Historia
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Got completely swept up!
Revisado: 09-08-24
I don’t usually do reviews, because why add to the hundreds that are already too many to plow through? But I’m adding this for all the non-romance readers out there who might otherwise overlook this gem.
I’m really not a romance girl. But I needed something fun and light, and this popped up (and was on sale) and seemed about right.
Oh my God. I can’t believe how much I enjoyed this! Sure, you absolutely know how it’s going to end, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying every step along the way, or from finding the ending immensely satisfying.
The dialogue is funny and clever, but doesn’t lose authenticity. The main characters are wounded enough that they crack your heart open but not so much that you’re drowning in their trauma. There’s a really nice assortment of oddball characters, and I totally want to move to this town. I was completely engaged the whole time. Really charming!

This whole series just got deeper and richer and more beautiful. Loved the flawed, complex characters, their individual struggles, and their journey together. Sorry it’s done!

Historia
Birdie Binkowitz is just a little bitter. As a young actress, she was the toast of Hollywood, definitely destined for greatness. Then the dragons had to rise up from their thousand-year slumber, take over Earth and ruin everything. Twenty years later, Birdie is living her worst life in her hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, working at her father's Seed and Feed (and Bagels). Then, a mysterious dragon appears in front of the store seeking her help. He’s got a bone to pick with his fellow dragons–and he wants to hit them where it hurts.

I am a huge fan of this author, but this one just didn’t come together for me. It’s hard to quantify what didn’t work, and I am clearly in the minority, but instead of the inspired offbeat lunacy I’ve enjoyed in his other books I just found this lame and kind of stupid. There are two hours left and I just can’t do it.

Historia
In the “compellingˮand “pitch perfectˮ follow-up to Tana French’s runaway best seller In the Woods, Cassie Maddox has transferred out of the Dublin Murder Squad - until an urgent telephone call brings her back to an eerie crime scene. The victim looks exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used as an undercover cop. Suddenly, Cassie is back undercover, to find out not only who killed this young woman, but, more importantly, who she was.

I DEVOUR Tana French’s books
Revisado: 05-15-23
I have to laugh at the reviews that find the premise far fetched. Unlike most mystery thrillers?! (Said good humoredly, not argumentatively)
I thought the author handled the sketchier angles well enough for it to be quite believable - the intense training that the main character did, how she handled discrepancies and inevitable slipups, etc. And the psychological and emotional depth makes it, for me, a million times more compelling than most formulaic mysteries that are so neatly (and far fetched-ly) solved. But that’s my jam.
I always wonder which reviewers to pay attention to, and right now I wish I could offer some benchmark that would help you know whether your tastes align with mine. All I can say is, I find her writing style hugely engaging and the depth of her character development breathtaking. I felt fully drawn into the main character’s experience, the kind of twisted, complex psychological journey that undercover work must often be. The mystery was almost secondary to me, but I found that satisfying too.
I try to save French’s books so I don’t finish all of them within a month, but when I can’t find something I’m in the mood for she never disappoints!

Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

I’m going to add to the side that proclaims this a work of art. This book takes you on a journey, breaks your heart, makes you see things you don’t want to see, and three weeks after listening to it I’m still feeling its impact.
Yes…if you like cozy mysteries where everything gets tied up in a neat bow and there are happy endings all around, you might want to look elsewhere. If you can appreciate being toyed with by a master, go for it!
And if you want to read the next one (“The Likeness”), don’t skip this. It’s not necessary to the plot but there are several references to this story and it helps you understand the main character more deeply.

Fantastic
Revisado: 01-29-23
I enjoyed this book so much, it made me regret my last dozen 5-star reviews because this one should be rated higher. Engaging story and characters, but what really took it over the top was the setting within the Native American community. A beautiful and insightful look into another world. I look forward to more from this author.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Slow at first but worth it
Revisado: 01-21-23
I usually enjoy a slow read that spends more time with character development than action, but this was a little slow even for me. But I enjoyed it enough to keep going, and when things picked up it became very satisfying. The last few chapters were quite touching, and the octopus antics were wonderful!

Lovely and quietly gripping
Revisado: 01-16-23
I loved this. It has this deceptively lyrical pace and tone, but it is like a gentle thriller in that you never know what is going to happen next. The author is a master of sly, insightful, hilarious observations that he just kind of slips in.
I laughed out loud a lot, which I’ve come to expect from Backman. And the ending (well, all the endings, I should say) touched my heart. Heartwarming but not sappy, which is hard to pull off. A real pleasure.

I really enjoy Harper’s stuff. Great literature it ain’t, but it’s fun and weird and entertaining, and has gotten me through many a insomniac stretch in the wee hours. I really like the characters and community in this series!

Generations of werewolves have been secretly residing in a secluded valley a stones throw from Grundy, Alaska. So when a snooping Outsider comes to Grundy to investigate rumors of lycanthropic shenanigans in the area, the valleys pack alpha, Maggie Graham, resolves to chase him away, even if doing so takes a quick bite on the butt. What a pity that researcher Nick Thatcher turns out to be so drool-worthy, and that his kisses make Maggie want to sit up and beg.
