana I can relate to this, family secrets, white lies to "spare feelings" that snowball, micro aggressive behavior from coworkers/in-laws, over compensation for imposter syndrome and trying to be a people pleaser due to cheating. My only wish was there were alternating chapters of Ana (mom and Yessica (daughter) but the grandmother's view point was left out of the chapter rotation and I feel it would have been better to hear directly from her in the chapter rotation. Her voice is heard and shared but I feel it would have added to the story to have a 3rd prospective on the other two characters. Definitely a great book.
It's a good story with a happy ending. I like Macias's other books too.

Revisado: 12-06-24
I listened with my 8 year old and we both couldn't stop. We sat through the entire book. We kept talking about the 2 old women and how they survived. My daughter said they were smart. The ending is good, there's a reconnection. My Inuit friend recommended this to me. My daughter is Ute and my family is also Navajo. There were minor parallels that we compared and contrasted, cultrally. This gave it an added layer of intrest. It not long but definitely worth it.

As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Get this book! Seriously!
I read this book in graduate school. I rushed through it back then and noted some great points. I saw this on Audible and noticed the author was narrating the book, so I downloaded it. She is a great storyteller AND her science is solid.
Her botany background opens up a whole new world of understanding. My favorite part is her explanation of the tree roots being connected by fungi. My mom's Tribe also talks about tree cousins and tree spirits. She circles back and explains her Tribe said they had Tree Counils.
It is really fascinating to listen to. Her story has meaning and intertwines with the science. One professor tells her that her answer isn't a botanist answer (paraphrasing) and he'll set her straight but she was interacting with plants and aware from a young age. My own son is like this with vehicles. Some people show immense talent from a young age and are destined to be in certcertain fields. Teachers and professors should encourage this.
I'm glad she is a botanist and I am thankful for this story.

Historia
As a Native American with parents of both Navajo and Cherokee descent, Stanley Milford Jr. grew up in a world where the supernatural was both expected and taboo, where shapeshifters roamed, witchcraft was a thing to be feared, and children were taught not to whistle at night. In his youth, Milford never went looking for the paranormal, but it always seemed to find him. When he joined the fabled Navajo Rangers—a law enforcement branch of the Navajo Nation who are equal parts police officers, archeological conservationists, and historians—the paranormal became part of his job.

Revisado: 11-07-24
I've lived and worked in many of these places. I also grew up on a neighboring reservation, so I'm very familiar with the New Mexico and Arizona places discussed. I've also heard about Mr. Milford over the years. I am glad he wrote a book about his experiences. I like how he has discussed his training and role within the Tribe as well.
Also, 1000 thanks for having the author read the story. I have listened to other books by Native authors but the narrator was non-Native. The pronunciation of places was totally butchered in those audio books. He was the perfect narrator for his work.
A little warning for those of us living on Rez; don't listen to this at night....lol...I freaked myself out when I noticed the sun was down. It was that good, I finished in 3 days! I did recommend this to all my friends. My mom was able to get her book copy autographed in Durango. It is great he is doing local book tours.

Good Content & I enjoyed the Australian AI Voice
Revisado: 10-20-24
This has a variety of practices & also discussed appropriation of practices not of your culture. The book talks about using practices as a compliment to professionals. I've done a lot of these over the years but did learn about a few others. I didn't know about crystals for example. It's not my culture but I did find it intresting. I also don't know a lot about astrology and find it intresting as well. I wish I read this in my 20s. I did enjoy the Australian AI voice. I use the Australian voice for my maps too. I find it soothing for some reason. It's quick to, lots of information in about 4 hours. It's to the point, I don't like a lot of fluff.

Fantastic read!
Revisado: 10-18-24
My family is from New Mexico and this book was vivid and detailed. Her story was incredible and I was happy to read this for Hispanic Heritage Month. My daughter is reading Bless Me Ultima for her NM History high school course, but I think this book is just as valuable. I wish it was on the lists for reading. I took Chicano studies in college and never heard of Elena before Audible recommend this based off of my reading history. I finished this in just a few days. Highly recommend, especially for those into Chicano or NM authors.

I really enjoyed this book. I was also a 1st generation Chicana student at a tier 1 university. I related to being, often the only POC or WOC in an entire class, to some of the traumas growing up and then navigating life after academia. I also grew up Catholic but I don't attend any church. It's helpful knowing others had similar experiences.
