best part of this book was Juniper. Otherwise the writing was repetitive and predictable. Disappointing for the most part.

Historia
In 1876, Sophia Duleep Singh was born into Indian royalty. Her father Maharajah Duleep Singh was heir to the Kingdom of the Sikhs, one of the greatest empires of the Indian subcontinent, a realm that stretched from the lush Kashmir Valley to the craggy foothills of the Khyber Pass and included the mighty cities of Lahore and Peshawar. It was a territory irresistible to the British, who plundered everything, including the fabled Koh-I-Noor diamond.

Thoughtful research
Revisado: 07-20-24
I learned so much from this book. Some of it I already knew, but holes in my knowledge were filled. It read like a novel. Sophia deserves to remembered for all the good and even the bad that she did. In the end, she was a strong, intelligent woman that made a difference in many lives.

Compelling
Revisado: 07-21-23
Overall I enjoyed the book. The narration was good. I know that many will hate the ending, but I believe that’s how the story needed to end. Not everything in life can be tied up in a neat bow. Life is messy and often unsatisfying. I like it when authors don’t bow to the idea that there needs to be a complete solution by the end of the book.

Too much whining
Revisado: 07-05-23
I have enjoyed this series overall. This book, however, has way too much “winging” by both Logan and Steel. I almost didn’t finish it I was getting so annoyed.

Worst of the series so far.
Revisado: 05-24-23
The narration was painful and annoying to listen to. The story got convoluted. Many of the American characters were written stereotypically and seemed cartoonish. I’m done with this series.

Historia
Wayétu Moore’s powerful debut novel, She Would Be King, reimagines the dramatic story of Liberia’s early years through three unforgettable characters who share an uncommon bond. Gbessa, exiled from the West African village of Lai, is starved, bitten by a viper, and left for dead, but still she survives. June Dey, raised on a plantation in Virginia, hides his unusual strength until a confrontation with the overseer forces him to flee. Norman Aragon, the child of a white British colonizer and a Maroon slave from Jamaica, can fade from sight when the earth calls him.

Great

I liked the story and it’s exploration of little known American and African history. I enjoyed the way that slavery was examined in many facets. The mystical connection of the African tribes was interesting as well.

When Jonathan Argyll is arrested for breaking into an obscure church in Rome, he claims that it contains a long-lost Raphael hidden under a painting by Mantini. The painting disappears - then reappears in the hands of the top British art dealer, Edward Byrnes. How has Byrnes found out about the hidden masterpiece, and whom is he acting for? There is also the curious matter of the safe deposit box full of sketches closely resembling features of the newly discovered painting.

Good premise, but…
Revisado: 03-02-23
I found the story hard to follow. It took too long to establish characters, which I had a difficult time keeping straight. I thought the plot got convoluted and characters were too naive for scholars.

A head strong woman
Revisado: 08-17-21
I very much enjoyed this novel. While some of it is obviously made up, Eliza made me laugh and I actually rooted for her the whole way. I appreciate the telling of the story of a strong woman in a time when strong women were not appreciated or encouraged. I learned some history I didn’t know and reinforced some that I did know. Highly recommend!
